The Telltale Keypress

The Telltale Keypress

The Telltale Keypress 05/13/2004 09:15 AM

A scientist at a security symposium this week says he's developed a technique for snooping keystrokes by listening to the sounds made by the keyboard.

Each key on computer keyboards, telephones and even ATM machines makes a unique sound as each key is depressed and released, according to a paper entitled "Keyboard Acoustic Emanations" presented Monday by IBM research scientist Dmitri Asonov.

All that is needed is about $200 worth of microphones and sound processing and PC neural networking software.

It's always something, isn't it?

Some time ago, I blogged about Telltale Weekly, a site that records and posts audiobook editions of public domain texts, charging small sums ($0.25-$4 or so) for MP3/OGG/AAC downloads.

I just revisited the site and gosh, there's been a lot of good stuff posted since I last stopped by (there's an RSS feed for new titles that I've just added to my newsreader): classic stories and essays by Twain, Jack London, L Frank Baum, O Henry; poetry by Walt Whitman; political speeches and essays by Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass... My cup runneth over.

And there's good karma at Telltale: after five years or 100,000 downloads, TTW will release each track into the public domain; also, partial proceeds from Ogg downloads are donated to the Xiph Foundation, who support Ogg development. Link

SpyView: Photoshop Classic Effects: The
Essential Effects Every User Needs to
Know
12/22/2004 01:26 AM
Author Scott Kelby has written an easy-to-read book that any serious Adobe Photoshop user is sure to want on their desk for easy access to the more than 100 “classic” Photoshop projects. Step-by-step, Kelby walks the reader through techniques that result in the stunning, professional effects that you see everyday in magazines, on billboards, in newspapers and on the Internet. Examples of the projects include using one photo as the background and focal point; creating chrome bevelled type; tinting black and white photos and creating reflections and various shadowing techniques. Kelby states simply that “these are the effects your clients expect you to know if you are a professional Photoshop user”. Kelby, editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of several bestselling Photoshop books, has cut the learning time dramatically for newer users of the program. Photoshop Classic Effects doesn’t require you to work through one tutorial after another, but enables you to easily find the project you’re interested in using, which is why you’ll want to keep it handy for future reference. Kelby has used language throughout the book that is easy to understand and provides the user commands for both Mac and Windows platforms. The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs by Brand X Pictures. If you want to follow along using the same photos Kelby used in his projects, the low-res images are available for download at http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/classicphotos. If you’re interested in this book, but still undecided whether to make the purchase, you might want to try a few of Kelby’s samples for yourself. Publisher Peach Pit Press has included some of the author’s step-by-step projects on a tip sheet which is available for download from http://www.peachpit.com/title/0321272250#. Bluetooth motorcycle helmet

Bluetooth motorcycle helmet 09/14/2004 11:17 AM
Xeni Jardin: "Born to be unwired"? Motorola and Italian design firm Momodesign teamed up to create a Bluetooth-enabled motorcycle helmet. Something about the combination of bluetooth and motorcycles sounds really scary. Snip from the press release:
Built on the award-winning design of Motorola's popular HS810, the wireless helmet headset is the latest addition to Motorola's leading portfolio of stylish and innovative Bluetooth products. (...) The helmet is stylish and open-faced, its design draws inspiration from air force pilots helmets, with anti-scratch visor and carbon fibre details for fashion conscious people with a modern approach to travel and city life. Whether chatting to friends or work, the Motorola / MOMODESIGN helmet means riders will no longer get tangled up in awkward wires getting on and off their bikes. Taking and making calls is easy as all functions (answer, end, redial, voice dial and volume) can be made from the cover on the helmet. An essential accessory for urbanites who demand to stay in touch at all times, whether in the car, on a bike, in the office or at home. The Motorola / MOMODESIGN helmet offers you seamless communication due to the unique headset module. There need be no break in the conversation when you get off the bike -- just remove the headset module from the helmet, attach it to the neck loop and continue talking -- no one will even know you've changed location!

RNC Security's Wireless Helmet Cams

RNC Security's Wireless Helmet Cams 08/27/2004 01:48 PM

head_helmet_cam.jpg imageOver 200 of the patrol officers bussed in as part of the Department of Homeland Security's ramp up to the Republican National Convention will be equipped with wirelessly networked helmet cameras. Each of the helmet cams will broadcast back to a central control room where officials will be able to monitor and compile a bigger picture of what exactly is being seen by the security officers.

The units don't use Wi-Fi, though, so cracking the system used by the security forces might be a little difficult (if that's your thing). Instead, the camera uploads via satellite, which then travels back to the central booth via an encrypted internet stream.

Wouldn't it be great if the public could see those streams, too? Maybe one of the hacker groups will cobble together a free network equivalent.

Momo_Fighter_Helmet.jpg imageMomodesign, maker of all sorts of middle-to-high-end automotive and cycling parts has revealed their new Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet, the result of a collaboration with Motorola. And while the technology itself isn't especially notable - it is just a Bluetooth headset, after all - I think the helmet design is just lovely. I'm a huge fan of open-face helmets, even if they aren't as safe. Jaw-droppingly unsafe, you could say.

And if you're taking a call on the helmet and have stopped riding, the headset detaches and can be worn in a neck loop. Now I just need to get a bike.
