escape key. No, not the little Esc key on the keyboard. One bigger
than that. A mind-rotting time waster that truly allows you to escape
for a bit. On my Red Hat desktop, freecell was the big escape key. Now
that I'm running Mandrake, I've found a new one. It's called
"Frozen-Bubble."

PalmOS reset primer
01/18/2004 05:56 AMHere's a HOW-TO describing the different flavors of reset available in
various PalmOS devices.
The reason it takes a while to get the general preference screen after
a soft reset is that the OS notifies every app on your device that a
soft reset has occurred. That allows each program to reinitialize.
There are two cases where you don't want that to happen. One is if you
want to delete a system file or other file that's normally open in the
OS and won't let you delete it as a result. Since that app won't be
initialized, it won't be active after the reset and you can freely
delete it. The second is if some app is crashing your system in an
endless chain of soft resets. This reset will keep all apps inactive
until you manually start them after the reset is complete. This way,
you can work your way through the apps and see which one is causing
the problem. It could be as simple as a corrupt preference database
for an app. This takes some patience in troubleshooting, but always
start with what you did last and work your way back through your last
changes in reverse order.

Picture Bubbles
Take a picture on the web, any picture will do as long as its
accessible by a URL,
and attach a comment to all or parts of the picture which is
displayed in a cartoon
bubble. The bubble can also be set to pop-up on mouseover or
mouseclick.
Wiki Toons
Start with a large picture or a series of related pictures placed
on a wiki page in
a row, a column, or a grid. Allow people to change or comment
on all or parts
of the pictures using tools on the web page. Put four in a
row and let people
create a toon by filling in the bubbles.
Stage Page
Fill top half of a page with a large image. That's the
stage. Fill the
bottom half with images of characters and props. Let people
play with the characters
and props and share the experience with other players and
spectators. Record
positions in time and let people replay one scene at a time.

Synchronizing PalmOS devices with Linux
03/19/2005 02:36 AMSmart handheld devices or personal digital assistants (PDA) extend our
access to the information on our desktops, from addresses to telephone
numbers. Unfortunately, when it comes to vendor support for
synchronizing this information with a *nix operating system, the
options are limited. In this article, we'll review the various
GPL-based suites available for synchronizing PalmOS-based devices with
Linux.

01/08/2004 08:09 PMAn interesting theory that facial expressions affect blood-flow to
the brain and are not just results of emotions. The assertion is that
these blood-flows affect our emotions. So SMILE! :-)
Zajonc, R. B., Emotion and Facial Efference: A Theory
Reclaimed, Scince, 1985, 288, 15-2
He also asserted that elation follows the smile, not the opposite.
The blood flow changes caused by contracting the facial muscles in the
smile alter cerebral blood flow and cause an emotional change. He
extends this reasoning to account for all kinds of other bizarre
facial habits associated with emotions -- wrinkled forheads, rubbing
one's eyes, hand on forehead, pulling earlobes, licking lips,
etc.

Putting A Smiling Face On The Database
That Knows Everything About You
Putting A Smiling Face On The Database
That Knows Everything About You
05/03/2004 06:03 PMThere are ways to argue that better management of information about
someone can lead to better privacy protection. However, I've read and
reread this article about how the CEO of ChoicePoint, a massive
database company best known for providing background checks on anyone,
is trying to openly discuss privacy
concerns with people, and about the only thing I can get out of it
is that he wants to convince us all that we should just trust him. He
wants a debate, but doesn't do much to explain how a service like his
actually protects our privacy. His only point is that the data should
remain in separate databases - until someone does a search. Of
course, this seems like semantics. If the search goes across multiple
databases, then it's effectively a single database. He's also working
to provide the backend of Stephen Brill's
"No,
I'm Not A Terrorist Card" that we discussed last year. The idea
is that non-terrorists (who, as the saying goes, "have nothing to
hide") reveal all sorts of info about themselves in exchange for a
card that says, basically, "the person holding this card isn't a
terrorist, don't bother making them stand in long security lines." As
we pointed out, as voluntary as this sounds, it certainly seems like
there would be an awful lot of guilt-by-no-association. "What, you
mean, you didn't pass the 'I'm not a terrorist' test? What did you
do?" But, thankfully, if we just trust this CEO (without
understanding why we should trust him - and even though the article
names some screwups the company has made in the past concerning
privacy) we should have nothing to worry about.

[Thank G*d it's Friday!] UK Home Office
bans smiling
08/06/2004 07:56 AMHeres a nice filler for a friday, made me chuckle anyway. Our fine
friends over at The Inquirer have spotted an interesting piece of
news that could threaten the reputation of Brits abroad everywhere
(myself included).
THE HOME OFFICE has ordered British people to stop smiling on their
passport photograph in a bid to save the country from a terror
attack.
It seems that the British stiff upper-lip is required so that photos
can be scanned by digital readers. The reader will compare the photo
with the person standing in front of it.
According to guidelines issued for all those who want a passport their
photos must be "looking straight at the camera, with a neutral
expression, with their mouth closed".
Apparently a cheesy grin will chuck the scanner, which has an allergy
to teeth, completely out of wack. Photo booth companies have been
forced to update all their machines to ensure that the pictures are
acceptable under the new rules. The Home Office said its requirements
were in line with new international standards for biometric
face-recognition schemes.

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AMCory Doctorow:
The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the
Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in
game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all
seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it
will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These
people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with
players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live
"actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially
commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty
slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other
than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an
Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game
so far.
