Identity Using Web Services
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

Broadcom Alleges Atheros Chips Degrade
Adjacent Networks
11/14/2003 08:43 PM
Broadcom says that Atheros's 108 Mbps mode in its Super G featureset found in NetGear and D-Link devices significantly degrades nearby network performance across the entire 2.4 GHz band: Associate Editor Nancy Gohring and I filed this breaking news for PC World's online news site today. The allegations by Broadcom could shake the consumer industry slightly. We wrote this story now because Broadcom plans to demonstrate their findings at Comdex next week, and we felt this was the right time to provide the context we'd be been researching all week for the story. If the methodology Broadcom used to conduct the tests is reproducible -- they claim these tests show that Atheros's products have a large negative impact on 802.11b and 802.11g networks -- then D-Link, NetGear, and Atheros will need to issue firmware upgrades, disable the mode, or recall equipment. Equally problematic: if Broadcom's claims are not reproducible or their testing methods and assumptions are faulty, they've gone a long distance out of their way to make themselves look unreasonable. You might wonder why Nancy and I filed for PC World instead of breaking this news directly at this site. When Broadcom first briefed me on this problem on Monday of this week, I turned to the PC World editor who had recently assembled an exhaustive coverage section on 802.11g access points and their configuration and compatibility. That set of articles showed that many current 802.11g devices still have bugs to be worked out. In discussions with the reviews editor and the online news editor at PC World, we talked about how best this story could be written without being either speculative or sensationalist. Their advice and willingness to act as touchstones in our reporting made it clear that we should work with them on the story. They vetted this through their network experts as well to confirm that the technical details were right. I had and have a lot of trepidation about this story. We don't want to seem naive and give credence to a claim that's scientifically provable and which I've seen the results of but not the process until we know that it's reproducible. But given that this is about to go prime time, as it were, we all felt it was the right point to provide as much background as possible to root Broadcom's claims and Atheros's rebuttal in reality....

Hosted Services and Identity Networks

Hosted Services and Identity Networks 01/07/2004 02:32 PM

An interesting area that could benefit from identity federation technology is the world of hosted applications.  Increasingly, companies are relying on outsourced applications to support their business, including in areas such as CRM, HR, Supply-Chain management, etc.  Corporations want to ensure that when their employees access these remote applications, that they are simply using their local security credentials (e.g. their Windows or LDAP Network login) rather than having to create and self-manage dozens or more remote Web applications.  Right now, enterprises are exposed to a significant risk of identity theft and fraud -- for example, if an employee leaves a company (or is asked to leave, as is more common these days), the company has no way to de-provision or revoke the credentials from all of the external hosted applications that the employee uses from their Work computer.

This is just one of many drivers and forms of identity networks made possible by protocols such as Liberty, SAML and WS-Federation.

PingID has put together a nice summary of the various Topologies of Identity Federation.

The old year has passed and a new one has dawned. Yet, we can never really discard the old year (as we can throw away the calendar) because its legacy lives on into the New Year. Still, each new year brings hope for a better life and to mark this hope we make New Year's resolutions - vows to better ourselves in some way. Last January, I offered three possible resolutions for the identity management industry - let's take a look at how well they were kept.

Broadcom Pushes Wi-Fi Security with a
Single Button

Broadcom Pushes Wi-Fi Security with a
Single Button
01/05/2005 10:18 PM
Broadcom announced a one-button WPA security system for home networks and consumer electronics: The new revision of Broadcom's system to make it easier to secure home networks without entering settings is called SecureEasySetup (formerly SecureEZSetup), and is backed initially by Linksys and HP in a press release; Buffalo Technologies separately confirmed that they will also support the system through firmware upgrades. SecureEasySetup in its simplest form requires manufacturers of Wi-Fi equipment to put an external button on their devices. Pressing such a button on an access point or gateway and then, within a short interval, on a piece of equipment like a Wi-Fi PC Card, a Wi-Fi-equipped DVD/media player, or Voice over IP (VoIP) Wi-Fi phone causes a secure connection to be created between the device and the Wi-Fi router. A WPA Personal key is then provided to the device, enabling it to get on the network with no manual configuration. This one-button approach can be simulated through client software as well for older devices or devices that don't have the form factor for an external button. The initial pass on this system last year was welcome but a bit wonky and didn't catch on due to too many manual parts of the process. Broadcom took a page from Buffalo's AirStation One-touch Secure System (AOSS) and took it down to the fewest necessary steps--and no typing. "All you need to do is press a button on a router, then press a button on the client and then you're done," said Jeff Abramowitz, the senior director of marketing for Broadcom's home and wireless networking business unit. This new system is designed to help people connect all kinds of devices, he said, not just wireless LAN equipment. He noted that while today most home use involves computers and a gateway, manufacturers are rapidly releasing devices that rely on Wi-Fi as a means, such as Wi-Fi in televisions sets, automotive entertainment systems, and VoIP phones. There's no easy way to enable security with many of these categories of devices. Printers, particularly, are a problem to bring onto a secured network as more and more come with Wi-Fi built in or available through a dock or adapter. Web-based configuration tools for printers and even access points are beyond the level at which most consumers want to interact with their equipment. Abramowitz said that although their announcement today at the Consumer Electronics Show was made...
