eBay's Business Model Patent Mess

eBay's Business Model Patent Mess

In 2002, someone who claimed he came up with the idea for online auctions and patented it before eBay existed sued the company for patent infringement. As we pointed out at the time, this was exactly what patents were not supposed to do. Here's a case where different people came up with similar ideas. One actually did something with it and built a real company, while the other didn't do anything with it at all, other than run to the patent office. Yet, the company that did something gets sued. That discourages companies from actually innovating. The companies that really do something open themselves up to lawsuits. While a court later tossed out the online auction patent for being too vague, they did award the guy nearly $30 million for his patent on "direct buying" online (yes, he actually patented that). Both sides appealed, and the court has found that, not only did eBay violate the direct buy patent, but it's bringing back the online auction patent as well, saying a lower court needs to check that out again.

Microsoft Debuts New Hosted Messaging

Microsoft Debuts New Hosted Messaging
And Collaboration Service
02/01/2005 09:56 PM
Hoping to make its small and medium-size customers at least feel a little bigger Microsoft has debuted its Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.0, what company officials are calling their next generation of hosted services. The new services, which leverage the company's Solution for Hosted Exchange 2003, has added new support for hosted versions of Office Live Communications Server 2005 as well as Windows SharePoint Services. This is designed to be a more cost effective approach for SMBs through access to more robust e-mail, shared calendaring, document collaboration and instant messaging. The added benefit to service providers, company officials claim, is they can offer their smaller customers with more proactive monitoring of their businesses along with provisioning automation and more centralized management. This makes it possible for providers to consolidate existing e-mail systems onto a single platform reducing the cost of deployment. "We hear from a lot of small and medium-sized organizations about their need for enterprise-class messaging and collaboration services, but they do not want the worry of keeping their systems safe against things like SPAM, viruses and other security attacks. At the same time they want to purchase such services from providers that offer personalized support and higher levels of availability. That, too, is very important to them," said Pascal Martin, general manager for Hosting Solutions at Microsoft.

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a
miniature model of the model (and so on)
12/23/2003 11:30 PM
Mark Bourne says: So my wife Elizabeth and I are googling up possibilities for our long trip to England next year. Checking out London sites and so on. An acquaintance suggested staying for a few days in the Cotswolds, a scenic Middle Earthy region west of London. That's how we found a page about the town of Bourton.

You just gotta love this text, which blends Ye Olde Scepter'd Isle with sci-fi gee-wizardry:

You will probably have noticed that when you take a branch from certain trees (some conifers for example), the branch looks like a miniature version of the tree, and when you break a piece off the branch, that looks like a tree too. Mathematicians call this property self-similarity.

Bourton has a wonderful example of self-similarity: it contains a 1/10 scale model of itself. Because the 1/10 scale model is a complete model of the town, it must contain a model of itself, and it does, a 1/100th. scale model of Bourton, and because the 1/100th. scale model is also a complete model of Bourton, it must also contain a 1/1000th. scale model of the scale model of the scale model of Bourton.

And it does. It is only a matter of time before a team of nano-technicians turn up in the town to etch a sub-micron scale model of Bourton on a silicon wafer, complete with mill, waterwheel, and a highly imaginative interpretation of the River Windrush as a stream of electrons.

Hosted Services and Identity Networks

Hosted Services and Identity Networks 01/07/2004 02:32 PM

An interesting area that could benefit from identity federation technology is the world of hosted applications.  Increasingly, companies are relying on outsourced applications to support their business, including in areas such as CRM, HR, Supply-Chain management, etc.  Corporations want to ensure that when their employees access these remote applications, that they are simply using their local security credentials (e.g. their Windows or LDAP Network login) rather than having to create and self-manage dozens or more remote Web applications.  Right now, enterprises are exposed to a significant risk of identity theft and fraud -- for example, if an employee leaves a company (or is asked to leave, as is more common these days), the company has no way to de-provision or revoke the credentials from all of the external hosted applications that the employee uses from their Work computer.

This is just one of many drivers and forms of identity networks made possible by protocols such as Liberty, SAML and WS-Federation.

PingID has put together a nice summary of the various Topologies of Identity Federation.
