Accidents Happen 05/12/2004 09:43 AM

Two clicks from iTunes' built-in help fixed the problem in no time flat, along as a well-deserved boost of self-confidence that's she's in control of the computer, not the other way around. By Peter Cohen, Macworld (via MyAppleMenu)

Dan Bricklin on accidents

Dan Bricklin on accidents 09/07/2004 08:01 PM
Dan has written a thoughtful essay that tries to help us learn from accidents and extreme, intentional accidents (= terrorism). He looks at Charles Perrow's Normal Accidents and the 9/11 Commission Report (which he has excerpted helpfully here). Dan draws too many insights to summarize, but the need for providing flexible, two-way communication systems so that non-officials can act effectively leaps out at me. (By coincidence, Dewayne Hendricks today talked about how a couple of strategically positioned repeaters were able to provide a forest fire command center with wifi communications access.)...

No Accidents in Over 30,000 Years! 04/04/2005 06:28 PM
Pro-forma nuclear safety is harder than ever to sell. There's ass-kissing to the sci-fi community (.pdf, download it), the instructional video (warning, boring .wmv, > 12 mins long). But... The design lifetimes of Yucca Mountain and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant won't protect future generations from groundwater absorbing transuranic waste (Pu239 and like toxins, deadly when ingested for 240,000 years). Do you have this stuff in your back yard today, and how will it get there safely? On top of that, the capacity problem, which looks intractable as long as we keep relicensing plants. If I didn't know better, I assume the only way the government could succeed in getting this done would be to hoodwink us.

Hybird Auto Accidents

Hybird Auto Accidents 05/04/2004 03:13 PM

Rescuers prep for hybrid car accidents: Some interesting questions here. Are electric motors more dangerous that internal combustion engines in the event of an accident? What happens if someone drives one into a lake? Will anyone attempting to rescue the occupants get shocked?

Hybrids draw power from two sources, typically a gas or diesel engine combined with an electric motor. The battery powering the electric motor carries as much as 500 volts, more than 40 times the strength of a standard battery.

That worries those who must cut into cars to rescue people inside. "If you can't shut it down, you don't know where the high voltage is," said David Dalrymple, an emergency medical technician...

Vast Majority Of Popup Click Throughs
Are Accidents

Vast Majority Of Popup Click Throughs
Are Accidents
07/13/2004 10:30 PM
For years, anyone with a bit of common sense has known that pop-up ads were bad for business. They piss people off and studies have even shown that they're bad for business generating more negative feelings for the brand than positive responses. The problem, still, was that advertisers who used them still swore by them, pointing to the much higher clickthrough rates than other types of ads. Advertisers used this stat to prove that, for as much as popups pissed people off and brought them ill-will, they still "worked." Well, now it's time to disprove that as well. A new study has shown that approximately 90% of popup clickthroughs are accidental, caused by people trying to shut down the damn windows so they can get on with their surfing. This quote says it all: "Achieving an over-inflated click-through rate might help brands to justify their spend, but they are only deceiving themselves. The brand, which we used in our research study, is not only wasting up to 90% of its budget by paying for unintentional click-throughs, it is also frustrating and deceiving users."

Spammers have managed to pollute my bayesian filters. Dammit. And not in a safe way. Just because, I decided to take a look at my spam folder. Normally I don't, I just unconditionally delete the damn thing. Today... well, I figured I'd look. Couldn't hurt, right? Only 10K messages, about 91M of crud, and it's not like there are words I've never seen in it. Unfortunately stuff in there did upset me. Not because it was foul, obscene, tasteless, or lacking in any sort of aesthetic. Nope, it's because there was mail I recognized. For some reason the autolearning that...

(ENT2.0 mod RSS1.0) = 0.
Time for ENT 2.0?. It's very interesting to read Danny's toughts about ENT and RSS 1.0. Maybe it's time for a new release of the ENT specs, RSS 1.0 compatible. Oh... and what about Atom?
[Paolo Valdemarin: Paolo's Weblog]

I've certainly thought about things which, with the benefit of hindsight, I would have done differently.  I was never comfortable with having the topic name as the text content of the <topic> element and I've no idea why I did it, there are other bugbears in there too.

I'd also like to give more thought as to how ENT feeds can be supported by topic map resources in real applications.  At the moment we don't publish XTM or XFML maps out of K-Collector but we could (I used to publish XFML from liveTopics but those files got big!)

Lastly I would really like to make a push for ENT support in other applications.  It seems a shame to me that, more than a year on, no other applications seem to have picked up on the benefits topic based aggregation offer to users.
[Curiouser and curiouser!]

Right on to Paolo and Matt!

Here we go!

I highly endorse using ENT as a way of us all standardizing on attaching keywords to RSS feeds.  On both sides.

Now that I have a phone that takes some impressive photos (This shot is probably the best example I've seen for color, depth, and light that the little cam can capture), I really wish iPhoto could manage my images instead of my preview-free bluetooth file browser.

I bet it'd be trivial for Apple to enable connections via Bluetooth (to your paired devices) to import photos.

The Difference Between What You Want To
Happen And What's Happening

The Difference Between What You Want To
Happen And What's Happening
12/29/2003 01:44 PM
We've writt en about Magnatunes and the Creative Commons a few times before, so yet another article on Magnatunes and the Creative Commons isn't all that interesting. However, this one makes a very good point which is worth repeating. The article asks, if people can get their music for free, why would they bother paying for CDs. The response, which Magnatunes founder basically tells them, is that they're asking the wrong question. People are already downloading music for free, and thus, the recording industry needs to figure out a way to adjust to that reality. The original question (what happens if people can get their music for free?) is like asking "but, what happens to buggy makers when automobiles are around?" The answer seems obvious to everyone, except those involved in the recording industry: they adapt or die. The recording industry is so focused on what they want to happen, that they've missed what's actually happening. The article also suggests that, so far, Magnatunes is doing quite well, and has the potential to be a viable longterm business - based on the idea of giving away music as a promotional good.
