Narratologists versus Ludologists:
battle of the games-academics
Narratologists versus Ludologists:
battle of the games-academics
09/10/2004 02:53 PM
Cory Doctorow:
Over on Terra Nova, academic Timothy Burke has posted a fascinating
state-of-the-nation report on the fight between "narratologists" (who
argue that the value of games is best understood by treating them as
stories) and "ludologists" (who argue that the value is best
understoof by analyzing games as a form of play). This is a new
discipline a-borning, and its paradigm is being framed before our
eyes:
In the context of games criticism, this tendency might lead to a
narratologist placing enormous interpretative weight on the fact that
most first-person shooters are structured by conflicts between the
player’s avatar and small groups of three to six enemies, seeing
this as a narrative choice that has authorial intent behind it, that
can be related to various similar kinds of narratives in other media
(e.g., the ur-narrative of Die Hard or Rambo or James Bond films, the
narrative pacing of action films where the uber-masculine hero crushes
small packs of slightly-less-manly bad guys). The problem is that the
narratological kinship between Die Hard and first-person-shooters is a
much more complicated matter in its actual historical evolution. If
anything, when first-person-shooters first appeared with
narratological structure that resembled the narrative of action films,
to some extent that content was a superficial add-on rather than a
deep structure of gameplay, a kind of narratological “skin”. The
original Doom is a very good example of this pattern. The deep
structure of the game (single player avatar versus distributed
clusters of enemies) was, before anything else, a technical
requirement dictated by the number of enemies it was then possible to
have on the screen. This continues to be the case even though
computers have much more processing power because the enemies have
become much more graphically demanding.

12/11/2003 01:38 AMIt really wasn't that long ago that the various games found on mobile
phones were the equivalent of the video games from two decades ago.
However, it appears that
m
obile phone video games have gotten up to speed much, much faster.
Part of this is because established game brands have jumped in
headfirst, realizing that there's a real market here. Now, people are
expecting that (ignoring the N-Gage) we'll start to see more mobile
phones that are optimized for gaming. The more interesting aspect
will be watching whether or not connected gaming takes off as well.

Google says: Page customization-- Users may customize the Google News
front page with news sections of their choosing. They can select from
9 available languages and 22 local editions of Google News from around
the globe, enabling users to view Google News in a customized global,
multilingual format. For example, a user living in London who speaks
both English and Japanese may choose to view Health news from the UK
and World news in Japanese. Add custom sections-- Users may create
their own personal section for the Google News front page by
specifying keywords, preferred language, and/or categories from where
to draw the stories. For example, users interested in reading news
about Google may select [google] as a keyword in the Technology
category. Newly created sections will also appear in users left
navigation bar. Section rearrangement-- Users may rearrange the
sections of the front page theyd like to view. For example, if theyd
rather read Entertainment news before Business news, they may place
the Entertainment section toward the top of their customized front
page. Number of headlines by section selection-- Users may easily
modify the number of headlines displayed per news section. (Changing
the number of stories in a section will change the alignment of
sections on the page.) Show headlines only-- Users may also select to
view headlines only, without displaying the first sentence of a story

this feature may be helpful for users with non-broadband or slower
