06/24/2004 02:38 PMPCWorld is reporting that Toshiba is releasing a fuel cell this
year that is being billed as the "World's Smallest," an always-dubious
claim, but undeniably appealing, as Toshiba's .9 by 2.2 by .4 inch
cell can produce 100 milliwatts of power over 20 hours with just two
cubic centimeters of methanol. Oh, actually, as I read this again the
small unit a prototype -- it's a notebook-class version they
intend to release later in the year, which we sort of already knew
about.

07/01/2004 08:41 PMEngadget:
Sony’s Network
Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The
Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty
hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising
"twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast
talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most
people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ
probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the
battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you
get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When
everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x
advantage is to cheat.

Continuing with Sony's
announcements, NE Asia brings word that the company plans on using
Playstation 2 chips inside of new flat panel TVs to be introduced this
Fall. This announcement has confused many as it counters what Mr.
Playstation himself, Ken Kutaragi, stated in an interview during
September of last year - that "it is not the time for those rocks (PS2
chips) to be going inside of televisions." Maybe he's changed his mind
in a year?
All we can do for now is speculate, but the prospect of a TV with
integrated PS2 is sweet. For now, however, the chips "will improve the
TV's image processing capability." Damnation.

Unit and Load Testing Demos
The Visual Studio 2005 Team Test Edition introduces a suite of new
test tools. With this release, all tests including unit, Web, load and
manual testing are first class citizens in Visual Studio and can be
shared across the organization. The test results can be published to a
database, you can generate trend and historical reports, compare
different kinds of data, see how many and which bugs were found as a
result of testing, and identify which bugs are not linked to a test
that could help reproduce them.

Source Code Control and Item Tracking Demo
Visual Studio Team Foundation, the server component of the Visual
Studio 2005 Team System provides integrated source control, work item
tracking, reporting, and custom policies that enable teams to
efficiently manage change in your software development projects. These
change management components are seamlessly integrated into the
development environment thereby offering unobtrusive SCM process and
team-specific requirements in the developer’s daily workflow.

2005: Static Code Analysis Demos
The Visual Studio 2005 Team Developer Edition provides advanced
development tools that enable teams to incorporate quality, early and
often throughout the life cycle. The Static Code Analyzer helps
developers detect coding and security related issues earlier in the
development cycle thereby reducing the overall cost of fixing code
defects. In addition, code analysis tools can be used as a part of the
check-in policy for a nightly build process, enabling development
teams to correct defects before code is checked into the source tree.
Performance analysis tools in the Visual Studio Team Developer Edition
enables developers to measure, evaluate, and target
performance-related issues in their code, thereby identifying
performance bottlenecks early on.

Project Management Tools Demo
The Visual Studio 2005 Team System delivers many different project
management tools. The Visual Studio Project Management Tools enable
better planning, scheduling, collaboration, communication, reporting,
and process control. These tools are integrated with the Visual Studio
integrated development environment (IDE), Microsoft Office, Windows
SharePoint Services, and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.

Is Intel Building Copy Protected
Proprietary File Sharing System Into
Chips?
03/30/2005 05:20 PMThis Reuters story is quite confusing, so hopefully more details are
forthcoming that will explain what's really happening. The story
claims that Intel has teamed up with media giant Bertelsmann to
build chips that are "compatible with"
Bertelsmann's new file sharing app. Bertelsmann announced that
application
last week, and it sounds basically like any
other entertainment industry-approved file sharing app. It's not
really about file sharing, but creating a broadcast distribution
mechanism with a tollbooth. So why is Intel getting involved? That's
not clear at all. Does this mean the file sharing system, as
currently developed, doesn't work on Intel chips? That seems highly
unlikely. What would it be working on? Does it mean that Intel is
re-architecting its chips to include this proprietary copy-protected
file sharing system at the
chip level? That also seems highly
unlikely (or, if true, highly disturbing). Intel (and others) make
the chips on which all different kinds of applications can run. They
shouldn't be favoring one type of application or building it in at the
chip level. If anything, this is probably just a marketing
relationship, where Intel may be tossing in a bit of help with
designing the software. However, it still seems like a strange
announcement.
