Whether you're commuting to work or headingacross country, nothing beats music for passing the time. Until a few years ago, audio CDs were the only way to get digital sound in your car. But now, thanks to portable audio players, satellite radios, and MP3-compatible CD gear, it's easier than ever to listen to clean, digital music on the road (see "MP3s for the Road” for tips on burning MP3 discs). For a fee, satellite radio receivers let you tap into 24-7 digital programming. If you'd rather listen to your own tunes and playlists -- and many more songs than a CD can hold -- an iPod is the way to go. Mobile installations range from basic dashboard mounts to stealthy setups that conceal the iPod and let you control it remotely. There's a system for just about any car.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.31_001 (For Linux
2.4 branch)
06/05/2005 11:23 PM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

(Linux 2.4 branch)

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security "hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not see what others are doing.

This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.
