Whatever Happened to AI?
Whatever Happened to AI?
04/22/2004 09:26 PMFred Reed of the Washington Times has written a short article
on the state of AI, or rather, the state of there still not being any
AI
to speak of. Like flying cars, AI has been often predicted as being
just
around the corner but it has yet to materialize. Nothing really new
here
but it's good to be reminded once in a while that there's still plenty
of work to do before our robots start thinking for themselves.
What Really Happened
What Really Happened
03/19/2003 10:27 PMPost the 9/11 wake-up call, the western intelligence community, jolted
into hyper-action and scared shitless, actually did some work for a
change instead of snooping on their own governments and analysing
semen stains on intern dresses, and discovered a whole bunch of scary
terrorist shit they never knew existed. They said in their reports,
"Fuck me side-ways! There's no way diplomacy is going to sort this
baby out, that UN's as much fucking use as a wet Wednesday
coffee-morning what with all its nicey-nice diplomacy and democracy.
We're bleedin' done for!"
They then embarked upon the only
course of action open to them, to set about decommissioning terrorist
network supporting states like Iraq before their whacked out nuclear
programmes started punching out dirty suitcase bombs that would fall
into the wrong hands, namely the backchannel of terrorist networks
that they just found out spans the entire world and blatantly
disregards beaurocratic coffee shop conventions like the UN.
"But we can't tell the public just how fucked-up things are, they'll
go mental!" the CIA thought to themselves, "We'll have to keep schtum
despite the fact that this may make it look like we're making it all
up when we say that Iraq is a major terrorist network router. Fuck it,
we have to do it or we'll have a nuclear 9/11 before you can say Osama
bin-lately. Or worse still, one of Saddam's goons'll leave a Samsonite
case in Jerusalem that would have your geiger counter clickin' like
there's no tomorrow, then the whole friggin middle east will go
nuclear over the space of about...2 days knowing those crazy Israeli
fuckers. What'll that do to the price of oil? never mind the factor
3000 suntan lotion you'll need to pack when holidaying in the Med for
the next 50 years, fuck you very much."
"No, we have to
act decisively. Darn it, get that chimp Bush on the line, tell him
we've got some work for him to do and to try not to fuck it up this
time. There's no way Saddam's going to call us a bunch of democracy
bound pussies, sure our people have freedom of speech, sure they don't
all agree with us but we're sure as hell not going to stand by and
have him call us names, have him play with our democratic values,
justifying his own dictatorial values as actually being effective.
Wait a minute, he certainly gets things done when he makes a decision
and he always wins elections by 99% majorities. Perhaps we need a
dictator? Yeah, fuck democracy, it just holds us back and makes us
look like a bunch of inept schoolyard name-callers who couldn't
organise a piss-up in a brewery. We need to act regardless of what our
people think. They'll come round, they always do. Besides, all that
ammo we got stock-piled is approaching its sell by date, we may as
well use the stuff."
And so, it began.

Un-happened
12/02/2003 12:42 AMCharles Miller, in Google, Microsoft and Tall Poppies.:
Bill Gates' original goal in forming Microsoft was famously to
have (emphasis mine) "A computer on every desk and in every home,
running Microsoft software".
You'll not find the last three words of that sentence in any official
Microsoft history (or at least I couldn't, and I searched hard).
They've been carefully un-happened: the dream of a nascent monopolist
truncated into a facade of altruism.
Google:
Fascinating.

09/20/2004 12:17 PMI remember dreaming that something was lost. I woke in the middle of
the night, not knowing what or why I was seeking so desperately.
Something was missing, and I could not say what.
Then I found it on the floor, where it had apparently fallen off the
bed during the night.
I lifted it and put it back next to my pillow where it belongs, and
fell back to a dreamless sleep. With a smile on my face.
I wonder... How long can one shirt keep her scent?

Whatever Happened to Gopher?
04/28/2004 05:53 AMWhatever Happened to Gopher?http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,62988,00.html Answer: the Gopher protocol developed in the 1990s at the
University of Minnesota may have been eclipsed by the World Wide Web,
but it's alive and kicking (even if somewhat underground).
Floodgap.com shows that more than 250 active gopher servers are
currently online (almost half of affiliated with American colleges and
universities) and can be found on every continent but Africa and
Antarctica. Gopher-enthusiast John Goerzen believes that gopher is an
excellent alternative to PDA and smartphone Web browsers, and says:
"Consider this example: Port-a-Goph, a gopher client in development
for Palm OS. Cameron Kaiser wrote this in his spare time and got it
working quickly on his own Palm," he said. "Contrast that with the
state of Web browsing on handheld devices: Despite many years to
improve them, I still regularly run across Web sites that simply do
not render at all, or render so poorly that they are unusable."
My LinkSeries Internet Guides were written in 1992 - 1994 that
list all the gopher sites for academic research and were used in
academic libraries around the world in search of scholarly information
from the Internet. These have been replaced and updated with my latest
2004
Internet
MiniGuides.

Several BoingBoing readers wrote in to say something like this, from

BugMeNot, but thought you might find this interesting. I've used the
site in the past from work with no trouble, but as of today, it is
blocked (our company uses WebSense filtering). I get a message saying
that the site is blocked by the "Racism and Hate" category... figure

sites fall into what categories and suggest changes, but, ironically
enough, you have to register to use those areas. No thanks."

Transmeta to Shut Down?
Transmeta to Shut Down?
06/05/2005 11:46 PMTransmeta
sells microprocessor unit: Apparently Transmeta — well known
as the landing place of Linus Torvalds
— is going to shut down. They just sold the Crusoe line of
processors to a Hong Kong company.
The deal marks the latest twist in the Transmeta melodrama. The
Sunnyvale, California-based company, which counted Linus Torvalds as
an early employee, hoped to challenge Intel in notebooks with
processors that consumed far less power. Despite signing deals with
brand-name manufacturers such as Sony and Fujitsu in 2000, tepid
performance reviews and product delays followed in 2001.
Deals dried up, three CEOs came and went, and financial losses
increased. Since 1998, the company has posted accumulated losses of
$635 million on revenues of $134 million.
Transmeta's early successes, however, did have a lasting effect:
They prompted Intel to come up with the Centrino processor, chipset
and network-interface bundle.
I remember when this company launched amid total secrecy. They
wouldn't tell anyone what they were doing or working on. When they
hired Linus, everyone went atwitter about what they were up to. Sad
to see it end this way.
