Most of the time, the life of a wayward freelance geek journalist is fraught with stress, challenges, unpaid invoices. Well, last night wasn't one of those times. I went to the Playboy Mansion to interview Hugh Hefner, and cover the launch of a new Playboy-themed electronic game for Wired News and National Public Radio. In the game, you get to be Hef, doing hefsterly things like -- oh, nailing 18 year old hotties, and managing a booming porn publication empire.

I sat down with Mr. Hefner and his gorgeous companions, and asked him if he felt the game designers had created an accurate virtual depiction of the world in which he lives. "It's pretty good, other than the fact that they gave me this giant Jay Leno chin," he said. There was much butt cleavage in effect. Beautiful women with tromp l'oeil lingerie painted on their perfectly engineered breasts served little snacks off flawlessly polished silver platters (see image at left). Oh, and in case you're wondering -- there is no WiFi inside the grotto, although there is one very heavily used mattress. NPR and Wired News stories coming up.

The Playboy strategy game

The Playboy strategy game 07/15/2004 12:17 AM
So the Playboy the game is out and ready to go. I have to admit, it looks like a slightly more adult version of the Sims to me personally. The game’s makers claim that it is about business, but I can not help wondering what kind they might be referring to. Besides that, if it is like anything from real life, you can rest assure that the Geeks are not included. :o/

It's essentially a ZIP archive with 25 low-resolution pictures—something you could do with your own porn collection in an instant—but it's got the iPod and this fancy graphic here, so it's easy to trick gullible gadget writers into writing about it, without even knowing how silly they look as they are typing the very words in front of them.

Did Google Reveal Too Much In Playboy?

Did Google Reveal Too Much In Playboy? 08/12/2004 10:19 PM
Playboy Magazine has been granted an interview with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of the world's largest and most popular search engine, Google. Slated for release in the September issue of Playboy, the interview is being advertised by Playboy website as "a candid conversation with America's newest billionaires about their oddball company, how they tamed the Web and why their motto is 'Don't be evil.'"

The interview, which was granted a week before they filed their $2.7 billion IPO in late March, has raised speculation that it may not only cause doubt in the general investing public, but may also catch the attention of the Securities & Exchange Commision (SEC). "The SEC has put together the [mandatory] 'quiet period' so the market can't be conditioned, so there shouldn't be anything that circulates other than material fact," said David Menlow, president of IPO Financial Network, a securities research specialist. "Any interview before Google filed should have raised the arm hairs of the company's attorneys," he said.

Other companies, including Webvan and Salesforce.com, have been punished by the SEC for speaking out during their quiet period.

Artist Jason Salavon created a suite of photographs which portray a mean average of every Playboy centerfold foldout for the past four decades, from 1960 through 1999. The series of composite Digital C-prints traces, meta-style, the evolution of sexually explicit popular portraiture.

Salavon "generates [and] reconfigures large collections of communal data to present new perspectives on familiar objects. Using software processes of his own design he produces compositions that are most often exhibited as art objects, such as photographic prints and video installations."

About Google In Playboy

SEC Might Want To Cool Off After Reading
About Google In Playboy
08/12/2004 04:49 PM
Poor Google. They've made such an effort to remain ridiculously quiet during the "quiet period" to avoid any IPO delays, but now it's looking like the thought of being in the same pages as naked women may have gotten to them. The latest issue of Playboy apparently has an interview with Google's co-founders that some believe may make the SEC impose a "cooling off" period (I won't even go there...) before they'll allow the IPO to proceed. This is, of course, the same thing that happened to Salesforce.com, that had a huge NY Times interview with its founder come out days before the expected IPO. The SEC made them push that IPO off a month. Considering the weak state of the IPO market these days, this might not actually be a bad thing, though I'm sure Google was hoping to get the process over with as quickly as possible, to get rid of all this negative press and detailed attention surrounding the IPO. Of course, it does make you wonder... what happens to the auction process? Since the bidding is set to close any minute now, if the IPO gets put off a month, will they let people change their bids? Over the next month, plenty could happen that might make people change how they feel about Google and what they might be willing to pay.

Google speaks out on boobs in Playboy

Google speaks out on boobs in Playboy 08/15/2004 04:06 AM
As Neowin reported earlier this week, Google may have revealed a bit too much in their recent interview with Playboy, which hit news stands Friday. But now Google is saying the magazine article contains numerous misinformations about the company, and that potential investors should not consider it when deciding whether to buy shares in the company.

One of the mis-facts in the article was the statement that Google's Gmail service has 200 times more storage than the company's competitors, however, as Google was quick to point out in their latest Securities and Exchange Commission filings on Friday, its competitors have quickly closed the gap and now offer similar storage sizes to Gmail.

Other incorrect statement was that 65 million people worldwide use Google's search engine, each day. Google contends that is a monthly, not daily, count of domestic visitors to its site.

The article also said it had about 1,000 employees; Google currently has about 2,292 employees.

But, in the end, you have to ask: Who really reads the articles in Playboy anyway?
