Wal-Mart's Linux Push

Wal-Mart's Linux Push 12/22/2004 01:00 AM
Wal-Mart is pursuing its own Linux strategy, retail-style, with desktop computers and now this laptop model. For under $500 you can get a well-equipped machine with both the OS and OpenOffice. I'm no fan of Wal-Mart, and I won't shop there. But the Wal-Mart ruthlessness that makes me dislike the company is also responsible for what may be one of the only serious challenges to the Windows monopoly to date.

ATI readies big Linux driver push 09/24/2004 01:37 PM
ATI IS here in Cyprus to outline its recently announced X700 and Catalyst drivers.
Terry Makedon, a senior product manager, largely talked about those, but he did say the firm is readying a major push in the next few weeks to outline its plans for Linux driver support. He said that ATI has three main goals for Linux. He said that ATI supports Linux which represents around four per cent of the market, and that the firm’s Linux efforts are proportional to the market.

He said that ATI had rebuilt its Linux driver team with a lot of new developers. He said ATI will improve its test process including automated test methodologies, lots of new ways of testing more efficiently. He said ATI’s priority was to make PCIe Linux drivers ready as well as provide support for AMD64.

Novell Continues Linux Push, Buys SUSE 11/04/2003 01:20 PM
Well, just about everyone is discussing this story this morning, so just a quick note on the news that Novell has bought SUSE Linux just a few months after buyin g Ximian. Connecting the two very obvious dots isn't particularly difficult (which also makes the third "anti-SCO" dot a little more understandable). The deal also includes an investment from IBM, of which much will probably be spent fending off angry SCO lawyers.

Linux on the desktop at IBM 11/15/2003 07:50 PM

Spotted on Slashdot, IBM's Open Source Desktop - Directions for today... and Tomorrow presentation includes one slide that really caught my attention:

To continue our own journey to becoming an on demand business, IBM expects to migrate our internal desktop environment, where appropriate, to open standards based on the Linux platform.

Of course, depending on how they define "appropriate" this could be a lot less exciting than it looks. Still, it's a pretty huge boost for the Linux desktop movement.
