Sony Discovers How The Internet Makes
Region-Specific Strategies Useless
06/05/2005 11:57 PMYou would think, by this point, people would realize that country or
region specific sales tactics don't really work so well. The internet
has made it so it's nearly impossible to keep something offered in one
country from showing up in another. Of course, Sony apparently didn't
get the memo. In releasing the popular PSP in country-specific
launches, they're now left dealing with the fact that
devices are being sold into countries where the gaming device
hasn't be launched. Amusingly, Sony's claim against companies
selling the devices in the UK is based on the idea that the grey
marketers are violating trademarks. They would have a stronger claim
if they actually had the trademark on "PSP" in the UK -- but they
don't.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,

08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.

I'll openly admit that I'm frequently baffled by non-geeks. How
could anyone not want a USB Devil

makes some people more inclined to technical pursuits than others. Is
it something you've born with, or something that you pick up from your

Lego technic and a C64 from an early age, but would I still have been
drawn towards geeky endeavours if I'd spent my childhood kicking a
football around instead? It's nice to know that Google's Larry Page
was influenced by lego as well.

02/01/2005 08:42 PMGreed and digital convergence often go hand in hand.
Many a deal has been f*cked up by some greedy (usually white male)
as**hole who thinks he can't just stick to his business model and
evolve into digital convergence - organically (read: later.)
No this guy - needs to try and take it all - NOW. He's gonna make
his play, and dam the logic of the alliances, the virtue of doing it
right and smart - we want IT ALL - NOW.
That seems to be what Mike Ramsey at
TiVO did.
Instead of going into a deal with COMCAST, which was critical -
given the fact that PVRs are becoming a commodity and Microsoft and
Digeo are on their asses. TiVO turned down a deal with COMCAST
supposedly in favor of their "digital convergence/Home LAN" play.
This is why they bought Strangeberry.
But what seems strange to me is why couldn't TiVO have lciensed it
software to COMCAST and STILL do their Home LAN play?
Why can't they organically grow into a Home LAN play, evolving
their brand into something that means - cool, compelling experience
that works?
By turning down the COMCAST deal, Mike Ramsey got kicked out and
now they'll probably never ship the Strangeberry V3 - and they'll just
tube - as COMCAST will hook up with MS and squash them.
Oh well.
Here's Peter Rojas'
engadget report....
Ok, now we understand why TiVo CEO
Michael Ramsay was “promoted” out of his job last week. You
know how people have been telling TiVo how the only way they’re
going to survive would be to convince some a cable company to license
their digital video recorder software for use on set-top boxes?
Yeah, well according to the New York Times last summer they were
about to score a big deal with Comcast to do precisely this, that is
until Ramsay pulled the plug at the last moment because he was
convinced TiVo wasn’t getting paid enough money or given enough
control over the service.
We won’t second guess his decision, since we don’t know the
exact terms of the deal (though apparently they were pretty bad), but
you know what, TiVo is sort of in a life-or-death situation right now
and might have to take what it can get if it wants to stick around.
The company is still not turning a profit, they’re facing increased
competition from all sides (from cable companies with their generic
DVR-capable set top boxes, Digeo’s
Moxi, and Microsoft’s Media Center OS, not to mention stuff like
MythTV and Beyond TV), and having deal like this in place would have
been especially valuable in the wake of their recent break up with
DirecTV. Now it’s Microsoft and Digeo who are testing their
software with Comcast and TiVo that’s being left out in the cold.
Ramsay says his strategy was to make an end-run around the cable
companies and focus on turning the TiVo into a digital entertainment
hub (i.e. “convergence”, i.e. the same thing everyone else claims
to be working on), but now he’s out (at least as CEO, he’s staying
on as chairman) and it’s unlikely that whoever succeeds him will
have the luxury of grand visions: right now they’re going to have to
focus on ensuring that TiVo is still in business a year from now.
[engadget]
This is important stuff. TiVO defined PVRs and now they're about
to lose the market. Same thing is happening to NetFlix as we
speak.
Is it lack of patents and bank account that causes this to happen
or it something more about execution and staying smart. It's not good
enough to be first and be really smart about your product offering or
compelling experience.
It's about staying smart and working with others. Not being too
greedy and keeping your eye on the end-user's experience - not your
bank account. Or shall I say your future bank account.
Yah gotta follow DROC (do not run-out-of cash.) But you also can't
be too greedy. TiVO knew that COMCAST knew that DirecTV was blowing
off TiVO. TiVo should have known that MS was sucking up to COMCAST -
HARD.
Why was COMCAST trying to do a deal with TiVO? Cause TiVO has the
best product and experience. But they weren't able to come to a deal.
Hmmmmmm.
Sounds like Apple to me.

Universal's CD Price Drop Doesn't Get
Very Far
06/14/2004 09:21 PMLast fall, Universal Music made a stunning announcement. For the
first time
ever in the history of CDs, they were going to drop
the price of their CDs. It got a lot of attention, and many assumed
that other music labels would quickly follow suit - admitting that the
traditional CD business was not competitive with online music (both
legal and illegal). Instead, the price drop has turned into a
classic marketing
blunder that should be useful for business school case studies for
years to come. First, the price cuts pissed off their retail channel,
who felt they were being forced into it. After some initial
arguments, Universal finally agreed
not to
put the lower recommend prices on the CDs themselves, leaving it
up to the retailers. At the same time, Universal cut out many
promotional programs for the retailers, opening a door for other
labels to improve their promotional programs while keeping CD prices
higher. Many retailers, in turn, bought the new CDs at the cheaper
wholesale prices, but kept charging the higher retail prices to boost
their own margin. Since no other record label followed, the
competition on pricing never showed up. Of course, this is all short
term thinking by the retailers, who are simply driving more customers
to online music alternatives. Especially since those very same
retailers have now
pulled
the plug on a plan to build a giant online music store, they're
setting themselves up to continue down the trail to irrelevance.

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Price Drop;

09/01/2004 08:04 AM
GamesIndustry.Biz is reporting that Nintendo will drop
the price of their Game Boy Advance SP to $80 in anticipation of the
November launch of the upcoming Nintendo DS. (I wonder if that will
include the remaining Special NES Edition models. Hrm.) Even more
interesting is US retailer chatter that the DS may launch for $150
instead of $175, as Nintendo has previously stated. Unfortunately,
while the SP price drop looks fairly certain, the DS drop might just
be wishful thinking.
No word on European price cuts yet, but if the US gets a drop you
can expect prices to (eventually) follow elsewhere.

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great
display, awful DRM
07/02/2004 01:11 PM
Yuri Kageyama writes a glowing
review of Sony's new ebook reader, which uses a new kind of display
technology that rivals paper.I agree with Kageyama's assessment about
the display technology. I played with a Librie when I was in Tokyo
last month. The screen is remarkable. The display uses little balls
that are painted black and white, containing the same pigments found
in laser printer toner cartridges for black, and in sunblock and paint
for white. Once you turn on the display and a page of text or graphics
appear, it doesn't need refreshing. The only time the batteries get
used is when you load a new page. (The
technology was
developed by a U.S. company, E-Ink.) I did notice that sometimes you
could see the ghost of the previous page, especially on model I tried
that had a comic book loaded on it. I wonder if that's a general
problem, or if the one I played with was a dud?
I didn't Kageyama wasn't harsh enough about the hideous
proprietary locked format the Librie uses for books. He wrote, "I'm
not wild about buying books that self-destruct after 60 days." This
self-destruct feature is sickening. Who would buy a Librie with this
deadly defect built in? (Sony is making a similar mistake with its
music players.) I hope somebody with a sensible DRM policy starts
using these great display screens. Link

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

The Drop
05/21/2004 06:58 PMWell, first I was enjoying myself a lot, and then I went to see
Troy.
Here's my review of the movie:
Bollocks.
Lemme put it this way: The only thing I found slightly interesting was
Sean Bean as Odysseus, who delivers a very nice performance. If he
hadn't been there, I would've walked out of the theatre. Seriously.
Ever since Deep Impact have I never wanted to leave the theatre, but
this was really, really close. I had to amuse myself during the movie
trying to calculate how many modern soldiers would've turned the
battle, or what would a Battlemech look like when standing next to the
walls of Troy at dawn.
Even the soundtrack - consisting mostly of a woman wailing - was
boring. The only interesting thing was the play on the theme from Stargate
during Achilles' death. Nice touch.
I really, really, really would not like to see this movie ever again.
Hell, if the highlight of the movie is the sight of Brad Pitt without
clothes - then something is deeply wrong. And yes, I'm straight.
Straight, but in-fucking-credibly bored.
