04/12/2005 11:55 AMCanon U.S.A. Inc. announced Tuesday that a free Software Developers
Kit (SDK) will be released this July to allow Mac OS X software
developers to create custom applications to remotely control the Canon
XL2 Mini-DV camcorder. A Windows XP-based SDK is available now. The
SDK allows software to control all of the XL2's functions, such as
switching frame rates, adjusting color gain and managing white balance
controls.

07/14/2004 06:48 AMOn Tuesday, Canon took the wraps off the highly-anticipated successor
its XL1 and XL1S digital camcorders. The Mini-DV
XL2, which will be available in
August for US$4,999, features the ability to record at 60i, 24p or 30p
frame rates, a choice of 4:3 (720 x 480 pixels) or 16:9 (962 x 480)
aspect ratios, a 680,000 pixel progressive scan CCD, an open
architecture that accommodates interchangeable lenses and adapters and
more. In addition, the company introduced a new Professional L-series
20X optical zoom lens that offers a 72mm filter thread, a 6-blade iris
diaphragm, two independent ND filters, a f/1.6 to f/3.5 aperture and
more. It's included with the camera.

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder
09/07/2004 06:47 AM
Sony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has
been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at
this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host
of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture
video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a
projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a
pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most
prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should
be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected
tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Samsung's new camcorder phone
11/06/2003 03:00 AMJust got word of a new camcorder phone from Samsung that can record up
to two hours of video. But it gets even better. The SCH-V410 can also
double as a remote control for a TV or DVD player, take still digital
pictures (with flash), and play music stored on it without having to
open up the phone. It also has a 262,000 color internal LCD screen, an
external OLED screen, and support for video-on-demand services. The
V410 is just for the South Korean market, but Samsung is planning to
make a PCS version of it called the SPH-V4300 which could conceivably
be sold here in the US....

09/07/2004 10:40 AMSony Corp. will begin selling its first high-definition video
camcorder in Japan on Oct. 15, and worldwide by the end of the year,
the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is
compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format,
users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1
camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as
the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it
too expensive for most families initially, the company said.

The first thing that comes to mind when seeing
Sony's DCR-DVD7E is that it looks rather like a Discman, but this is
of course only because it must make room for a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or
DVD+RW to use as recording media. The unit, announced yesterday in
Europe, has a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder on the back, and despite perhaps
looking a bit unimpressive, the lens does a respectable 10x optical
zoom. No idea what it's going to cost when it hits European shelves in
May.

CamCorderInfo has the first review I've seen of the
Sony DCR-PC350, the new pocket-sized camcorder with the 3.31-megapixel
sensor. Sadly, although it's a pretty decent review in general, they
don't talk too much about the still image quality, something I'm sure
many of us would like to know more about, since one of the major
selling points of the DCR-PC350 is its function as a convergence
device. Still, there is some good information in there, including talk
of a "Cinematic Effect" setting that shoots video progressively,
tweaks the color, and drops every fifth frame in an effort to emulate
the look of film. And it works, sort of, at least as an interesting
effect (although they say it ends up looking more like 8mm film than
fancy, Hollywood-quality stuff.)

looks like some interesting cameras will be unveiled at this year's

three-CCD camera that could record at 720p (progressive scan). Good,
but not as crazy as the unconfirmed details of the Panasonic AG-HVX200
DVCPRO HD P2 camcorder, which is being listed as supporting
resolutions up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. If that doesn't make
you start to salivate, let's just say that it's pretty much as good as
it gets, resolution-wise, with current technology. The price will be
high, for sure, but it looks like Panasonic has a contender in the
top-end HD video space to go up against Sony and Canon. (Thanks,

Free copies from Canon copiers
Free copies from Canon copiers
05/29/2004 08:05 AMOn Kuro5hin, a good how-to for hacking Canon copiers at copy-shops to
give you free copies -- and to get them to do fun stuff.
The copy machines you are using are configured in a certain way to use
a coin operated slot, key card, or service key (such as those that
Kinkos has). Through an interesting "feature" in the firmware, if the
copy machine is configured to accept coins or keys, and no machine is
hooked up for this, it will give copies for free. Unfortunately, this
isn't as helpful as it sounds; anyone with a remedial amount of
intelligence who wants to get free copies will try unplugging the
instrument first and foremost. As such, it is often impossible without
a service key to unplug the apparatus.
Fortunately, there is a work-around. Go into "Service Mode" (using
star-2 and 8-star), and push the "Option" tab. Underneath it, push
"Acc". A new menu will pop up. Hit the "Coin" button, and enter "0" on
the keypad. Once you are done, hit "Enter" or "Apply" (you MUST do
this after you change any field; otherwise it will reset the next
button you push). Once you are done, hit reset until you are on the
main screen. Voila - free copies!
