Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player?

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player? 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

nextsonyhdd1.jpg imageSo there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).

Update: Okay, we're talking fake here. Babelfish failed me and the intern is probably curled up in a nest of barely-legal college hotties. At least he better be.

Sony takes aim at iPod with new
hard-disk Walkman
07/01/2004 08:50 AM
Sony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

Item! I have it on good word that Sony is planning on launching another hard drive-based music player, called the Sony NW-HD1. It's all rumor at this point, of course, but according to my source it will be branded under the Walkman name and has "far better styling than the Vaio offer." Sony is apparently shopping it around to various outlets now to see what people think in preparation of an autumn launch. If anyone can grab me a picture of this mythical new unit, I would bake you the most delicious cupcake man has ever baked. Developing!

Okay, let me get this straight... My GMail account is good for 1GB. I could probably use some of my next invites to get myself a few more accounts, let's say 4. It seems reasonable. That's 5GB of e-mail storage. My Yahoo Mail Plus account has 2GB of storage (employee perk). I could add a few more "normal" Y! Mail accounts at 100MB each. 10 would get me another gig, bringing my Yahoo total to 3GB and my grand total...

Although there's no word on price yet, the feature set looks nice, with a built-in FM tuner and recorder, line-in recording, text viewing (something that is missing from way too many players), and USB 2.0, as well as a variety of major audio formats. And the best news? It looks like the i-Bead 1000 will be making it to Europe and the US; previous i-Bead players have been Asia-only.

The Everio GZ-MC500E allows the user to easily swap out the existing 4GB Microdrive card making future upgrades simple and also offers myriad quality settings to increase recording time from its default 60 minutes (near-DVD-quality) to as many as 5 hours of video. The infoSync piece has more on their personal experience with the $1,800 device, but overall their impressions were that it looks to be quite the camcorder. It also includes a separate SD/MMC card slot and supports PictBridge for direct-to-printer connectivity. JVC says it will launch sometime this month.

Green tea is an environmentally sound substitute for diamond polishing compound used in the preparation of super-smooth hard-disk read-write heads.
John Lombardi, at Ventana Research based in Tuscon, Arizona in the US, suspected that green tea might also provide be an effective compound for polishing magnetic read-write heads. This was because tannin, a chemical that gives tea and coffee a bitter taste, binds to certain ceramic and metal materials. It is this quality that causes it to stain teapots and mugs...

It even bundles in a satellite decoder, although it can only tape that direct to hard drive or DVD -- probably not a big problem, especially since you can freely move video around from format to format without restriction (according to Sharp, at least). The hard drive is only 80GB, which is sort of puny these days, but could probably be upgraded without too much worry. The DV-HRW30 is set to hit Nipponese stores July 1st for around ¥95,000.

Engadget: Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising "twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x advantage is to cheat.

RadioYourWay: MP3 Player, AM/FM Recorder 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

radioyourway.jpgFor you talk radio fans, Pogo! Products (they're that excited) offers their new RadioYourWay LX. Featuring a built in MP3/WMA player and a voice recorder, the LX also allows you to listen to and record both FM AND AM radio. I'd be remiss to out and say that this is the first AM-capable MP3 recorder out there, but it's the first I've seen, so there's that. It also looks strikingly like an ugly iPod, but its ability to schedule recording times using a daily or weekly timer function is pretty cool, so it's forgiven. It also lets you record from any external source straight to MP3 and comes with 128MB of memory for $200 (or 512MB for $250), with the option to expand past 1GB using its SD slot.

It's started shipping today, so if you can't get enough AM talk show radio, pick yours up now.
