SRW - Search/Retrieve Web Service

SRW - Search/Retrieve Web Service 09/11/2004 07:06 AM
SRW - Search/Retrieve Web Service
http://www.loc.gov/z3 950/agency/zing/srw/

SRW defines a web service for searching databases containing metadata and objects, both text and non-text. The SRW Initiative builds on Z39.50 along with web technologies. Building on Z39.50 semantics enables the creation of gateways to existing Z39.50 systems; web technologies reduce the barriers to new information providers allowing them to make their resources available via a standard search and retrieve service. SRU, Search and Retrieve URL Service, is a companion service to SRW, whose primary difference is its access mechanism. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

http://www.ar iadne.ac.uk/area-dna-155ue40/morgan/

Eric Lease Morgan describes sibling Web Service protocols designed to define a standard form for Internet search queries as well as the structure of the responses. This article is an introduction to the "brother and sister" Web Service protocols named Search/Retrieve Web Service (SRW) and Search/Retrieve URL Service (SRU) with an emphasis on the later. More specifically, the article outlines the problems SRW/U are intended to solve, the similarities and differences between SRW and SRU, the complimentary nature of the protocols with OAI-PMH, and how SRU is being employed in a sponsored NSF (National Science Foundation) grant called OCKHAM to facilitate an alerting service. The article is seasoned with a bit of XML and Perl code to illustrate the points. The canonical home page describing SRW/U [1] is also a useful starting point.

Just let it go: man traps self trying to
retrieve cellphone from train toilet
10/31/2003 12:46 PM
Sometimes you just have to let go. Yesterday some genius riding the Metro-North commuter line here in New York accidentally dropped his cellphone into one of the train's toilets and then proceeded to get himself trapped as he stuck in his arm to try and retrieve it. It took several rescue crews and the jaws of life to extricate him, in the process disrupting train service for thousands of commuters since other trains had to be rerouted. And to top it off, the phone was never found. All we have to say is that it better have been a really expensive phone to justify sticking your arm into a public toilet. Read...

Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor?

Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor? 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
AP: Amazon.com invades Google's turf with Silicon Valley startup.Seattle-based Amazon has dubbed its search startup "A9" and set up offices in Palo Alto, not far from Google's Mountain View headquarters. A9 hopes to launch in October with 30 employees and grow much larger as it develops a search engine that will be licensed to other Web sites, said spokeswoman Alison Diboll. [...] Unlike Google, A9 isn't trying to develop an all-purpose search engine that indexes billions of Web pages. Instead, the startup is focusing on a search engine sweet spot -- e-commerce.The article is very vague so it's hard to get a handle one exactly what A9 is, but it does sound a lot like Froogle, Google's shopping search engine. Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads

Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads
07/06/2004 05:28 AM
The whole Google selling trademarked ads issue is getting ridiculous. Now a bunch of lawyers are arguing over it, after one lawyer bought Google ads on the name of a competitor. The competitor in question sent a nastygram to the lawyer saying he was trying to "sponge" off his reputation. Except... that's not true. As the accused lawyer in question points out, he just put his name where potential customers might be looking for it. As we've pointed out before this is no different than a new soda company wanting to be placed on the shelf next to Coca-Cola. They know people will go looking for Coke, and they want to make sure their bottles on there as well. The purpose of trademark law is to protect someone from being lied to when one company claims they're something they aren't. However, to just make sure your advertisements appear where people are looking for your competitors is simply good business. The reporter then goes out and digs up a bunch of quotes from other lawyers suggesting that the ad-buying lawyer is an underhanded bastard who is somehow "cheating." It's pretty clear from the quotes that most of the quoted lawyers don't understand the actual issue at hand, but that doesn't seem to stop the reporter from quoting them all, without quoting a single source (other than the accused lawyer) with the opposing viewpoint.

Digital Junkyard: A Competitor To The

Digital Junkyard: A Competitor To The
Internet Archive?
12/09/2003 03:50 AM
Brewster Kahle's Internet Archive project is really a great thing, but should there be only one such archive? It looks like they may be getting some competition in the form of the digital junkyard being built at the University of Waterloo. They claim it's the "world's largest" archive of digital content - but I wonder if they're really larger than the Internet Archive which is quite large and growing every day by leaps and bounds. It's going to contain all sorts of odd content, though, including "everything from movie outtakes to the sound bites left on the editing floor during the shooting of a music video." They say they plan to make it available to anyone who wants access, but don't say how they plan to do so. Right now, however, it's not easy to find at all, and after a quick search, I've given up until someone with more time/knowledge of this project points it out.

Chinese Competitor To Microsoft Office
Ready

Chinese Competitor To Microsoft Office
Ready
05/18/2004 02:52 AM
It was just a few years ago that the conventional wisdom was that Microsoft had won the OS war, won the browser war and (most convincingly of all) won the office productivity suite war. It looks like they're facing increasing competition on all of those fronts - but the most surprising may be the office productivity suite arena. Star Office/Open Office has gotten plenty of attention, but recently we saw IBM launch their own hosted suite but the biggest opportunities may be outside the US. Already, there are stories about China, Japan and Korea working on alternative operating systems and applications to get out from under the Microsoft thumb, and now Evermore is launching the latest version of their EI Office suite which is specifically targeted at the Chinese market. They offer versions of the software in Simplified Chinese, American English and Japanese. The one area where they might be causing themselves trouble is with the price. They offer two options: rentals at $99/year or $249 for 3 years - which isn't all that different from Microsoft's own pricing. If they really want to cause trouble, they should under price Microsoft.
