Multimedia broadcast technology selected

Multimedia broadcast technology selected 06/22/2005 02:56 AM

Digital Fountain, a vendor of telecommunications infrastructure technology, announced Tuesday that 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) selected Digital Fountain's DF Raptor technology as the single standard for the broadcasting of multimedia streams and files to cell phones.

3GPP is a consortium of numerous international telecommunications standards bodies.

The consortium is currently wrapping up Release 6 of its 3G standards, which will for the first time include a protocol for MBMS (multimedia broadcast multicast service).

Up until now, wireless operators were forced to deliver multimedia over unicast protocols, which is both inefficient and more expensive, according to Charlie Oppenheimer, CEO at Digital Fountain.

"If you have to deliver multimedia content on a unicast basis you may use 10 times the bandwidth but you can't charge 10 times the price," Oppenheimer said.

DF Raptor is a multicast protocol that also overcomes a singular challenge with broadcast technology -- there is no back channel for two-way communications that can be used to send error messages. Digital Fountain tackles the problem by using what the industry calls "erasure correction," which transmits a number of repair packets with every file or stream. The repair packets are specially encoded with an unusual property that is something akin to stem cells in that they can be used mathematically to recreate with precision any information lost in transmission.

"You become indifferent to which packets you receive as long as you receive enough of them," Oppenheimer said. "So the return channel isn't needed."

The technology offers major benefits to users, operators, and manufacturers.

For users, the technology can configure applications to withstand any amount of loss from a bad transmission. It also gives operators the ability to send extra packets with the least amount of bandwidth. For hardware manufacturers, it will allow them to lower the cost of equipment because it is "computationally efficient," Oppenheimer said.

There is also industry talk that the satellite radio networks Sirius and XM Satellite Radio are looking to use this technology to deliver both audio and video streams over their services in the future.

Although Digital Fountain will be paid a licensing fee by users, Oppenheimer

said its technology was selected over all the other public domain applications whose technology could have been selected without a licensing fee.

Release 6 of 3GPP's standard that will include MBMS is expected sometime in 2006.

Book Arts on the Web: An Introduction to Selected Resources by Cynthia L. Gregory
    http://snipurl.com/5k6g

In today’s Internet-driven world, handmade books might seem like things of the past. For book arts enthusiasts, however, the fine art of the book, in all its evolving forms from scroll to sculptural artist’s book, is alive and kicking. In fact, within the last decade, interest in workshops, programs, and societies dedicated to promoting book arts has increased worldwide. Not surprising then is book arts’ ever-growing presence on the Web. In the digital age, the once solitary book artist can now connect to a worldwide online community of artists and ideas.

So what exactly is book arts? Ask this to any group of artists or bookmakers and it is likely no two answers will be the same. In the art world, there has been ongoing discussion about what defines a book.1 For purposes of this Webliography, book arts is “an all-encompassing term used to describe bookbinding, paper making, paper marbling, calligraphy, letterpress printing,” as well as artists’ books, altered books, and mail art.2 The resources collected in this guide highlight a selection of book arts resources available online. Pipeline's Hall of Fame
    06/17/2005 07:17 PM

Just found out via a FeedDemon watch that FeedDemon is listed alongside Gmail, MovableType, Mac OS X, ICQ and Dreamweaver in TechWeb Pipeline's Software Hall of Fame. Here's a snippet from the article:

"When I first tried downloading RSS feeds, I found the process to be something that sounded like a good idea, but was a lot more trouble than it was worth. However, all that changed when I started using FeedDemon. This is a great tool for organizing, reading, and filing data from lots of Web sites. If you don't use FeedDemon, you're wasting heaps of time...On other news aggregators, things just seem to take more mouse-movements and clicks than they do with FeedDemon."

If you have a favorite application that didn't make the list, you can submit it to TechWeb's Call-'Em-Like-You-See-'Em Contest for a chance to win some nice prizes (including a 30GB iPod photo).

Finding Company Information: Selected Titles and Tips by Pamela Morgan Chicago Public Library
    http://snipurl.com/82a2

Public Libraries Briefcase No. 9, 3rd Quarter 2004 A publication of the BRASS Business Reference in Public Libraries Committee. Public librarians often receive requests for company information: sales leads, prospective employers, providers of a service, makers of tangible products. For the generalist, it is important to gather some basic information about the company during the reference interview. What does the company do? Is it a public or private company? Where is the company located? What else can you tell me about the company? Finding out as much as possible will allow you to match the patron information need with the appropriate resources. This will be added to Business Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.
