Karl Rove: Apologize, resign, or both
06/24/2005 09:59 PMAs a liberal, I'm not insulted by Karl Rove's remark that "liberals
saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments
and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." He's just
demagoging based on a seed of truth: I do want to understand our
attackers (because it's stupid in n dimensions not to understand the
people you're fighting) and I do want a nuanced, well-thought-out
response that will actually make my children safer, rather than the
kneejerk Bomb Someone strategery we got from Bush and Rove. So, fine,
politicians exaggerate the positions they don't like and even...

US torturers made screensavers out of
atrocity photos
05/08/2004 02:05 AMSalon's reporter in Iraq interviewed an Al Jazeera cameraman, a
civilian who was taken prisoner by the US forces and brutally
tortured.
"I first knew that they were taking pictures when I saw that one of
the computers had a picture of some prisoners as its desktop
background. One of the prisoners had a black hood over his head and he
was covered in cold water. I personally witnessed this event take
place. The man was screaming, "I'm innocent!" until he got sick and
his body got swollen from all the punishment," al Baz said. Cold
water, solitary confinement, swollen bodies and constant psychological
abuse are recurring images for the Al-Jazeera cameraman, who also
credits his tormentors with ingenuity. "They had all different kinds
of punishments and they changed them all the time. I begged them to
interrogate me again so they would know that I was innocent, but they
said no, that's it. All we know is that you're staying here."

I never thought that I'd agree with Karl
Rove about anything, but I do today
05/06/2004 06:06 AMBefore Bush launched his war on Iraq, I argued about the folly of a
predominantly Christian nation trying to impose a Richard "Prince of
Darkness" Perle-Ahmed Chalabi type of democracy on Iraq with bayonets
and bombs. I also argued that the logic of American troops in Iraq, at
best estranged fron Iraqis by barriers of religion, culture and
language, would soon cause American troops to be seen as occupiers,
and would cause American troops to act as occupying armies always act
in a strange land. My experience of living in an Arab country for two
years convinced me that the United States was headed for disaster. But
I confess, I never imagined this: Some outraged member of the military
has leaked some more photos of Iraqis being abused and tortured by
American soldiers to the Washington Post, and the Washington Post is
leading, on their website at least, with this (cropped) photo of a
naked Iraqi man on a dog leash being held by a female American
soldier. These pictures show at least a minimal amount of knowledge of
Arab culture, because if one was seeking to humiliate an Arab man,
presumably a citizen of the country we claim we are liberating, it
would be hard to do more. Each and every item visible in this picture
would contribute to that humiliation. Buried in a stupid NYT story
about a stupid inside-the-Beltway-only Washington game about Bush
pretending to spank Rumsfeld for having been caught abusing Arabs was
a second-hand quote by Bush's brain, Karl Rove, who: told one Bush
adviser that he believes that it will take a generation for the United
States to live this scandal down in the Arab world Well, I finally
agree with Karl Rove about something. It will take decades, if not a
century, to undo the damage in the Arab world that Bush has done in 3
years. And Americans will pay a heavy price in the meantime. Tell me
again how Bush's war on Iraq has helped the so-called "War on
Terrorism?" At this point, we will be lucky if the leaders of all the
Arab countries, including all our former allies, don't publically
encourage their young men to take revenge on America for these
abominations. Bush's war on Iraq has been a disaster, on a practical
as well as moral front. As I said earlier this week, we are continuing
to aid...

Music licensing and American Idol
Music licensing and American Idol
05/26/2004 03:25 PMThe New York Times published an article about
how the music industry influences song choice on American Idol
today. I've long suspected that contestant song choice was limited to
what the show could afford to pay in licensing costs ahead of time,
since the choices of songs to cover seem limited. A producer of the
show is quoted heavily stating that many songs are off-limits due to
audience preferences and style, but does let slip that any songs by
Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Shania Twain are completely
off-limits to the show. That's disappointing, since MJ and the Beatles
are cultural icons, both selling one of the top ten music albums of
all time.
Historically, there's always been some legal leeway to allow for
cover songs, though as
this musician found out, the process can be a lengthy one to get
the rights to everything you want to record.

American Idol Too Popular For The Phone
System?
05/17/2004 03:04 AM
It appears that Fox is feeling the impact of the "Idol Voting Effect."
While perhaps not as well known in techie circles as the "Slashdot
Effect" of taking down a website when Slashdot points to you, Fox is
trying to talk its way around reports that the company's phone lines
couldn
't handle the rush of phone calls from folks looking to vote in the
latest American Idol TV show. Apparently the problem was caused
by jammed local phone lines, rather than long distance phone lines.
Also, it sounds like the way around the problem was to just use text
messaging - since those appeared to go through without a problem.
Either way, when you know you have such a popular event coming up, you
would think that the show would make an extra effort to make sure such
problems wouldn't occur or come up with simple workarounds in case
they do.

Hacking Idol
Hacking Idol
05/17/2004 02:54 PMIt's great to finally hear someone talk about phone phreaking and
other attempts to subvert American Idol voting. Just
last week I was trolling the web looking for web-to-SMS gateways to
see if one could write a bot to vote-spam an American Idol contestant.
To hear that folks are using automated dialers to shut out voters
seems even more obvious. They should probably just make the voting a
900 number, at say, 50 cents a vote, in order to limit hackery but
people could still simply jam the lines with DoS attacks using
dialers.
