Major Google Security Bug Found :
Microsoft.com Removed From Index
05/13/2004 07:57 AM

Various discussions on WebmasterWorld over the last few weeks alleged the possibility of a security bug in the Google removal URL feature. A Google user submitted microsoft.com for removal. We are stunned to report - not only did it work, but Microsoft.com just went PR0.

Internet security experts have found two "flaws" with Microsoft's long-awaited security update for its Windows XP operating system but the software giant insists that the new Service Pack 2 (SP2) is secure. Microsoft says SP2 offers users the latest security "innovations" but Internet security experts say hackers could exploit cracks in SP2 defences to exploit a user's computer. Microsoft began rolling out SP2 this week. It says the update fixes several security holes and provides new protective features.

Paul McFedries: Google trademark concerns. Google's trademark lawyer writes: "We ask that you help us to protect our brand by deleting the definition of "google" found at wordspy.com or revising it to take into account the trademark status of Google." I like Cory's take: "I've googled many factoids about this in the past, being the good blogger that I am, and printed them out so I could xerox them for my friends. That's all I have to say for now, since I have to run out and buy some kleenex and aspirin, and trademark lawyers can kiss my ass." The Wordspy definition: "To search for information on the Web, particularly by using the Google search engine"...

Sporadic reports coming in of a brewing problem. Various sites are being removed without webmaster action from Google. They all are getting the standard "you site has been removed" email from Google. We have never seen this particular situation before. We don't know if it is an isolated incident, or if someone has indeed figured out a way to get people removed from the index (such as a competitor).

In the meantime, Microsoft released a toolbar suite. Uhmmm, wow?

Gizmodo-gbi_pimpin.jpg image

So this week's Google Buzz Index might not be as interesting to everyone else as is it is to me, since I'm writing about Personal Such-and-such Players all week long, but it's something I really had wondered about, especially with the influx of new media players coming out of Asia. I really didn't expect "personal video player" to take such a huge lead, but there's no mistaking it -- that's the term most used to describe these devices. I'm a little disappointed, too; I'd much rather use 'Personal/Portable Media Player' as it is a more accurate description of what these devices can do. Once we ever get around to changing our categories, my guess is that PortableMedia will still be what we go with over PersonalVideo, numbers be damned.

So I thought I'd try to get all sciencey on you, here, and did some informal Google mining to see what people are talking about. I made these first two graphs in Excel all by myself!

The first is a comparison of keyboarded messaging tools: the Treo 600, the RIM Blackberry (all models), and the upcoming Motorola MPx (for spice). The listing on the left (horizontal, not the vertical label) is my Google search string, just so you can check the search terms yourself if you want. As I said, this isn't an exact science, but I tried my best to weed out false positives. The Treo wins the buzz index this round, but the MPx has a strong start for something that won't even be out until the fall.
