OpenOffice for Mac OS X Goes Alpha 03/20/2003 01:05 PM

OpenOffice.org has announced an alpha release of the Mac OS X version of its open source office suite. While the software is not a final release, according to OpenOffice.org, the organization presented it as an important milestone in the effort to create free office productivity software that runs on all major platforms.

Why OpenOffice?

Why OpenOffice? 12/17/2004 06:37 PM
From one Jem Berkes, of whom I’ve never previously heard, a nice, compact tour through all the reasons you might want to base your work on the OpenOffice.org software rather than the alternative. There’s nothing groundbreaking or surprising, just some obvious points that need to be made and here are made well.

OpenOffice

OpenOffice 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
I spent the day Thursday at StarOffice in Hamburg and came away with some of my ideas about XML & blogging changed. It was a side-trip; other business took me to Brussels and OpenOffice wasn’t that far away and I had an agenda there, which we’ll get to. But this is important stuff, I think. [Updated with a pointer.] [And again with Geof Glass’ OO.o-to-blog gateway.]...

Using OpenOffice

Using OpenOffice 04/18/2004 09:51 AM

It's possible to ditch Microsoft Office: I actually used OpenOffice (used as opposed to played with, which I've done a number of times) the other day to write a document. It was fantastic. In many respects, better than Word.

I'll admit that a lot of my desire to use Linux and other software alternatives is just to be counter-culture. Not so in this case. OpenOffice is not only a legitimate alternative to the old guard that is Microsoft Office, it may be better. Look for a day where people struggle to justify why they're using Microsoft Office and not the alternative.

Is today's OpenOffice good enough for the enterprise? For most jobs — word processing, presentations or spreadsheets — the answer is yes. Compatibility with Microsoft Office isn't a problem unless sophisticated macros are involved. Interoperability, the greatest hurdle to conquer on the way to adoption, is almost a nonissue. OpenOffice even offers features missing in Microsoft Office, like PDF or Flash data exports.

My goodness, there are oceans of w ords being pumped around about some subclauses in the Sun-Microsoft agreement. I love Slashdot’s editorial judgment but despise the idiotic discussion threads, so suffice it to say that the usual people said the usual things there about Sun and Microsoft and litigation; but then check out Danese Cooper’s take. Anyhow, I think it’s sensible to be concerned about the potential threat. Of course, that concern would vanish if Microsoft were to state that they won’t use intellectual-property litigation as a competitive weapon against other office-software packages. Simple enough. How about it?

OpenOffice.org v1.1.2 released

OpenOffice.org v1.1.2 released 06/19/2004 01:10 AM
“OpenOffice.org is both an Open Source product and a project. The product is a multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. Sophisticated and flexible, OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.”

The Case for OpenOffice

The Case for OpenOffice 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
What is free, easy to learn and manage, and compatible with other file formats and every major platform? (Hint: It also represents one less tie to Microsoft.) The answer is OpenOffice.org, according to the creators, managers and evangelists of this open source office productivity suite.

UPDATED The OpenOffice folks are giving the world peek-plus at version 2.0, which looks pretty snazzy. Of course, the Mac OS X version is still basically missing in action. Macworld review: Font Doctor 6

Macworld review: Font Doctor 6 05/28/2004 05:04 PM
Font Doctor is a utility you don't ever want to have to use. But when your fonts act funky or when they're in disarray, then Font Doctor 6 becomes your best friend. It not only repairs corrupt fonts and organizes them into neat folders, but also converts Windows fonts into Mac fonts, and vice versa. Now with a faster and simpler interface, Font Doctor, which has been updated for Panther, is a great complement to full-featured font-activation programs such as Suitcase, which includes Font Doctor. The $20 upgrade price certainly makes upgrading worthwhile for current users.

Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell

Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell
Laptop with built-in keylogger color="red">(Update: HOAX)
06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:

Reader comment: Marc Hedlund presents the best argument for this thing being a hoax: "A search for the name of the FOIA officer in the letter turns up this letter, which uses the same logo and the same address as the one in the 'keylogger' story. Note also that the 'file number' is the *same* on the two letters. It looks to me like the keylogger poster just overlaid new text in the body of the letter." Link

I'm not sure what to make of this, really. This website has a report by an anonymous person who says he bought a new Dell laptop and discovered what he claims is a "keyboard logger" -- a chip that stores keystrokes. He says he called Dell's tech support and asked them about it:

"they said, and I quote, 'The intregrated service tag identifier is there for assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal information.' He then hung up."
He then call the police, who told him to call the Department of Homeland Security:
"they told me to submit a Freedom of Information Act request. This is what I got:" (Click on thumbnails for enlargement)
 Wtf Lol Files Homelandletter
Is this a hoax? The page seems to be the only accessible page on the site (www.chromance.de), which has a German top level domain. Link (Thanks, Rev!)

Update: Phil Torrone says: "I did an investi-MAKE-ion. I think the keylogger thing is a hoax. the images from the site are from here. The memo/letter thing of course looks fakey too.

"I think this is far scarier." (This points to an article that says the U.S. Department of Justice is looking into making ISPs store "records of e-mail, browsing or chat-room activity months after ISPs ordinarily would have deleted the logs -- if they were ever kept in the first place.")

Reader comment: Tian says: "The letter accompanied with the story about Dell laptop's keylogger is fake as well. If you do a search for dept. of homeland security's logo, it is a blue colour circular logo with an eagle in it. The one on the fake letter is a five-pointed star, which is commonly used for Sheriff's office." Link
