In Case You're a Book Author

In Case You're a Book Author 10/30/2002 09:56 AM
In Case You're a Book Author or Thanks Lisa Mann! Although I'm not a huge O'Reilly fan at times, I have to say that O'Reilly definitely has wonderful, wonderful people in places. Lisa Mann from O'Reilly puts together an author's newsletter that lets authors know about speaking and writing engagements. This is how I found out about the David Coursey interview among other things. Here's a tidbit from the latest newsletter: When you have a speaking engagement, please remember to include the title of your book(s) in your bio. Event organizers will be thrilled to include it; it telegraphs your expert status better than almost any other sentence they can include. If the topic is related to the topic of your book, ask if you can distribute fliers for your book at your session or in the goodies bags. We may be able to arrange a special discount for attendees of events you speak at. (Please try to give us as much advance warning as possible if you'll need fliers or discounts.) Some authors have added the cover image of their book to the opening or closing slides that accompany their talk. Please also email pr@oreilly.com when you confirm a speaking engagement. We can sometimes help publicize your talk, or notify local press or press attending the event. Sure this advice definitely helps O'Reilly but it also helps the author as well. It's just plain good, smart marketing. While I did think to mention the blogging book in my PHPCon talks, it wasn't on the bio afaik and I could have done more. Thanks Lisa!

New "everyday neuroscience" book from
author of Emergence

New "everyday neuroscience" book from
author of Emergence
01/16/2004 11:35 AM
Steven Johnson, the guy who wrote the brilliant Emergence (a book whose lyrical description of emergent phenomena in ant-colonies inspired both my forthcoming novella Human Readable and the ants that crawl over Appeals Court, the sequel Charlie Stross and I wrote to Jury Service, which will be published as a fix-up novel by Argosy in just a couple weeks), has a new book out: Mind Wide Open: Your Brain And The Neuroscience Of Everyday Life, which he describes as:
...an attempt to look systematically at the question of what brain science can tell you about yourself as an individual. There are a number of great books that ask questions like: How did the brain evolve? Or: how does the brain work? This book asks a related, but more intimate question: how does your brain work? In what ways can science shed light on your own personality traits, emotional habits, mental blindspots or strengths? In the book I've set myself up as a kind of guinea pig for this experiment: I take a number of tests that evaluate different cognitive faculties; I do a number of explorations with neurofeedback; I help design a series of fMRI experiments on my own head. I also have conversations with some of the world's leading brain scientists, who function as guides through this amazing inner landscape.
