Language hacking for fun 'n profit
Language hacking for fun 'n profit
10/28/2003 11:08 PMWell, fun at least. You may or may not know, but Parrot's got a simple
but functional Forth implementation as part of it. Nothing fancy, just
the base line scanner and math functions, but the compiler works so
you can do things like 10 20 + . and get 30 as you'd expect, or :
GIMME_30 10 20 + . ; if you wanted to package it up as a new word.
Anyway, I need a Parrot language a bit higher-level than plain
assembly for work, and if anything counts as "a bit higher level than
assembly" it's Forth. Heck,...

Flexilis's John Hering
08/06/2004 03:08 PM
We pinged Flexilis's John Hering [second from the left], part of the
team behind the world record-setting Bluetooth connection (and
exploit) and creators of the BlueSnipe rifle. John talked about the
still-lingering weaknesses in most current Bluetooth-enabled phones,
plans Flexilis has in the future to help cell phone manufacturers lock
down their security, and how many video game industry executives'
phones you can scan at E3 in just 90 minutes.
One thing John asked me to make clear, though, and I thought I'd do
it up front. None of these tests have involved hacking into any phones
that weren't authorized by the participants. The record-setting
Bluesnarf attack was done with one of their own phones, for instance.
But just because they didn't doesn't mean they couldn't.
Lucky for us they're trying to play by the rules and help the
Bluetooth community batten down its hatches.
It's runs a little long, but I added magical color codes to make it
easier on the eyes. Read on inside.

Not-for-profit versus for-profit economy
Not-for-profit versus for-profit economy
01/07/2004 04:28 PMToday's Boston Globe carries two contrasting front-page
stories. "As economy gains, outsourcing surges"
talks about how American workers at for-profit companies must compete
with 84 million Filipinos, many of whom are well-educated, speak good
English, and are delighted to work for $300/month. Things are
looking more cheerful for U.S. workers in the not-for-profit
sector. A front-page story on Boston University's
search for a new president revealed that the school decided to pay Dan
Goldin $1.8 million in exchange for... not working at all.
Considering that Mr. Goldin had yet to start his job, that's a pretty
good hourly rate. You could hire a staff of 45 Filipino
engineers for ten years with that $1.8 mil!
[Update: the Globe runs a three-article series on "the white
collar job migration". Article 2 is "US workers see hard times" and includes a quote
from a venture capitalist: "Right when you think about Employee
11, you should think about India. My view is you should not
start a company from scratch in the United States ever again.''
Article 3 is "US business students find
opportunity is global" and talks about how MBAs are
adapting. A more interesting article appears in the same issue,
November 4, "As work shifts,
internship in India the new rite of passage" and starts with "An
increasing number of US students are going to India to intern at top
information technology services firms or to participate in tours that
allow them to network with the country's corporate elite." The
American interns, most of whom are MBAs or MBA students, get paid
about $350/month (compared to their old internships of $7000/month in
the U.S.).]

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth
06/10/2004 11:38 AM
The
Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the
short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a
new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast
as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data
Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and
remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word,
however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate
decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.

Car hacking
12/19/2004 03:40 PMRace for the Ultimate Car Hacks By Michelle Deli People have been
tinkering with their cars since the first horseless buggy hit the
road. Now, thanks to onboard computerized systems that control
everything from engine management systems to radios, hackers can
customize their rides in ways that are likely to have Henry Ford doing
back flips in his grave. Feeding this need for speed with aftermarket
computer chips and simple upgraded components gneerates $25
million…

Hacking An Election
Hacking An Election
02/10/2004 02:41 AMNothing particularly new here if you've been following the whole issue
on problems with electronic voting machines, but Salon has a fairly
comprehensive piece describing
the concerns of those who want to stop current voting
machines from being used in elections. It describes some of the
not-quite-so-secure techniques Diebold used to "secure" their machines
- including leaving the necessary password out in the open. It also
talks about how comments in the source code of the Diebold machines
make it clear that the engineers knew that parts of the software don't
work, and yet it was still used in elections. The responses from
those who defend the electronic voting systems are a bit scary, as
they basically ignore the point. Instead, they talk about how other
voting methods have problems as well, and how difficult or expensive
it would be to fix these voting machines. Whoever said democracy was
supposed to be cheap?
Update: Whoops. A new report says
electronic voting machines in North Carolina
lost 436 ballots last year.
