New 'Instant Ethernet' Powerline Device
Unveiled
03/20/2003 01:05 PM

Phonex Broadband announced a new "powerline" device that, for the first time, does not require special software drivers for installation. Powerline connections employ the unused bandwidth in standard electrical wires, allowing powerlines to pull "double duty" as both power sources and network ports.

Trials

Broadband over Powerline Moves into Real
Trials
06/14/2004 10:14 AM
Bits over juice starts to take off in trials, though its future is still uncertain: A Washington state public utility is working with a private Internet provide in an inexpensive 60-day trial to see how well BPL actually works, and whether customers will find it interesting. Nationwide, a few dozen trials have about 2,000 actual customers. The future of the technology depends on the real cost and the real speed when it's deployed in the field. Unlike unloaded copper wire, which has known properties, the numbers of systems and the distances involved in BPL add variables that need performance testing. Broadband has to avoid truck rolls to houses to keep costs affordable....

corinex_av.jpgCorinex is hoping there are still a few networking situations out there where wireless won't do, but you can be arsed to run Ethernet. Its AV Powerline Ethernet Adapter uses your powerlines as the cable, based on the new HomePNA 2.0 specification that can supposedly hit 200Mbit/sec transfer rates. That's all well and good, except that Trusted Reviews found real-world rates of around 20Mbit/sec, which is about you can expect to get from 802.11g on a bad day, and doesn't hold a candle to proper Ethernet. At around $130 per unit (and you'll need to buy one for each power socket you intend to turn into an Ethernet port) it doesn't sound like much of a value.

CES Unveiled

CES Unveiled 01/06/2005 09:52 PM

straton_boarder.jpg imageNight before last was the annual CES Unveiled, a press-only party where journalists got a preview of the best of the upcoming products featured in the show as well as the winners of the Innovations 2005. The room was a bit small, but there were plenty of interesting finds, if you could squeeze past the huge crowd.

AMD was showing off the latest laptops powered by their AMD Mobile Athlon 64 Processor. They had a Sharp Actius AL27 running the AMD 64 2700+, 15" XGA screen, built-in 802.11g, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB HD, Dual Format DVDRW, 10/100 LAN, 56k Modem, PCMCIA Type II slot, USB 2.0 ports and Firewire, all in a small laptop that weighs just 6.5lbs. It looked a lot like an Apple iBook, which is probably why the booth babes liked it the best out of the bunch.
