Making people look bad

Making people look bad

Making people look bad 05/12/2004 11:27 AM

Wired News has a great story by Mark Baard about the skilled make-up artists who create moulage, incredibly realistic injuries on people for emergency response training and exercises.

"The wounds' realism (deep, bleeding gashes and amputations, oozing blisters and burns) help get the rescuers' adrenaline going, by fostering empathy with the actors who portray disaster victims."

Lauris< /i> is the spirit of the office, irrespective weather those are the numerous jokes for any occasion he has in his luggage or a basket of autumn apples, which he has picked in the morning to remind the colleges about the beauty of the autumn.

Zane has chosen to live in a beautiful world of internal and external beauty, where fragrances and aromas are of importance, however the uppermost value are harmonious relations with the closest people.

We are all fans of mangled English translations from Asia, but there is a certain added beauty in this site for a Latvian law firm, which boasts "professional, fast and qualitative translations" while "int roducing a spirit of poetics in the daily routine of the office".

People Hate Work
04/21/2004 02:09 PM
Some people really do need to get a hobby. A group of small businesses in the UK is apparently angry at an amusement park for coming up with a silly ad campaign that tries to get people to visit IHateWork.co.uk. The Federation of Small Businesses actually believes that this site is making people hate work and skip out for a day to go to the amusement park. Do they actually believe that people who were thrilled with going into work every day suddenly realized, after looking at this site, that they really hate their job and should skip out for a day? Instead of getting all upset about this, perhaps they should have just taken a day off and gone to, I don't know... an amusement park?

08/27/2004 01:47 PM

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft) 02/11/2004 09:36 PM
Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...

Making IM Even More Useful

Making IM Even More Useful 02/19/2004 01:27 AM
IM in the Corporate World

"Today, IBM's IM users average about 3 million messages per day, up from 2.5 million messages per day in 2002. The company has also seen a 4 percent reduction in telephone use, and a reduction in the load on its e-mail servers.

IBM employees communicate primarily with each other, but can also communicate with certain applications. For example, Reuss-Caton says there are several apps, including a dictionary and the corporate directory, to which users can send IM queries and receive responses. For example, if Reuss-Caton queries the database with an employee name, it would return all the employee's details, including presence awareness information telling her whether that individual is online." Making OS X useful

Making OS X useful 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

This article on taming the dock looks like the solution to my frustration with OS X. I arrange my dock in much the same way shown here, with my favorite apps on one side, and the running apps on the other (though, still on the default dock), but I'm constantly hitting the wrong icon when the dock ballons up on mouseover, and I can never remember where exactly I need to point to launch an app.

I'm giving this a go and seeing how it works out. Funny how it looks a little bit like the windows start bar, isn't it?

I will admit it's a little thing, but it irks me. The Boston Globe today has an article by Joanna Weiss about the Clark campaign "blasting" a leaflet from the Dean campaign. In order to build the narrative, the fourth paragraph says that "Clark aids said that the Dean attack was a sign that...the presidential race might be evolving into a two-way battle..." The fifth paragraph then validates this point of view: A New Hampshire tracking poll released this week by American Research Group indicated Clark in second place behind Dean, pulling ahead of ... Kerry... The sixth paragraph continues...

Making the Most of the Blogosphere 12/19/2004 03:36 PM

I finally found my notes from last month's talk at the Internet Librarian conference. It was really Greg's show, and he did a fantastic job talking about how to make the most of the blogosphere from an information foraging perspective. (His Powerpoint presentation is here.) He sent me his slides ahead of time, so I knew he had covered all of the bases. Therefore, I decided to talk about the flip side of the coin, making the most of the blogosphere for your library's blog. Here's the abbreviated version.

Making the News 05/12/2004 08:27 AM
The murder of Nick Berg was horrible. He seems to have been a good-hearted man who went to Iraq because he wanted to help rebuild the country. But why is it the top headline in newspapers around the country? If the Iraqis had murdered a civilian hostage, the media certainly would have paid attention, but I doubt it would have been the lead story. After all, Berg's going missing on April 9 wasn't deemed newsworthy. Had the Iraqis murdered a hostage by beheading him, the savagery of the act would have made the story more newsworthy, especially in comparison...

Making life

Making life 04/28/2004 05:27 PM
The current issue of Scientific American features a mind-blowing article by W. Wayt Gibbs about "synthetic biology," the effort to create designer organisms from the bottom up:
"This nascent field has three major goals: One, learn about life by building it, rather than by tearing it apart. Two, make genetic engineering worthy of its name--a discipline that continuously improves by standardizing its previous creations and recombining them to make new and more sophisticated systems. And three, stretch the boundaries of life and of machines until the two overlap to yield truly programmable organisms. Already TNT-detecting and artemisinin-producing microbes seem within reach. The current prototypes are relatively primitive, but the vision is undeniably grand: think of it as Life, version 2.0."

So what's the deal with this?

QuickTime: Enhance the experience. QuickTime Pro screenshot, with
buttons to buy now or buy 'later'.

I'm sure you've seen it. I get it from QuickTime on Windows, and I get it from QuickTime on my Mac as well. If this was attached to some lousy spyware infested privacy flaunting piece of junk I wouldn't be so surprised, but it's not: it's from Apple, a company who are meant to pride themselves on the usability of their software; software that normally just gets out of the way. So why bug me with this junk? More importantly, why force me to lie about my intentions? I have absolutely no intention of ever upgrading to QuickTime Pro - but every time that blasted window comes up I have to promise to put off my purchasing decision until "Later" in order to proceed.

It annoys me even more because out of all the lousy streaming media formats out there, QuickTime sucks the least. Why spoil the experience with an advert for a product that seems to be made obsolete by Apple's own iMovie anyway?

How Much We Make 03/17/2005 03:12 AM

Google's new ToS: Now you can say how much you make: Gadgetopia made $460 from Google in its best month. We probably average a little less than that. I like to see about $14 a day.

Glenn sez, "Google updated its AdSense TOS and now lets its affiliates discuss what they make.

It spikes quite a bit. The best we ever did was $76 one day. I'm willing to bet most of it was off one click, but which ad? That's the $76 question, as it were.

Thanks to everyone that enables us to make this money. It's not huge, but it at least partially makes up for the time.
