09/15/2004 11:30 PMJust for kicks, I used the camera on my Morotola V710 to take a shot
looking down the hall on the way out of work today. I then e-mailed it
to myself (typing e-mail addresses on a cell phone sucks, btw). As you
can see, the image quality isn't great (click it to see the whole
thing). But I didn't exactly buy it for the image quality. The upload
was surprisingly quick. This mobile stuff is all high-tech these
days....

USOC Wants Help to Catch Drug Cheaters
(AP)
04/26/2004 08:08 PMAP - Worried they're running out of time to keep drug cheaters out of
the Athens Games, U.S. Olympic officials want some help from federal
authorities. And they aren't just going after athletes who have failed
drug tests. Instead, they hope to use a clause in the U.S. Anti-Doping
Agency's rules to bar athletes who acknowledge the use of steroids and
other banned substances, including in grand jury testimony.

Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters
Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters
06/18/2004 12:59 PMThe FCC has made it clear that they
don't
want people jamming mobile phone signals in the US (though,
the
government is exempt from those rules). The FCC argues that
jamming mobile phone signals is theft of airwaves -- but, more
importantly, the dangers of someone missing an important call outweigh
any benefit of silence. Still, many other countries don't see it that
way, and mobile phone jamming systems are increasingly common in
places like theaters (and, even
hotels).
Now, a school in Italy has decided that mobile phone based cheating
is such a big problem that they're
installing phone jammers to stamp out the
possibility. Seems like a mighty big stick to pull out to stop
some cheating kids. Honestly, I'm still a big confused how most
students cheat with mobile phones. While phones are clearly getting
smaller and smaller, and kids are quite good at punching in text
messages without looking, they're still fairly large objects compared
to traditional cheat sheets.

Chinese Cheaters Charged With Stealing
State Secrets
06/15/2004 01:05 PMOver in China a group of students
are being charged with theft of state secrets for stealing
exam questions for the national college entrance exam. The scam
sounds like a bad movie plot, and it's surprising that they got as far
as they did with it. A few students went in to take the exam, and
then left with the questions (it's unclear how they left and how they
took the questions with them). They gave the questions to other
students sitting outside who quickly tried to answer the questions,
and then send them, via mobile phone text messages, to other students
still taking the exam. Students could buy a complete set of answers
for about $120 - though, the article quotes one parent
complaining that not all the answers were accurate. Next thing
you know,
they'll
start suing.

WIRELESS WATCH
2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new
product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on
display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a
device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock
waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch
is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other
words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper.
Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what
the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other
highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth
pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module.

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PMWe've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about
shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright.
In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an
impact
a> on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on
this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan
Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset
makers to
offer
multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other
without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting
and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a
decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera
phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a
huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and
will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less
opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones
begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to
get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just
bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to
buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're
upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly)
over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real
problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will
cost lots of money and anger many people.
