Researchers Chill Chips with Water

Researchers Chill Chips with Water 03/20/2003 01:05 PM

By spraying a fine mist of water directly on the top of silicon semiconductors, researchers at UCLA say they are boosting performance while keeping chips cool. The thermal management technique may have applications in everything from high-performance microprocessors to communications platforms in unmanned aircraft and electric car engines.

Moore Needs to Chill

Moore Needs to Chill 06/22/2004 12:39 PM

  • Jack Shafer (Slate): Libel Suit 9/11: Michael Moore's hysterical, empty threats. Of course, multimillionaire Moore can always punish his critics financially by filing silly lawsuits that require them to spend huge sums to be dismissed as frivolous. But Moore is not likely to want that sort of publicity and heartache—it's as much a drag to sue as it is to be sued. And a man with his sort of assets isn't likely to tempt a countersuit by the defendant when the case is tossed out. Moore isn't likely to find a more severe appraisal of his film and his work than this Slate piece by Christopher Hitchens. Read it, Mr. Moore. We invite your suit.

    Chill, Toronto 08/17/2004 07:26 PM
Cool! Toronto's Deep Lake Water Cooling System was launched today. The system cuts electricity consumption in commercial buildings by 75 per cent by drawing near-freezing water through pipes extending five kilometres out into Lake Ontario. According to the city, the system will save enough power to service more than 100 Toronto office towers or 4,200 homes per year, and it will eliminate 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Here's a public television segment explaining the process. Seems like it makes a nice complement to the lakeshore wi ndmill.

chillpak.jpg imageNot content to rest on his laurels as "that one guy on the X-Files and then that spin-off that tanked," actor Dean Haglund used his natural ability to place things under other things (a skill developed through years spent on casting couches) to develop the 'Chill Pak,' a cooling pad filled with reusable gel that is designed to lower the amount of heat dumped from sperm-boiling laptops. The $20 sack of sack protection is even made of a special material that prevents condensation, keeping any bags jammed below your laptop sweat free.
