Mobl0g/Phonebl0g Software Roundup 05/13/2004 09:16 AM

In the search for a mobile blogging tool for Palm, Anil de Mello has rounded himself up a very nice list of some of the current mobile and phone blogging softwares. Nice enough I thought I'd point you to it, anyway, oh ye that do your blogging away from your...

Flickr Fun - New TSL Mobl0g

Flickr Fun - New TSL Mobl0g 04/10/2005 12:47 AM

I've had a Flickr account since the service first started, but I've never really used it. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to set up a new moblog on my own site since TextAmerica no longer offers RSS feeds for free accounts, so now I’m joining all of the cool kids and hanging out on Flickr instead. It will mostly be my moblog, although I may post other pictures down the road. For family and friends, the RSS feed is here and my tags are here. In a way, it’s my own little experiment to see how well I do at adding metadata to my photos online since I’ve been horrible at doing this in the past.

First Aibo with it's own Mobl0g 02/18/2004 01:27 PM
Usually, moblogs are weblogs containing posted photos from mobile phones or digital cameras. Phillip M. Torrone tells us he is now sharing his moblog with a Sony Aibo that can post random shots from its internal camera to the blog. Phillip describes it this way: "the robot dog posts once every few hours automatically using its built in camera, his built in wifi and emails it to the site." This might be the first robot with its own blog; well, provided you don't count Robot Frank's online diary.

New mobl0g - Thanks Boris and chicgeek! 01/16/2004 11:31 AM

Thanks to Boris and chicgeek for making me a new moblog. I ripped off the "crop it square" look from TypePad and Boris and chicgeek figured out that categories made sense and rewrote the scripts. Boris did the design with his usual magic and chicgeek did the coding. Thanks a lot guys. It looks/works MUCH better. It's officially upgraded from version .2 alpha straight to version 2. ;-)

MoBlog 0.3 (Default branch)

MoBlog 0.3 (Default branch) 04/11/2005 03:52 AM
MoBlog is a script for mobile blogging using email. All attachments are retained in their attached order. Image attachments will be rendered inline, and other attachments will have a link to the file rendered. It supports the Blogger and MetaWeblog XML-RPC APIs.
Changes:
The program was rewritten in Ruby. Support for running commands against image files (to resize them, for example) was added.

Mobl0g image import app

Mobl0g image import app 04/29/2004 01:32 PM
BoingBoing reader Joshua says:
A few weeks ago, I read the post you guys made about MoblogUK, a creative commons licensed alternative to TextAmerica. I'd been searching for an alternative for awhile, so I was pretty excited to find it. After switching I wanted a way to get my images from TextAmerica over to the new site at MoblogUK, so I wrote this app to make the process easy. Besides parsing a TextAmerica moblog and sending the entries off to MoblogUK it can also save your TextAmerica entries locally in an XML/XSL format...in case you ever want to do that for some reason!

Public Warchalking Mobl0g

Public Warchalking Mobl0g 12/02/2003 01:02 AM
I proposed the idea of using a TextAmerica moblog as a means to document wifi hotspots in an article I wrote for MacMerc.com earlier this year. The response was underwhelming. So now I'd like to offer the service to you folks, the experts in the wardriving community. To post your pics and info, email the images as JPEG attachments, include the name of the location as the email's subject and the specifics of the hotspot in the body of the message and send it to the moblog. I hope you'll make some use of it.

Newspaper Opens Up Mobl0g For Readers

Newspaper Opens Up Mobl0g For Readers 01/27/2004 05:18 PM
If you ask people who have been involved in big news stories, they almost always say that the press got it wrong. This leads to a general feeling that the traditional press never gets the full story - which is why there seems to be a constant (and somewhat pointless) argument as to whether or not "blogs" compete with the traditional press. There's room for both - as they serve different purposes. Alan Reiter points out that the San Diego Union-Tribune has apparently signed a deal with textamerica to prov ide moblogs for readers. For those who don't keep up with this stuff, moblogs are blogs with content (often pictures) sent in from mobile phones. This is a pretty big step, though it might not seem like it at first. It's a newspaper admitting that some of its readers may have a better (photographic) take on things that are happening out there than they have themselves. It will be interesting to see how quickly other news sites follow. Of course, as with anything like this, there will be an awful lot of junk that shows up on the moblogs, and many detractors will point to all this as a reason why it's a pointless experiment. However, it's not the junk that's the point - but the few gems that come out of all that junk, and it will help to make people much more involved with the news generating process. The nice thing about blogs is that they provide so much more around the news story: whether it's additional details, opinions or context. Seeing that surrounding a newspaper story could be very interesting as it paints a much more complete picture of what happened. Of course, if newspapers really wanted to get people involved, why focus on just moblogging? Why not offer full blogging capabilities to readers?

Phil [Kaplan] (aka PUD) of FuckedCompany.com fame has started an anonymous moblogging project. Basically you send your photo to pics@mobog.com and a minute later they are on his site ready for users to make comments on them.
Jeff Jarvis calls it anonymous instant photophone moblogging, a phrase which is giving me a heavy wallop of jargon vertigo right about now.

from NASA Spirit

Now *that* is a photoblog. Chronologically indexed gallery of interplanetary snapshots from this weekend's Mars landing. The first images sent back are of limited quality -- and only in black and white -- because data transmission rate from Spirit's antenna back to Earth is limited. Higher-res color images are expected to be relayed back from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey Spacecraft later today, according to Mission Control. At left:

"This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has been further processed, resulting in a significantly improved 360 degree panoramic view of the rover on the surface of Mars."

Link to NASA's Mars moblog, li nk to full-size, 360-degree composite panorama image. Link to SF Chron story with details on the image transmission process. (Thanks, Warren)

E3 roundup 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Another E3 is ready to wrap up. Before it rides off into the sunset until 2006, check out Kurt Mackey's roundup of all things E3.

The big news at this year’s E3 was the introductions of next generation consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. The marketing material’s been covered pretty extensively, and E3 was a good chance for scrubs like me to get (or attempt to get) some more information about the upcoming consoles.

Microsoft was the big winner when it came to showing off next-generation consoles. Sony was second, and about all Nintendo had to say about the Revolution was that it's about the size of three DVD cases. Read on for the definitive E3 summary.

Review Roundup

Review Roundup 09/25/2004 05:03 PM

A roundup of the stuff I've seen and used in the past few months:

  • Riding Giants was fantastic, doing for surfing what Dogtown and Z Boys did for skateboarding: making a sport interesting to regular folks. The big wave stuff at the very end is really incredible, though if I had to find any fault with this movie, it kind of glossed over the 80s revival of big wave surfing, especially all the drama at the Eddie Aikau contests.
  • The folks at Bigha sent me a Jasper Laser to play with, and it actually works as described. On dark, clear nights, you can point at stars surprisingly well, and folks next to you can see what you're pointing at. For complete amateur astronomers, this is often the biggest problem as you point and try to describe stuff to others. The laser worked so well one night that I heard my next door neighbor ask "what in the hell is that?!"
  • The "cr ippy duck" bag from Crumpler is the best laptop/camera bag I've ever owned, and might just be the last one I need. The laptop sleeve fits my 12" powerbook well and I can toss the charger, my digital rebel, an extra lens, and an external flash into the rest of the interior space. Basically I can carry everything I might need in something smaller than most of the messenger bags I've used in the past.
  • My bag is also filled with ziplinq cables, which work great at connecting and charging my cell phone, my ipod, and my CF card reader, in addition to connecting to ethernet when need be and modem connections as well.
  • Joel on Software's book is a surprisingly good read. It's basically a book of essays and blog entries but it's really well written, though skews towards hardcore (C++) software development.
  • I mentioned Medium Footwear on this site about a year ago, but finally found a shop with a good selection in San Francisco. I own a pair of these and they're some of my all-time favorite shoes. Interesting on the outside, and a comfortable skate shoe on the inside. Perfect.
  • Jason took me to an all-risotto restaurant called Risotterria that was really good and worth checking out if you're in Manhattan.
