Microsoft's Anti-Virus Strategy Keeps
Users Guessing
06/21/2004 10:40 AM
One year after it surprised rivals and partners by jumping into the anti-virus market, Microsoft Corp. still has no clear AV strategy, and users are still hanging on to the promise of integrated Windows protection. The company's sluggish AV development is a far cry from the plans Microsoft trumpeted when it acquired the Romanian company GeCAD Software Srl. last June. At the time, officials in Redmond, Wash., said they planned to use GeCAD's technology to develop new products and enhance the security protections in Windows. The news enticed some users but worried others. And it was especially disturbing to anti-virus vendors such as Computer Associates International Inc., Symantec Corp. and Network Associates Inc. The vendors, all major Microsoft partners, along with some enterprise security managers, were concerned that building AV into Windows would force users to accept the company's solution and abandon third-party tools.

12/30/2004 02:26 PM
As it preps two Windows server updates for 2005, Microsoft is struggling to find the right balance between making--and delivering on--promises made to customers during their Software Assurance contract periods. In the past six months, Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., has found itself in the awkward position of acknowledging that the long-promised WinFS next-generation file system would have to be cut from the Longhorn upgrade of Windows to guarantee its on-time delivery in 2006.

More recently, Microsoft executives confessed that two key features, Network Access Protection and integrated Digital Rights Management Services, which were supposed to appear in its interim R2 Windows Server 2003 update, will not make it into the 2005 server update after all.

iPod local syncing... 12/12/2003 06:37 PM

So imagine that you're coming home from work with your iPod and you're listening to a song. Let's say that you're listening to Don't be Light by Air, because it's an extremely good song. Now let's imagine that your iPod has bluetooth capabilities (or something similar) and that you've already paired it with your home computer (that - of course - you have hooked up to your stereo).

Now for the vast majority of people, everything that's on their iPod is also on their computer. And by that I don't just mean the songs themselves, but also any of the potential playlists they might be listening to. So here's my thing. You're coming up to your front door, you pull the iPod from your pocket, you do the spinning thing until your menu is pointing to sync and then as you are about to enter your house your local copy of iTunes powers up, selects the same song that you're currently listening to, skips forward to the same moment in the track and fades the volume up (at the same time as your iPod gradually fades the volume down) so you can seemlessly remove your headphones without spoiling your auditory experience. Wouldn't that be neat?!

Extending it still further, using the same sync option, you could turn the whole iPod into a local remote control. But that's probably less interesting. Well, less interesting to me, anyway.
