Radio Enters Digital Era with U.S.
Ruling
03/20/2003 01:05 PM

In a move that brings radio into the digital era, the Federal Communications Commission has approved a technology for broadcasting digital radio within current analog channels. This new technology will enable FM radio to be near-CD quality and will allow broadcasters to transmit additional data services to listeners.

USERLAND ENTERS THE 21ST CENTURY

blogpicRadio Userland has appointed Steve Kirks as its Product Manager to jump-start enhancements to the Radio Userland blogging tool. First up are some new themes, layout cleanup, improving upstreaming, comments moderation, improvements to usage stats, and upgraded documentation.

Improvements that Sloggers think are most needed per my survey last year include:
  • Streamlining blogroll ('navigation links') maintenance, flagging of links recently updated, and auto-verification of links
  • Archives that display more than one day at a time
  • Easier ability to put HTML in comments, and to preview comments
  • Ability to display comments below the main post (for those that want to print out both)
  • Ability to change the appearance and content of individual Categories without having to fiddle with code in the 'www' folder
  • Simplification and improved documentation of Outlining
  • Google search bar addition (to search the blog's archives)
  • Ability to post just the headline and/or selected extract from a long post on the main blog page, with a link to the rest of the article
  • A Table of Contents for your archive
  • A Directory of all Radio Userland blogs (in which users could update their own profile), and other community-building tools
  • Making the product more 'foolproof' and easier recovery after a hard disk crash
  • Group blogging
  • Ability to maintain a blog on more than one computer, with synchronization
  • Improved features for remote posting over the Web
To their credit, Radio has introduced some of the additions and improvements requested in my survey already, including Trackback and a WYSIWYG editor for Mozilla users.

This is a great development. What else is needed? (Yeah, I know, better service, though I confess I've found the service good). I'll bundle up all the comments and send them to Steve, or you can e-mail him directly from his blog's Radio category.

Digital AM and FM radio

Digital AM and FM radio 03/13/2003 10:20 AM

We've largely ignored digital satellite radio here on Gizmodo. Sure the sound quality was better, but the offerings seem rather lackluster, the monthly fees are too high, and the fact that both XM and Sirius seem teetering on the edge of bankruptcy provides an even greater disincentive to invest in the equipment. But now regular terrestrial AM and FM radio stations are going digital. It'll require new radios, but there won't be subscription fees. The only problem is that the US has adopted a different standard from the rest of the world. Great.

Glenn Fleishman on digital radio

Glenn Fleishman on digital radio 01/04/2005 06:20 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Glenn Fleishman sez: "I wrote my own take on a Wired News story about the RIAA's lobbying of the FCC to get broadcast flags embedded in digital radio content. Digital radio is now offered by about 150 AM/FM stations in the U.S. even though only about 10,000 to 35,000 (estimated) high-definition or HD radios that can receive the digital content were sold in 2004. Terrestrial digital AM/FM will grow to at least 2,000 stations by 2007, and millions of receivers by 2008, according to analysts. With HD, AM stations sound like FM (and don't disappear in underpasses) and FM stations sound like CD quality. Reportedly! I haven't heard it yet." Link

06/09/2004 10:57 AM

A-6000_large.gif imageAria Digital has a new DAB radio out, this one made specifically for use with PCs or laptops over USB, called the A-6000. It follows Aria's "Global DAB" policy, too, which means that it uses both of the primary DAB bands (Band 111 and L-Band), allowing you to pick up DAB broadcasts pretty much anywhere they are sprayed out. It has both USB and SPDIF outs, and can record to MPEG2, MP3, or WAV, as well as work with the Electronic Programme Guide (like a DAB TiVo) for recording any shows you might miss. It's currently shipping for about £100.

A Broadcast Flag For Digital Radio?

A Broadcast Flag For Digital Radio? 05/24/2004 06:59 PM
The RIAA isn't exactly known for understanding concepts like fair use, or that giving consumers what they want generally helps to grow a market, but now they're just wasting everyone's time. Their latest move is to push for a broadcast flag for digital radio, so that you may no longer be able to record what you hear on the radio. In other words, just as the industry is trying to convince people to switch over to digital radio for the better sound quality, they're also going to be taking away the rights people have enjoyed for ages concerning what they can do with the content they hear.

EFF reply comments to RIAA's digital
radio proposal at the FCC

EFF has just filed its reply comments in the digital radio broadcast flag docket at the FCC. My cow-orker Fred von Lohmann was in rare form with these, savaging the RIAA's goofy ideas about breaking the record button on tomoprrow's digital radios.
The RIAA’s biased and blinkered account of "copyright policy" cannot obscure the fact that copyright law expressly approves of digitalaudio home recording devices (including devices like the DAB receiver/recorder) and their noncommercial use by consumers.8 There isno copyright policy "gap" here for the Commission to fill, even if the Commission had the jurisdiction to do so. Where Congress has legislatedwith specificity, it is not for the Commission to countermand its legislative scheme.

Cambridge SoundWorks Mick Fleetwood
Signature Model Twelve Speakers
08/18/2004 08:38 AM

mick_signature.jpg imageWhen I go into the local middle- and high-schools each week for my "Gizmodo: Talkin' Teen" heart-to-heart rap session, the number one inquiry I get from the kids during our Q&A is, "Yo, when is Mick Fleetwood going to endorse a set of Cambridge SoundWorks portable speakers?" And I chuckle a little then, and walk over and my put my hand on their shoulder, and try to explain to these mixed up young persons that despite their enduring affection for Fleetwood Mac's seminal 1977 release Rumors, the pressures of Big Media conglomerates have persisted to keep Mick out of the speaker game. Then we all smoke a big doob because I'm down.

But next week, when some young gangbanger inevitably asks me that very same question, I'm going to look them right in the eyes and whisper into the mic, "Today, my young peer. Today."

Cambridge SoundWorks has not mentioned if it is appropriate to call the $400 Mick Fleetwood Signature Model Twelves' included amplifier the "Stevie Mixer," probably because that's sort of lame.

When Your Computer Will Reboot For You

When Your Computer Will Reboot For You 07/12/2004 04:24 AM
Self-healing or autonomic computing concepts aren't new. Mostly popularized by IBM starting a few years ago, research has continued in many different places in both the public and private sectors. In fact, the research efforts are increasing rapidly as people realize just how expensive computer failures are. While most efforts are still quite early on, it's clear that, rather than just trying to prevent computer problems altogether, a growing number of people are coming to terms with the fact that it's nearly impossible to build a computer system that won't have something go wrong. Thus, it may be a much more efficient route to build systems that quickly correct themselves, rather than those that never have any problems at all.

fallback-reboot is a last resort, when you need to remotely reboot a computer. It attempts to maximize its ability to get the job done by completely avoiding touching the hard disk; it opens no files, and it locks itself into memory to avoid swapping/paging. It also does not fork or exec. It includes optional cryptography.
Changes:
This release was ported to FreeBSD 5.4 Beta 1. The fallback- reboot-client can not only accept input from a TTY as before, but now also from a pipe or file.
