Nintendo And Sony Gear Up To Fight It
Out Over Handheld Gaming
05/06/2004 12:55 PMIt must be fun to speculate when there's nothing much to go on. Wired
News is talking about the upcoming
battle
between Nintendo and Sony for their next generation handheld
gaming systems. The problem is that the details of both systems
aren't expected until next week at E3. So, for the time being, we're
left with speculation based on the little bits of info they've
released and their expected target markets. Many people are already
declaring Sony the winner, despite the fact that Nintendo has a lot
more experience in this market (98% marketshare right now). The real
question is whether or not that's defining the market too narrowly.
If you define it as a segment of the overall video gaming market, then
obviously Sony has a pretty good track record as well. Also, as the
article points out, Sony's plan to go after the young adult market may
be a lot more lucrative. Of course, there's a reason that we actually
wait until the market speaks before declaring a winner, so idle
predictions based on speculation might not be worth much.

Nintendo Copies Sony Who Copied Apple
With Retail Store Plans
04/06/2005 02:16 PMA year ago, Sony decided to mimic Apple's widespread success with
their retail stores by
settin
g up more retail stores of their own (the company already had a
few). Now, it appears that Nintendo seems to think this is a good
idea as well, and will be
creating a Nintendo store in
NY. Of course, it's still questionable how well these stores work
for anyone other than Apple. Remember, computer maker Gateway tried
the same thing and ended up
losin
g a ton of money before closing the stores down. It works for
Apple for a few reasons: mainly, that the company prefers to sell
direct and has been de-emphasizing channel resellers for some time.
This isn't true of Sony or Nintendo -- and the stores either upset
their resellers greatly, or have to be priced way over the regular
going retail price. At the same time, Apple's stores work because of
the culture (maybe we should drop that trailing "ure") surrounding
Apple products. The stores are designed to play up that culture and
the whole concept of the Apple experience. It's not clear many other
consumer electronics makers can pull off the same sort of success
without the same level of devoted followers.

So something happened to me while I was watching this
video of the Sony PSP from the Tokyo Game Show. I think it was in the
middle of the Darkstalkers game that I realized that all my
worries about battery life, size, and durability were sort of moot,
because I want to play portable games that look like that right
now. I'm not ready to call it the next portable platform winner,
but if they can eke more than the rumored 2-3 hours of play time out
of that battery they've got a very good shot at stealing the majority
market from Nintendo.

First Trojan for handhelds now in the
wild
08/06/2004 07:56 AMA malicious Trojan horse program has emerged for Pocket PCs, antivirus
companies announced but they characterised the threat as relatively
low.
The program, known alternately as Backdoor.Bardor.A and
WinCE.Brador.a, lets an attacker gain full control of the handheld and
is the first such "backdoor Trojan" program to emerge for
Pocket PCs. However, such backdoor programs are not capable of
propagating on their own and instead must be sent as email attachments
or through similar means, making them less dangerous.
Symantec rated the bug a "one," the lowest on its five-point
scale. In a statement, the company offered the standard warning not to
open or execute files from unknown sources.
"Backdoor server and Trojan horse programs often use enticing
file names to trick users into executing them," said Oliver
Friedrichs, senior manager, Symantec Security Response. The bug
appears to be limited to devices that use an ARM processor and
Microsoft's Pocket PC operating systems, Symantec said.
Last month, researchers identified the first Windows CE virus, which
researchers said was mostly a "proof-of-concept" bug, or one
designed to demonstrate its own feasibility.
