The Computerized Art Critic
06/14/2004 03:33 AMWell, it's now been established that computers can, in certain
situations, beat the very best chess players in the world. Now,
they're moving on to another arena previously held onto by an elite
group of human experts: determining the authenticity of a piece of
artwork. New computer systems are being developed (similar to
computerized chess systems) that use their ability to comprehend
thousands of different attributes among many different paintings to
come up with information about what makes certain paintings
more or less likely to be by a certain artist. Of course, it
sounds like most people involved still don't want these systems to be
coming out with a final vote - but, rather are focused on using them
to suggest places for further exploration (such as pointing out a
specific difference in features between a certain painting and others
by the same artist). This may have something to do with an
increasingly litigious art world, where lawsuits have been filed by
painting owners who weren't happy to have someone suggest the painting
they owned was not by the person they thought it was. Still, this
raises the same question we
asked
a> a few weeks ago in a post about selling fraudulent artwork on eBay:
shouldn't a painting be judged on its quality, rather than who created
it?
Computerized Discouragement
Computerized Discouragement
06/01/2004 02:43 AMIn a great followup to recent stories about
autom
ating the hiring process and
autom
ating the matchmaking process, this writer is wondering if such
technologies can't be used to
make personalization systems better match your personality and
your mood. He points to a study that shows that, in a game where
a computer gives users encouraging words ("You can do it!"), players
do better than one where it gives discouraging words - and worries
that companies are going to misinterpret the results to mean that
we're always going to be getting annoyingly bland and sickly sweet
"encouragement" from our computers ("You can complete this letter!
Your computer believes in you!"). For many people, this sort of
"encouragement" gets to be pretty damn annoying, pretty damn fast.
So, instead of focusing on how to find a better job or a better date,
it would be great if such personalization technology could be used to
figure out that the
last thing a person wants to hear after
struggling through some frustrating operation on their computer is:
"The problem will soon be happily over."

Everything Needs Tech Support
When Everything Is Computerized...
Everything Needs Tech Support
04/12/2005 02:01 PMIt's no secret that more and more stuff around us every day is getting
computerized, but how that's going to impact our everyday lives
doesn't always get that much attention. One of the more interesting
elements of an increasingly high tech society is that we're going to
need a lot more tech support -- and it's not going to be acceptable to
wait 45 minutes on hold (with crappy hold music) to talk to someone
overseas who doesn't understand the problem and can't do anything to
help. Business Week is talking about the old Maytag repair guy, and
how
appliances are going high tech in a
big way. Of course, the old Maytag repair guy isn't going to be
able to fix your washing machine when its software crashes -- and with
our
chang
ing views on quality, you can be pretty sure that today's washing
machines won't last as long as the ones you bought a few decades ago.
So is it any surprise that tech companies are gearing up to get into
spaces that might seem a little out of place for them? IBM announced
today an
automotiv
e diagnostics solution to help deal with increasingly computerized
cars. What IBM has realized is that, increasingly, cars
are
computers -- and if they're 100% focused on being
in
the IT services business, they need to go where computers are
going. So, perhaps it's only a matter of time before you end up
calling IBM to come service your washing machine as well. Actually,
hopefully, the washing machine will do the calling itself.

04/10/2005 05:37 PMAP - A subway train rattles halfway into Union Square station in
Manhattan and shudders to a halt. Over a crackle of static, a voice on
the PA system announces congestion ahead and says it will be several
minutes before service resumes. Trapped commuters sigh and glance at
their watches impatiently. Some simply close their eyes in
resignation. This sort of thing and much worse has been
happening quite a lot lately. So it's no surprise that transit
snafu-weary New Yorkers are greeting with ambivalence this month's
launch of fully computer-automated trains on a 22-mile line that
intersects Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Musicians Up In Arms Again Over
Computerized Orchestra
04/14/2004 02:26 PMThere was a big fuss last year when some Broadway musicals looked into
replacing their human orchestra with a "virtual orchestra." Musicians
went on strike, and shows went off the stage for a while. Now, that
same response is happening again for an
off-Broadway musical that is trying to
use a virtual orchestra as well. Of course, the difference here,
though, is that the musical is using the exact same number of
musicians whether it's using the virtual orchestra or not.

“Safety Device”
03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell
phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US
citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are
increasingly confident to travel internationally. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]
