Opera releases test version of new
browser software program
12/24/2004 12:09 PM
Opera Software released a beta version of its Web browser software upgrade today, adding stronger support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and technology that allows users to navigate through voice commands and have Web pages read to them. Enough improvements have been made in the beta release that the final version of this download will be turned into a major new release instead of an ordinary incremental upgrade, according to CNET News. "The new Opera version has dramatic improvements under the hood, in addition to some very helpful new features to welcome more and more users to take advantage of browsing the Internet in a fast, safe and customizable way," Opera Chief Executive Officer Jon S. von Tetzchner said in a statement. The new Opera beta version also includes user interface improvements such as bigger browsing space, cleaner menus, and better printing support, the company says. The browser also now works with Google's Gmail, correcting a problem that had led some Opera users to switch to Firefox. Opera licensed IBM's Embedded ViaVoice technology early in the year, which powers the voice support in the new release.

Improving Google Images

Improving Google Images 06/17/2002 02:01 PM
Google Images is an ambitious project from Google and of course it's nowhere near as good as the original Google Web. But much to Google's credit, it's continuously getting better. However, I think I have a few suggestions to make it better:Use Google Web - Google Web is incredible, it will very often bring back the right match as the first hit. Take advantage of this -- display images on that page.Search ALT tags - Although they're not used everywhere, ALT tags are a big source of useful information about pictures. Also, if Google Images uses them, it will encourage more authors to put better info in them, which helps Web Accessibility. The first or only image is often right - On many web pages there's only one image (like my own) or the first image is right (like Guido van Rossum's) or it's the first non-space image (like Land Rover's). Return these as results!Google Web is an incredible thing and it doesn't make sense Google Images not to take advantage of it. Right now using Google Web and then picking an image off the page is often better than Google Images. I hope that changes in the near future. Example searches that can be improved:W3C - on Google Web's first result, the W3C logo is the top image, the biggest image, the only image with "W3C" in the alt text and the only image with W3C in the filename)Scripting News - on Google Web's first result, the Scripting News logo is the largest image (and the first non-spacer) and has an ALT tag of "ScriptingNews").Do you have suggestions? Mail them in!

Google Wallet More About Micropayments
For Content?

Google Wallet More About Micropayments
For Content?
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
There's been a ton of buzz over the idea that Google was working on a PayPal competitor, and it appears that Eric Schmidt and "the powers that be" at Google finally thought it was worth speaking to the press on the matter. In discussing the Google Wallet concept, we did note that it came days after rumors of a Google iTunes-like offering as well, and that actually might tie into what Google is working on. Earlier today, there was increasing speculation that Google was more interested in a system to deliver micropayments for content than direct person-to-person financial transactions -- and that seems to be more along the lines of what Google is admitting to. While not clearly laid out, Schmidt did say that the solution they were working on wasn't really a PayPal competitor, but more of an extension of existing programs. Many people have been saying that it's likely an extension of the payment system they use for handling their paid search ad program, but extending it out to other types of content. This would also fit with Google's new video storage offering, which promised to allow people to charge for the content that people downloaded. While less surprising, this is still a bit disappointing. Micropayments seem to go in and out of fashion every few years, but never actually seem to catch on, mainly because not only do they add a monetary expense, but they have a mental transaction cost in making people stop and think about whether or not it's worth purchasing. That cost is much more expensive than most people think. Also, any micropayment-based system always leaves itself open to competitors who realize that it's going to be much more effective to give the content away, and make money elsewhere.
