Most of the time, the life of a wayward freelance geek journalist is fraught with stress, challenges, unpaid invoices. Well, last night wasn't one of those times. I went to the Playboy Mansion to interview Hugh Hefner, and cover the launch of a new Playboy-themed electronic game for Wired News and National Public Radio. In the game, you get to be Hef, doing hefsterly things like -- oh, nailing 18 year old hotties, and managing a booming porn publication empire.

I sat down with Mr. Hefner and his gorgeous companions, and asked him if he felt the game designers had created an accurate virtual depiction of the world in which he lives. "It's pretty good, other than the fact that they gave me this giant Jay Leno chin," he said. There was much butt cleavage in effect. Beautiful women with tromp l'oeil lingerie painted on their perfectly engineered breasts served little snacks off flawlessly polished silver platters (see image at left). Oh, and in case you're wondering -- there is no WiFi inside the grotto, although there is one very heavily used mattress. NPR and Wired News stories coming up.

AP - Playboy is taking a chance on silicon instead of silicone. The October issue of the men's magazine features several video game characters posing in the nude — images created by the game companies through detailed computer illustration.

So the Playboy the game is out and ready to go. I have to admit, it looks like a slightly more adult version of the Sims to me personally. The game’s makers claim that it is about business, but I can not help wondering what kind they might be referring to. Besides that, if it is like anything from real life, you can rest assure that the Geeks are not included. :o/

Ship Yer Code!.

Marc's Voice: "Ross is shipping like the exact same week as we are."

Maybe, maybe not! ;) Of course,  May 10 through May 14 *is* First Annual Ship Yer Code! Week. The festivities kick off with a pancake breakfast at the Creative Commons first thing Monday morning. Stay tuned for more infromation about the rockin' schedule we have lined up!!

Note: Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis at a Tower Records near you. Wristband policy in effect, attendee's *must* be shipping code next week!!

ObDisclaimer: Of course, I'm not publicly confirming nor denying that Tucows is shipping anything next week. You'll have to wait for the press release that's allegedly coming out in order to get the real scoop on the rumors that Marc is spreading about Blogware.

Sony Style PSP Launch Party

Sony Style PSP Launch Party 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

psp_party.jpgSo sure, Sony is throwing a launch party for the PSP at the Sony Style store in Manhattan tomorrow night, but the real news is: you might just get to meet Carson Daly. (I know!?!?) Actually, Danger Mouse is supposed to be developing, packaging, and delivering sonic science at the party, too, which is pretty cool (I've yet to buy into the DM hype, but sometimes a live performance is all it takes).

Oh, and if you're among the first 500 to arrive, you'll be able to purchase a PSP and a game at midnight. It's worth a shot (and I'll be there, which is almost as good as Carson Daly, right?) Cool Hunting has the flyer and details.

PSP Launch Party in NYC [CoolHunting]

Update: Brian writes,"You mentioned the launch party in Manhattan, but not the one in San Francisco. It's at Sony Metreon, 101 4th Street in the Playstation store (not Sony Style) at 12:00 AM March 24, or tomorrow night. :) Price/opportunities for customers are the same, I'd imagine."

Hot party game trend: Cockroach racing

Hot party game trend: Cockroach racing 06/14/2004 11:40 AM
A Lithuanuan event management company offers unusual party games, including the time-honored sport of Madagascar Cockroach Racing.
Every participant receives special race money and can purchase with them one of six cockroach. Other participants bet for the couple of player and cockroach they liked the most and watch the competition on the big table (4.5x1.5 m).

The game will be a surprise to all guests. As much as they would load the poor insect from the beginning, they will love them be the end of the race. Players stimulate theirs cockroaches to run by knocking the glassed surface of the course with the special small sticks and joy of every step of cockroach. The finish of the race is quite unpredictable and every step of a cockroach brings lots of emotions to all the guests.

Google Throws A Party For Those Who Game
The System
11/06/2003 08:31 PM
More and more people are saying that "Google is broken," as the search results are increasingly less relevant. Much of the problem is that some people see to have figured out how to successfully game the system. For quite a while Google could stay ahead of those folks, but in some areas it looks like they've fallen behind. On the whole, I still find Google quite useful, but it's not as automatic as it once was. For the folks who trick Google (they prefer to call themselves "search engine optimizers") there's a once-a-month or so day they dread when Google updates its algorithm and the results go through a "Google Dance" as the listing move around. If Google does a good job (which the SEO folks pray against), then improperly displayed SEO client websites slide down the Google list. If not, they stay up at the top. So, how does Google deal with these folks? They throw them a party, amusingly called (you guessed it) the "Google Dance." Google says that they're targeting the ethical search engine optimizers, who they want to target with good suggestions that helps both sides, but since it's tough to tell the good from the bad, anyone is welcome. Some slightly more cynical folks think that Google is just trying to butter them up and figure out what their secrets are to improve their algorithm. Both might be right.

SciFi Channel launch party for
Battlestar Galactica miniseries,
Hollywood
12/03/2003 02:56 AM

At the DGA in Hollywood tonight, SciFi Channel premiered the forthcoming "reimagined" miniseries Battlestar Galactica, which debuts Monday night, next week.

Cast and crew were present, along with SciFi Network brass. The event included a screening of episode one in entirety. Forget what you've heard about complaints from fans of the original series -- the new version is nothing short of breathtaking, and lives up to its producers' promise to turn the science fiction TV genre on its head. The two-part miniseries was co-produced by David Eick and Ron Moore (who also cowrote the screenplay), and masterfully, sensitively directed by Michael Rymer -- who is destined to become "untouchable in five minutes," according to a pre-screening quip from Eick. He's right. This stuff is the real thing.

More in Wired News shortly... but for now, here are a few snapshots I took of the cast members who were present this evening. From left to right: Edward James Olmos (Commander Adama), Tricia Helfer (Cylon Number 6), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck), and Grace Park (Boomer).
