piece of technology --
its antenna. For years, though, improvements have been minor. Lately,
a movement has

MOBS is a building system a la autoconf, but a lot
easier for both developers and users. It's very
easy to use and tune, even for medium-sized
projects. If you want your project to be
configurable and accept most "./configure" options
but without the hassle and burden autoconf and
friends impose, this is for you. It has good
documentation and a low steep learning curve, and
even has a bit of application framework in order
to ease development.

Changes:
Due to a design flaw, "Makefile" must be called
"Makefile.in" now. This prevents a nasty situation
where the end user could do "make" before
configuring the project with "0".

Is Intel Building Copy Protected
Proprietary File Sharing System Into
Chips?
03/30/2005 05:20 PMThis Reuters story is quite confusing, so hopefully more details are
forthcoming that will explain what's really happening. The story
claims that Intel has teamed up with media giant Bertelsmann to
build chips that are "compatible with"
Bertelsmann's new file sharing app. Bertelsmann announced that
application
last week, and it sounds basically like any
other entertainment industry-approved file sharing app. It's not
really about file sharing, but creating a broadcast distribution
mechanism with a tollbooth. So why is Intel getting involved? That's
not clear at all. Does this mean the file sharing system, as
currently developed, doesn't work on Intel chips? That seems highly
unlikely. What would it be working on? Does it mean that Intel is
re-architecting its chips to include this proprietary copy-protected
file sharing system at the
chip level? That also seems highly
unlikely (or, if true, highly disturbing). Intel (and others) make
the chips on which all different kinds of applications can run. They
shouldn't be favoring one type of application or building it in at the
chip level. If anything, this is probably just a marketing
relationship, where Intel may be tossing in a bit of help with
designing the software. However, it still seems like a strange
announcement.

07/22/2004 02:41 AMAP - Republicans initially dismissed "Fahrenheit 9/11" as a cinematic
screed that would play mostly to inveterate Bush bashers. Four weeks
and $94 million later, the film is still pulling in moviegoers at
2,000 theaters around the country, making Republicans nervous as it
settles into the American mainstream.

Game: Nervous Breakdown
06/05/2005 11:48 PMJune 2, 2005 - Mac Games and More has published another free game
for Mac OS X. The game is called, “Nervous Breakdown,” a brick
wall game where a player uses a ball to break down a wall that is
progressively growing and moving downward. The ball begins slowly and
as the game continues, it increases in speed, and the wall increases
in size. Nervous Breakdown breaks away from others of its kind such
that during game play the gamer has only one life and has only one
chance to play the level without dropping the ball.

JVC TH-SW5 Home Theater System with
Wireless Rears
08/03/2004 09:03 AM
JVC has a new
set of home theater systems out in Japan that transmit sound to the
read speakers wireless via radio; a radio that, unfortunately,
broadcasts on the 2.4GHz spectrum -- the same frequency as Wi-Fi. The
TH-SW5 otherwise looks like a solid system, but perhaps another model
at 5GHz or 900MHz would be optimal. Or maybe -- stay with me --
user selectable frequency. There aren't plans to release it
here, though, to my knowledge, but I'd hate to be the Japanese
consumer who has to choose between their network and their
speakers.
My dream wireless speakers receive audio and power through a
fixed microwave beam. If you couldn't navigate through the matrix of
flesh-searing invisible conduits, you wouldn't be worthy to
watch the extended edition of Groundhog Day.

Wireless Management Of A Computer
System: Patented
09/03/2004 02:40 PM
The patent system is just getting out of control. The latest is that
a company named Expand Beyond has
paten
ted a system for wireless monitoring and management of computer
systems. The patent (
6,772,169) sounds incredibly broad,
covering any systems where someone is using a portable device with a
wireless connection to monitor computer systems. Why is this
patentable? The big difference here is the "wireless" aspect -- which
isn't a new technology. All they're doing is taking something that
existed over a wired network before and making it wireless. To say
that's "non-obvious" (as a patent must be) is a joke.

Obviously
inspired by the accurate per-blow scoring of games like Tekken
and Virtua Fighter, scientists at PARC, Stanford, and Impact
Measurement are testing a wearable system that lets martial arts
judges decent the force of a hit. By stringing up a series of wireless
piezoelectric pressure sensors in the hogu armor that protects the
combatants, the system can display the exact force of the blows on the
judges' wireless handsets. Since tae kwon do fighters are judged not
just for the accuracy of their kicks but also for the force behind
them, the system can be much more fair than trying to determine which
'Oof!' was the loudest.
