JSPWiki goes Atom

JSPWiki goes Atom

JSPWiki goes Atom 05/12/2004 06:53 PM

Okay, folks! Here's the cool bit of the day: JSPWiki now officially has support for the Atom feed format in the latest CVS version. It only works for the Weblog plugin for the moment, but there's now an atom.jsp, as well as a FeedDiscoveryTag so that you can find the Atom feed easily. It'll just need some tweaks to work for regular wiki pages as well.

It's live now, on this site. Check out http://www.ecyrd.com/But tUgly/atom.jsp! It even validates! :-)

Off to bed now. Must grab some sleep.

JSPWiki gains podcasting support

JSPWiki gains podcasting support 06/24/2005 10:03 PM
...which is the hype way of saying that JSPWiki supports RSS 2.0 and the enclosure-tag in 2.2.27, released about 30 seconds ago.

Essentially, all attachments on a page entries are added as enclosures, if you request a page in blog mode (and add "type=rss20" to the rss.jsp request URL to enable RSS 2.0).

Why podcasting support? Well... Let's leave it a mystery for now, shall we?

JSPWiki supports now the
rel="nofollow" attribute

JSPWiki supports now the
rel="nofollow" attribute
02/01/2005 09:48 PM
JSPWiki hates spam too. Starting from the current CVS version (2.1.140) JSPWiki supports the Google initiative for reducing comment and wiki spam. Administrators may set the "jspwiki.translatorReader.useRelNofollow" parameter to force the rel="nofollow" attribute to be added to any external links.

(Other than that, we're - or to be more precise, Andrew Jaquith is - doing a complete rework of the authentication system. This means that it will not be available in 2.2, but will be postponed to 2.4. Personally, I find this a great relief - adding the auth system to the wiki nearly killed my interest to JSPWiki development. Wikis and strong permission control just don't go well together. There has been now a lot of new development in the CVS, as I don't have to worry about the auth system anymore.)

W3C wants Atom

W3C wants Atom 05/13/2004 01:59 PM

Looks like the W3C wants the Atom community to work through them.

I'm undecided whether or not I'm for this. On the one hand, the W3C certainly has the tools to promote and document Atom. On the other hand, adding Atom to their semantic web effort could make Atom even more complex - and simplicity is what makes RSS so great, despite it's imprecise specification (via Scoble).

Atom use XML-RPC

Atom use XML-RPC 02/19/2004 11:26 AM

It's fascinating to read the comments on Russell Beattie's post about the Atom API. His concern is that he won't be able to build a client that talks to a weblog server through his Java toolkit because it doesn't allow the HTTP methods the API calls for. Further, he notes that the spec, which was openly developed, has a restrictive copyright.

The best answer is obvious, imho, use XML-RPC because it already has been adapted to and debugged in all the environments where blogging APIs need to run. By cutting almost to the bottom of the stack you will have to redo everything that took years to do. I think it's going to take longer to redo because XML-RPC didn't need to get any Java toolkits to change, it treaded more softly than the Atom does.

There's a practical side to protocol and format design that's missing in the Atom API. The goal is to make it easy for developers to hop on the bandwagon and get them committed to developing for the platform. Putting unnecessary hurdles in the way unnecessarily limits adoption, and virtually guarantees either stagnation or massive breakage. I can't imagine that either choice is what Google is looking for.

XML-RPC was designed for what they want to do and it's stood the test of time. Learn to love the pragmatic, it's how you're going to win the wars with Yahoo, Microsoft and everyone else who wants to eat your lunch.

Have Atom

Have Atom 12/22/2003 09:07 AM

At the moment this information will be useful to a small roomful of people, but this site is now serving an Atom 0.3 feed here. It should v alidate.

I’d planned all along to fold Atom support into rhymes-with-vexed-slattern; I’ve finally got around to it now that the spec is looking pretty solid with version 0.3.

For those to whom this is all Greek, Atom is a new form of AI technology that listens to all websites simultaneously, looking for anyone badmouthing you and those batting for your team; Atom responds by firing back custom-made insults and denunciations including but not limited to accusations of hypocrisy and pot-kettle-black.

Atom + CSS

Atom + CSS 10/29/2003 12:31 PM

I tried some minimal css on an experimental Atom feed and the results started to look promising - on Mozilla.  View source to see how it was done.

I then brought up the same page under IE, and it looks like IE didn't support a number of CSS features.  Worse, it seems to be stripping and/or interpreting escaped markup.  Finally, view source is not available.

Poking around to see if there were any workarounds, I came across this article by Tim Bray from 3.5 years ago...

Sigh.

A few people mentioned that my rss feeds were broken even though they passed through the validator without errors, so I mangled them a bit tonight and also added an atom feed while I was at it. Atom is the result of the rss flamewars a few months ago and, while I couldn't care less about XML, atom does appear to have a saner format. I also tried out Shrook since I've not been entirely happy with Netnewswire and found that I really like it much better, especially the iTunes style of organisation and navigation of the feeds.

Atom Meeting

Atom Meeting 06/03/2004 06:29 PM

I was at the Atom Community Meeting all day.  I had only two hours of sleep so my brain pretty much stopped working by late afternoon.  There were some good moments but, overall, it was another reminder of how a meeting can turn smart people, including me, into babbling tiredsome geeks.  Communication wasn't clear and instant understandings were rare.  Of course, my brain's capacity diminishing by the hour didn't help.

Re W3C and IETF, W3C clearly lost their bid for Atom although they made good efforts at the meeting.  I thought what W3C reps said were a bit on the cheesy side but I wasn't entirely happy with the IETF process either, like IETF WG having to use WG mailinglist for all communique and how IETF WG chairs are chosen by a IETF director.  As amazing as it sounds, IETF stunk of bureucracy, albeit one with a geeky twist.

Having to choose between techno-bureacrats and cheesy geeks financed by companies doesn't make me happy but I gave my IETF 'humm' to techno-bureacrats.  I sure hope they don't evolve into techno-rats.

I encouraged formalizing of the Atom 'group' to streamline the syndicated data standard extension approval process, but I don't think it will happen.  Neither IETF nor W3C handles extension approval process well IMHO.

BTW, Tim's post has a nice group photo he somehow managed without his glasses.

The little orange buttons that are starting to litter the web have no doubt caused mass confusion. What are they good for? Why are they there? And why don't they work? While I and others are starting to look into sugg estions for developers to alleviate this design flaw, I thought I'd take a minute to talk about what this technology potentially means to you, the user. (If you already know what RSS stands for, this article won't tell you anything new, but feel free to reference when you need to explain syndication.)
