.NET 2.0 woes
.NET 2.0 woes
07/06/2004 01:55 AMAccording to this Weblog, there are concerns that installing the .NET
2.0 framework may have allegedly “broken” his ASP.NET
mobile applications. While I have yet to substantiate this claim, it
is only fair to warn others to be careful in case they are also
considering the upgrade.
Congestion Woes
Congestion Woes
10/29/2003 01:39 PMConcerns around the effects that too many users may have on Wi-Fi
networks seems to be the hot topic these days: This writer suggests a
somewhat unclear idea revolving around a "congestion charge" and
technology that will turn off clients that aren't being used. I just
don't think congestion is going to be that huge of a problem. It will
be in certain circumstances like at trade shows and possibly on a busy
street where every shop offers Wi-Fi. But otherwise I just don't
expect it to be debilitating....

Pinging woes
01/23/2004 02:25 PMWhenever I post an entry to this site, a ping is (supposedly) sent to
four different places (weblogs.com, Technorati, blo.gs, and Blog
Chatter) that says, "hey, I've updated my site". That way, people can
use these services to stop by only when there's something new to read.
The problem is that these services have not been working correctly
lately. According to my MT activity log, weblogs.com times out more

Woes of Big Holidays
Woes of Big Holidays
12/27/2004 08:25 AM
Egad. One down, one more to go. I hate big holidays
because the big ones
are actually three in one: Blah Eve, Blah itself, and After-Blah
Sales Day.
On Blah Eve, my wife expects me to pay attention to her. That
means lots of
kisses and lip service. I wonder if the word Eve being the
name of the first
gal had something to do with this.
On the Blah Day, my wife expects me to pay attention to the
family. In modern
terms, this means doing far more TV watching than my usual 30
minutes a day.
The worst part is that TV programming really sucks on such
days. Radio is even
worse.
On the After-Blah Sales Day, my wife expects me to be
invisible. Actually she
is the one that does the disappearing act from dawn til dusk.
If I happen to
get up too early, I get the deathray look. This morning, I
got up just as she
was putting on her shoes to go out shopping. Oops.

04/16/2004 11:38 AMOpinion: Universal DVD recorders are great in concept. You no
longer have to worry about whether you use DVD-R/-RW or DVD+R/+RW. But
you do have to worry about which brand and where it's made. What's
worse is that some are finicky about CD-RW media. This is supposed to
be easier?

04/09/2004 04:03 PMMy beloved Treo 600 is suddenly on the fritz. It makes and
receives calls, but whenever I turn it off and on, it locks in the

and hard resets. This is something serious. Time to call
the equipment replacement program, which fortunately I signed up
for.

More Microsoft Server Woes
More Microsoft Server Woes
03/19/2005 02:22 AMFollowing last year's European
Commission’s antitrust ruling against them,
Microsoft agreed to create a server interoperability licence that
would allow rival makers of server software to write applications that
can "achieve full interoperability" with Windows client and server
operating systems on "reasonable and non-discriminatory terms". Well
it seems the EC does not think that Microsoft has lived up to
it’s end of the bargain. The European Commission has
rejected Microsoft's proposed server interoperability licence, saying
that it contained a number of serious flaws including unjustifiably
high royalty fees and the exclusion of open source vendors.
From ZDnet UK, “A spokesman for the antitrust
commissioner told ZDNet UK on Friday that after consulting the
industry the EC has decided the licence is unsatisfactory. If
Microsoft is unable to resolve these issues it could be fined very
heavily by the Commission.
"In light of the results of the market
testing the Commission has strong doubts about Microsoft's compliance
with the interoperability remedy," said the spokesman. "Microsoft now
has the opportunity to get back to us to explain their point of view
and if we're still not happy we can adopt a decision fining them 5
percent of their global turnover each day that they are not compliant.
Of course we hope it won't come to that."

WSJ Exposes Wi-Fi Range Woes
03/06/2004 01:49 AMWall Street Journal talks to home Wi-Fi users who can't seem to get
the range they need even on small homes: It's a growing problem, and
well explored in this article, that home users are finding that
Wi-Fi's limited range can't cover an entire ranch-style home, much
less a big apartment--or one with thick walls. The article mentions
several solutions, all of which involve additional access points or
devices that promise more range. It misses just one of my favorite
solutions: HomePlug. HomePlug lets you run 14 Mbps over home
electrical wiring, and even has a Wi-Fi access point version to extend
a network into areas that a signal otherwise wouldn't reach....
