Periodical Cicada

Robert Scoble: The blogosphere is a passion chamber.  This comes as the echos of Scoble's piece on persuasion die down. I'll go on record as being a skeptic on the persuasion piece.  The secret of acting is sincerity. Once you have learnt to fake that, you're made.  'nuff said. Passion comes closer to the mark for me.  It perfectly captures the William Hung aspect of blogging. When I was a nine year old boy in the suburbs of Washington DC, it was a joy to be invaded by hoards of cicadas.  They were totally scary looking yet completely harmless.  Seventeen years later, the experience with my wife was completely different.  Next month, they will be back.  This creates a connection between different points in my life.  A personal connection. So... let's all converge on this site and experience vicariously the simple joy of a person who is clearly passionate about cicadas.

Wireless Relief in Tsunami-Torn Regions

Wireless Relief in Tsunami-Torn Regions 12/29/2004 09:52 AM
Mike Outmesguine is organizing Post-Tsunami Reconnect: The effort will try to get wireless equipment and expertise to areas of need in the tsunami disaster. Information can be a powerful tool in organizing resources in the midst of chaos. Without a telecom or data infrastructure, the distribution of food, clean water, and medical help could be directed to places that don't need them. Best of luck on this effort. Direct donations of aid, by the way, are being collected by various groups, including Oxfam and the Red Cross. Amazon.com has devoted its home page to the Red Cross's efforts, and has helped them raise over $1.2 million so far. (The International Committee of the Red Cross's site is down at the moment, apparently overwhelmed by traffic.)...

The basic format of the weblog medium has been pretty much set for more than 5 years now, and it's enough time that we can probably make some safe observations about bloggers' behavior. Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?

Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle? 07/21/2004 08:22 PM
Sometimes it's difficult to break out of habits. While newspapers have a clear reason for having a drop-dead deadline for submitting articles, and a once-a-day publishing schedule, the web world offers them plenty of flexibility in when they publish... which they seem to have promptly ignored. E-Media Tidbits notes a new study showing many online newspapers stick to a once-a-day publishing schedule. It's not that surprising that they do this. It fits within their existing processes, and since many are reusing print copy anyway, it makes some amount of sense. Still, you would expect them to start to realize they can publish on a less strict schedule. It appears some newspapers have made an effort to stay more regularly updated, but many simply don't bother at all. Of course, in doing so, they risk losing readers to other sites that are more timely.
