United Way will provide cheap WiFi and
PCs to Philly's poor
03/20/2003 01:01 PMThe United Way has launched a project to cover Philadelphia's poor
neighborhoods with wireless access and to supply low-income families
with computers.
The project, to be completed in April, will create two Internet "hot
spots" in West Philadelphia that will allow anyone with the right
equipment to tap in to a broadband connection as powerful as any
offered by a commercial service.
The service will cost between $5 and $10 per month, less than what
many people pay to dial up the Internet on a modem.
Only people with a computer and a wireless Internet adapter card will
be able to get the signals, but the United Way plans to start giving
away machines to area families this summer, starting with 100 in the
city's West Powelton and Haddington sections.
"The long-term plan is to have a wireless coverage blanket in
neighborhoods where people probably couldn't afford the service on
their own," said Stephen Rockwell, director of technology outreach for
the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

FCC allows mix-and-match antennae
FCC allows mix-and-match antennae
07/23/2004 12:48 PMThe FCC has a new and somewhat baroque regulation that legalizes
plugging aftermarket antennae into your WiFi access-points. In a long
post on WiFiNetNews, Glenn Fleishman takes apart the new regulation
and explains in admirably.
The FCC rule doesn’t suddenly make all antennas legal for all
systems. Instead, they have chosen a clever middle ground. For new
devices—or, presumably for recertification of old
devices—manufacturers will be allowed to test the system with
high-gain antennas of each major type, like omni, patch, yagi, and so
forth. Once the device is certified, the manufacturer can release the
characteristics of the antennas they tested for both their in-band and
out-of-band signal patterns and strengths. (Out-of-band transmissions
are the inevitable but not intentional frequencies that are broadcast
on at typically very low levels due to harmonics and other technical
radio issues.)

07/16/2004 04:50 PMA few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's
WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

Business Week about a way to solve the spam problem. Kenton has been
pointing out all the same things lots of people have been pointing out
about why all of the various spam laws won't work - and he's been
getting slammed by angry emailers for it. One assumed that he is
against these laws because he has a personal assistant who screens his
spam for him - which is when he had his brainstorm: to help solve both
the spam problem and the job situation,
everyone should hire "personal email assistants" who can
manually scan their email for them. He points out that not only does
this solve the basic problem, but it has a nice balancing effect.
Part of the reason there's so much spam is that the economy hasn't
been great, and companies are forced to market more aggressively -
such as by spam. However, if we put everyone back to work by making
them email scanners, then the need for such aggressive marketing
decreases - and the system balances out. Not only that, but now we
all know the best way to help find yourself a personal email
assistant: just send some spam. After all, under the new US anti-spam
law, it's perfectly legal.

HOWTO build a Bluetooth "sniper rifle"
03/14/2005 05:29 PMCory Doctorow:
One of the security assumptions in Bluetooth is that attackers need to
be quite close-by if they want to gain access to your phone or other
device. Here's simple instructions for building a handsome, effective
Bluetooth "sniper rifle" whose high-gain antenna will give you access
to devices from miles away.
After a few seconds, John pointed the gun at the Library Tower / US
Bank Building, which is the tallest building in Los Angeles. The
building was .75 miles (a little over 1 km) from our position.
As more Bluetooth devices started appearing, John said, "This building
is full of Bluetooth! Look we got some Blackberries!" He also
explained that, with multiple guns, it would be possible to track a
single Bluetooth device as the person walked around. In less than a
few minutes, twenty devices were detected—all at distances over a
half mile away! We decided to quickly conclude the scan, given police
activity in the area earlier in the day from a bomb scare.

WiFi in the UK
WiFi in the UK
08/09/2004 08:02 AMAccording to today's
Independent (a UK broadsheet) and Intel, only a
1/3 of people living in the United Kingdom know what WiFi is. WiFi,
which stands for Wireless Fidelity, allows mobile users to connect
their laptops to the internet and other devices without having to use
standard hardwire networks.
The survey, conducted recently, found that many people thought that
the phrase WiFi was cockney rhyming slang (e.g. Dog and Bone : Phone)
for "Wifey". Other people who participated in the survey
answered that they thought Wifi was a Japanese island, or an exotic
fruit.
Asides from showing a shocking level of IT ignorance in the UK, the
results do highlight Intel's attempts to get Britain wirelessly
connected. Combined with a motivation for shifting Centrino packages,
Intel is really hoping to raise awareness and get people using the
wireless hot spots they've been setting up with BT over the last year.
Intel and the Wireless industry would love to see the UK brought up to
the same level of wireless proliferation as in the USA.

directed at individual users. Second, and much more importantly, this
only works on the very, very few flights on which Boeing is offering
their Connexion service -- which right now is basically a couple of
