06/22/2005 02:06 AMLast week Matt Mullenweg asked me a few questions about the Yahoo! Web
Search API and Yahoo! Site Search. It turned out that he was looking
for a better way to provide search for WordPress.org and thought we
had just what he needed. A few days later, I find out that he was
right. In New WP.org Search, he writes about implementing the new
search support: I went to the site to see how much of a pain it

out (via Scott
Loftesness). The interesting thing is that ranking
algorithm used seems
to be very similar to PageRank used by Google. For example, I
am the 11th 'Don'
on both services. I used to be the 9th but the
acceleration of global
warming trend dropped me down a couple of notches.

Google Site Search Change
Google Site Search Change
01/25/2004 09:24 AMGoogle has a made a subtle but big change with site searches. You
can now do a "site" search with no keywords and Google will return
all pages in its index for that site. Here's one for this site, though
I'm curious how Google thinks it has 7,170 pages.
You used to have to enter a keyword, so Google would search the
site for that word. This is a handy way to check that a site is in
the Google index.

Google Adwords vs. Yahoo Search
Google Adwords vs. Yahoo Search
06/17/2005 07:22 PMGoogle designer on Yahoo! search
Google designer on Yahoo! search
02/19/2004 11:34 AMA Google user-interface designer has some pithy thoughts on Yahoo!'s
new search product:
Google's search for 'cameras' gives a sponsored link for cameras at
Buy.com at the top of the page, and eight AdWords ads down the side.
The first four results make perfect sense: DP Review, Short Courses
the leading publisher of photography-related eBooks, Conatax/Yashica,
and Nikon USA. As you go farther down the list, there's more useful
stuff.
Now try Yahoo's version. Right off the bat you have cross-sell links
to products, and sponsored results that mimic web results which, along
with the standard AdWordsClone ads on the right, push the first actual
web search result below the fold, where most users won't even see it.
But say you do scroll down and see 'top 20 web results' (out of
27,700,000). The first one on the list is for Jersey Swimwear, USA
with the blurb: "Coming soon -- Jersey swimwear for MILKDUDS.COM!"
