just as green as a fuel cell would be.

Well, we're getting
closer. CIT has invented a button-sized propane burning fuel cell that
can power MP3 players and "flying robots." While I suspect medicinal
Mary Jane had something to do with that last possible implementation,
the concept is staggering. It's obviously going to take a few more
years for this to hit the market -- what with the propane and all --
but eventually they'll get it so you don't singe your eyebrows while
charging your batteries.

When MTI Micro
Fuel Cells decided to show off their 'Mobion' fuel cells, they threw
one on the back of a Tapwave Zodiac, which as Tapland's Scott
Raulinaitis points out, makes it extremely clear exactly how big these
cells will be. I wouldn't mind the size, actually, if MTI could tell
us exactly what sort of power time we could expect out of
fill-your-own fuel cells. "2 to 10 times longer" is just a little too
vague for me. Still, methanol-powered gadgets? Maybe I could start
distilling my own at home.

real fuel cell system to notebook PCs in the near future.
Sanyo has already developed a hybrid battery system with both standard
lithium ion battery and fuel cell which can be used on existing
ThinkPad models. Said system uses a 130cc cartridge, leading to about
8 hours of battery life. The best part, though, is hot-swapping fuel
cell cartridges for uninterrupted mobile computing. The worst part? It
weighs 2.2kg (nearly 5 pounds).

The LANcaster
The LANcaster
03/14/2003 01:38 AMAnother entry into the field of personal video recorders, this one
from TerraTec. This one differs a bit from TiVo and ReplayTV, though,
in that instead of being just one box, it's actually modular. The
LANcaster has three separate parts - a TV tuner, a storage module, and
an interface module - which can be joined together over Ethernet
connections. The advantage here is that you can easily add extra
storage space, something that's a pain to do (and warranty-voiding)
with a TiVo or a ReplayTV, and put interface modules in different
parts of the house to be used with other televisions.
