06/20/2004 05:17 AMGoogle
introduces Adsense banner ads.
Google has recently introduced banner ads for their
adsense program, so perhaps all the talk about how text ads perform
better is not true.
You could argue that banner ads are a different thing, that they
are richer media and thus brand advertising. But the difference is
that Google's image ads do not pay publishers on an impressions basis,
but for clicks, just like current contextual text ads.
Adwords works. People click on text ads which are relevant to a
search because they are actively looking for something. But perhaps
when ads are served alongside static content, the conversion rate is
lower, and perhaps people are starting to ignore them now that the
novelty has worn off. So maybe in your face image ads are back, for
good reason.
The problem for Google is that image ads are not only 'in your
face', they are very much in the face of a website. With the renewed
confidence that content publishers now have, my guess is that CPM
impressions based advertising will be back. If publishers have
leverage they will want the guaranteed revenue that being paid for
traffic gives them.
Google got rid of all CPM advertising making a big bet on the best
of both worlds CPC model that sits in between an advertiser and
publishers needs. If CPM is back is that bad news for Google?

Is Google News Evil?
02/25/2003 10:14 AMIs Google News Evil?
I hadn't realized how volatile Google News was until just this
morning. I clicked onto it and opened an article in a new browser
window. My normal excessively windowed reading habit, I'll admit.
Then I happened to refresh the original Google News window and *Poof*
after just a minute or two. Gone. Now don't get me wrong, I
completely understand why it works like that but it did make me aware
to the degree that Google News is starting to shape my thinking just
by granting me access to a wider range of content than previously.
Here's content that it just filtered out of my view in real time.
Overall I do think Google News is good but this example really showed
me how it could be applied in an evil fashion. How do we know that
the presentation algorithms won't get perverted?
Of course this is the question that has always existed with any type
of news gathering organization -- they all bring bias to the table.

09/18/2004 05:21 PMWe here at MacMerc.com have a love/hate relationship with banner
advertisements. On the one hand they are annoying--especially those
"Click the monkey and win a prize" ones. But on the other hand, they
help us pay our hosting fees.
Quite a while ago, as a public service to our readers, we posted
an
article on ad blocking and now that sufficient time has passed and
our Google AdSense revenues are dwindling, we thought it might be the
appropriate time to see if some method of ad blocking as become a
standard part of your internet experience.

HP Decides On Anti-Consumer Strategy
HP Decides On Anti-Consumer Strategy
01/09/2004 09:50 PMWhile most of the focus on HP today comes from the
HPod/
iPod announcement, there were a few other interesting stories.
I've been hearing from folks at CES that Carly Fiorina's keynote was a
doozy, in that it lined up supporters from the music industry who
spent all their time bashing kids downloading music. Reports are now
coming out talking about
HP's
anti-consumer rights stance on these things. Once again, all of
these features
do not make things better for consumers - they
just make things worse. At the same time, it will do nothing to slow
down real piracy - as those folks will just get around the copy
protection. So, what we're left with is an offering that is less
friendly to consumers, more costly to HP (and, therefore, consumers),
and does nothing to help anyone. The other "word from the floor" we
heard at CES is that HP employees in the same room as the keynote even
agreed that this policy was bad news, and were upset that their
employer had decided to go with such an anti-consumer stance.
Meanwhile, Tristan Lewis writes in to point out that the bigger news,
buried in HP's announcements today is
a
bout their Lightscribe offering, which will let DVD and CD burners
silkscreen images directly onto the CD. While I'm not sure I agree
with Tristan's assessment that this is a bigger story than the iPod
deal, it is a cool idea.
Update: As pointed out in the
comments, Tristan's description goes a bit further than the actual
product: it doesn't actually do silkscreening, but creates "silkscreen
quality labels".
