W32/Zafi.b@MM : A new worm to watch for, spreads itself via email and peer to peer networks. It has it’s own SMTP engine and scans local files for email addresses. It uses the TLD (top level domain) to determine which language to send itself in. The following registry key is created by the worm: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\_Hazafibb W32/Sober.gen@MM: Does not send itself, it uses infected machines to send political SPAM in German. The worm creates the following file: winhlpx32ll.exe As always please keep your anti-virus files up to date. If you believe you have launched either of these worms clean your system immeditely with the latest anti-virus signatures.

Stat us Notification is a web application pattern from Ian Bickling that uses sessions to solve the problem of how to display simple status messages without displaying whole pages with just a one line message on them or passing a message in a URL. My current project could certainly benefit from this.

Microsoft Creates Anti-Virus Bounty To
Help Track Down Virus Writers
11/05/2003 10:59 AM
What do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on viruses, so instead, they're setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses. The rewards will be given out in $250,000 wads of cash from Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round up an anti-virus posse?

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At
Teens

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At
Teens
08/17/2004 05:02 PM
This is certainly not the first time a company has tried this (though, the article suggests otherwise), but a new computer is about to hit the market which is specifically targeted at teenagers -- both at the hardware and software level. The accessories and case are designed to be stylish, the hard drive is designed to hold a lot of music, and the software is designed to appeal to busy multi-tasking kids. It also has close integration with a mobile phone (if you happen to be a Sprint customer) and an MP3 player/digital storage keychain device. It looks like the company has at least done a bit more work than past attempts to try to create a more complete package, and they did obviously use a lot of teens in helping to design the system. However, marketing to teens is notoriously difficult -- and the fact that they're signing up teens as commission-based sales people may not go over too well with some. Besides, if the computer comes off as being even the slightest bit uncool (or targeted at kids too young or likely to become obsolete too quickly, etc.) the whole idea could die a quick death. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the finished product (due out this fall), but the fact that it's a desktop machine may be problematic as well. These days, kids tend to identify themselves with their mobile phones, and the freedom that presents, and may be less interested in some desktop stuck back in their room and coated in fuzzy pink fur. Even if kids to prefer to stay in their room at home, having something that's portable is where the real bragging power comes in.
