Every once in a while, the dance between trends and technology achieves an almost perfect state of synchronicity that changes the way we experience the world. This may be one of those times. Among the trends: five years ago, less than 13 percent of Internet users had a digital-music file on their computer. Now, 70 percent of computer users listen to music on their PCs. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Last year, more than 100 million digital photos were taken. More and more people are using PCs to view videos. By the end of this year, 9.5 million TV tuner cards will have shipped.

09/04/2004 02:40 AM
Customer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives: Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp., Lexmark International Inc. and Ricoh Co. Ltd. on Tuesday detailed new Web services technology designed to make it easier for users to connect devices such as printers, digital cameras and digital music players over a network. The companies at Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) officially announced a Devices Profile for Web services, which describes how devices should use Web services protocols. The announcement builds on WS-Discovery, a Web services specification that Microsoft, Intel, Canon Inc. and BEA Systems Inc. introduced in February.
