Microsoft Corp. long ago proved itself a dominant force in the
software industry. But does a company known for PC operating systems
and productivity software have the chops to make it in the music biz?
That’s the central question this week amid widespread reports
that Microsoft is poised to unveil its long-awaited MSN Music download
store. The MSN service will compete against established services such
as Roxio Inc.’s Napster, RealNetworks Inc.’s RealPlayer
Music Store and…

Music Sales Up In The US
Music Sales Up In The US
04/09/2004 05:29 PMThis is a whole lot of nothing, but it turns out that
mus
ic sales in the US were noticeably up in the first quarter of this
year. Of course, when it comes to reasons why, you get totally
different interpretations from different people. Unfortunately, the
RIAA believes that their "education campaign" (suing everyone) has
been effective. A much more likely explanation is a combination of a
few factors, mainly (a) the economy is starting to get better and (b)
there were a couple of strong album releases that targeted a more
diverse audience than the typical latest teeny bopper project. Having
legitimate download stores probably didn't hurt matters, though, it's
unclear how much it actually helped. Of course, since the RIAA is so
focused on the downloading thing, this means they're going to keep on
suing, despite increasing evidence that downloads don't harm industry
sales.
A way to increase music sales
A way to increase music sales
05/29/2004 09:37 AMI hear songs on the radio and usually cannot remember 5 minutes
late who the artist was. When I was younger 20 years to be exact I was
up to speed on all the latest releases etc. I had a DJ gig as a part
time job at a very popular club. The only real reason I liked being a
DJ was it got me into all of the popular clubs and was a very good
outlet to meeting women. But today I rely on my kids to tell me who
the artist is. But when I do go looking for music it is frustrating
sorting through all of the cuts in a album to find the correct track.
Techdirt is reporting that song analysis software helps listeners get
to the good part in order to find tracks quickly. [Techdirt]

Music Industry Sales Slump as Artists
Look for New Web Distribution
06/24/2004 05:04 AMThe music industry is playing catch-up for a platform of legal
downloads from the Internet. There is wide spread confusion in the
industry today as many solo artists and record labels cash in on the
value of the web. The Internet and web-technology are jointly
recognised as the way forward however reluctance to embrace new
digital mediums at an early stage has lead to a difficult starting
point. Much of the industry has found, to their embarrassment, that
they are struggling with a suitable online strategy and continued
reduction in sales. [PRWEB Jun 24, 2004]
