AT&T Wireless Offers 3G in Dallas and
San Diego
09/01/2004 09:52 AM
AT&T Wireless said it is offering its 3G network in Dallas and San Diego: San Diego should be a particularly interesting market as it will be the first in the country to have competing 3G services--Verizon Wireless already has its EV-DO network live there. It will also be interesting to watch if the two networks seem to have any affect on Wi-Fi usage. On a side note, AT&T Wireless cleverly uses the term "metropolitan hotspot" to describe the service in the two markets. That term is usually used to describe the stringing together of Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a large region or by WiMax-like technologies that aim to blanket a city. It's really a stretch to compare the AT&T Wireless service to Wi-Fi. AT&T Wireless says its network offers 220 kbps to 320 kbps, with bursts up to 384 kbps, while even 802.11b, depending on how many people are sharing a network, usually can deliver multiple megabits of throughput....

Living replica of set for TV show

Living replica of set for TV show
"Dallas" -- in Romania
07/12/2004 02:11 PM
Blogger and journalist Emmanuelle Richard just got back from Romania, where she photoblogged these incredible snapshots< /a> of what must be the Nth great wonder of the world -- a gigantic, sprawling replica of the set of the TV show "Dallas." Even Larry Hagman said it's a perfect match of the real thing, according to Emmanuelle:
The florid theme park is not as glorious as it used to be! "Southforkscu" as locals call it was opened in 1996 in Slobozia, South-Est of Bucharest, by the King of Romanian cheddar, Ilie Alexandru: he's one these egomaniac and corrupt nouveau-riche entrepreneurs typical of post-Communist Eastern European countries. It's like a cross between an amusement park and a luxury resort. Originally, visitors could tour the ranch, ride horses, swim in the swimming pools, visit a small zoo, enjoy the lake and climb the 50 meters Eiffel Tower. And of course, spend a night in the Dallas ranch. Larry Hagman even visited! But Alexandru went to jail for fraud. A string of investors have failed to revive the place. One of them, a Russian dude even painted the ranch in ORANGE! The zoo is closed, the horses are gone... The Romanian hotel chain now in charge wants to remodel it, open a night-club. We interviewed the manager - pure Commie style, just unbelievable. I don't have much faith in this guy's management!

This artist Sean Snyder produced an exhibit about the esthetics of the place "Script For Dallas Southfork In Hermes Land, Slobozia, Romania (2001)" It went to Paris and Berlin (Link). This page contains details about the place and a pic of the ranch before the paint job. It's quite surreal, especially when you see the Eiffel Tower from the road, behind rows of cornfields.

Dallas, and San Francisco
04/13/2005 02:02 AM
Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has accelerated significantly over the past six months. Mindful of the high number of well-documented and sometimes very public failed transactions, organizations are looking to improve their chances for success. Given that mishandling of people issues is often cited as the reason for failure, many companies are demanding that those individuals involved in the M&A deals be better trained to plan and execute due diligence and integration efforts. In response to this demand, Mercer Human Resource Consulting will offer its highly regarded two-day M&A Ready intensive training program in Chicago (May 3-4); New York (May 12-13); Dallas (May 17-18); and San Francisco (June 7-8). The Secrets of Caterpillar Locomotion

The Secrets of Caterpillar Locomotion 05/13/2004 11:09 AM
Eurekalert is carrying a Tufts University press release today describing new research into the locomotion of soft-bodied insects like caterpillars. By studying the nervous system and biomechanics of caterpillars the scientists hope to learn how to build flexible (rather than jointed) robots. Caterpiller robots could have applications such as crawling through human blood vessels and organs. As part of the project, the Trimmer Lab researchers are subjecting caterpillars to MRI scans, biomaterial testing, 3D kinematics studies, electromyography, and hydraulic measurements. They hope to have a complete, physics-based computer simulation of the locomotion by next year.

Legless Locomotion for Legged Robots

Legless Locomotion for Legged Robots 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
The CMU Robotics Institute has posted a new research paper (PDF format) that proposes an unusual locomotion method for legged robots. Ravi Balasubramanian, Matt Mason and other researcher are attempting to solve the problem of a high-centered robot that has become stuck in rough terrain without any contact between the robot's legs and the ground. Their solution? The robot can use its legs as reaction masses to produce "attitude oscillations that result in incremental translation". They've tested the new locomotion method using RHex as well as their own two-legged "Rocking and Rolling Robot".

Yahoo has some interesting photos from the Exhibition MicroMachine 2003. This 14th International Tradeshow for Micro/MEMS & Nano Technologies in Japan is currently running from November 12th - 14th (this week). The photos show small one inch by one inch robots that use piezo elements for micro locomotion. The little robots also have tiny tools that they can use such as a micro hammer, micro grater, dust capturing probe, etc. Electromagnets on the tiny robot's feet let them lock down to metal surfaces. The robots were created by University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo Japan. I wish I could go to the tradeshow and see all the cool little robots! Of course, seeing these cute little robots makes me want to go get some piezo elements, an 8pin 12C509 pic and some watch batteries and make one too.

John Allsopp: Message To The Messengers - Props to the old school:

Of late, with the latest version of Style Master released, bedded down, and well received, I've been a little nostalgic about the old days of CSS. So I thought I might try to ride that wave a little, cast my mind back over my experience of CSS, and talk a little about some people you really should be grateful to if you work with CSS and web standards. Particularly some you might not have heard of.

There follows a tribute to some of the unsung heroes of the early history of CSS. And if that's piqued your interest, Lauren Wood's recent post about DOM Level 3 becoming a W3C Recommendation has some insights in to the early days of the DOM Working Group, which she chaired up until November 2001.

PHP History

PHP History 05/27/2004 03:13 PM

PHP programming language: Some interesting history on PHP. It used to be a Perl wrapper?

PHP was originally designed as a wrapper around Perl by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 to display his resume information and collect some data, such as how many hits it was generating. Others first used "Personal Home Page Tools" in 1995, which Lerdorf had combined with his own Form Interpreter to create PHP/FI.

Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, two Israeli developers of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology rewrote the parser in 1997, forming the basis of PHP 3. They also changed the name to its current recursive form. After months in beta, the development team officially released PHP/FI 2 in November 1997.

History of the Present 03/06/2004 02:06 AM
That’s the title of an excellent 1999 book I’m now reading, by Timothy Garton Ash. It is real-time reportage focusing around the great transition from pre- to post-Cold War that happened so unimaginably fast, starting in 1989, before our watching eyes. But the History of the Present is what bloggers are writing, too; and Ash says some things that anyone who’s doing it should consider very carefully...

IMDb History

IMDb History 07/17/2004 02:59 PM

Internet Movie Database - Wikipedia: An interesting few paragraphs on the history of the IMDb.

The database started out in 1990 as a collection of shell scripts created by Col Needham which could be used to search the FAQs posted to the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies.

In 1993, a centralized e-mail interface for querying the database was created, and in 1994 this interface was extended to allow the submission of information as well. The database then moved to a Web-based interface, which initially ran on a network of mirrors with donated bandwidth. In 1996, the project was incorporated in the United Kingdom to form Internet Movie Database Ltd., and banner ads were added to the web site.

In April 1998, the company was bought by Amazon.com, the current owner; however, a number of the original creators, including Needham, remained as site managers.

How many great things in the world started as shell scripts somewhere? It's a hacker's world.

The History Of Computing, Or Some Of It

The History Of Computing, Or Some Of It 07/14/2004 03:00 PM

We found a gem poking around on the corporate network the other day: a PDF of "The History of Programming Languages", a poster by O'Reilly that shows 50 programming languages and their timelines and interrelationships. Chris posted back in March about the progenitor of this chart, Éric Lévénez's Computer Languages History, which is kept very up to date (it already has yesterday's PHP 5.0 release).

A few interesting tidbits from the chart:

  • Ruby and Oak (Java's predecessor) are among the biggest mutts in programming history, the former taking ideas from 5 languages, the latter from 6.

  • Noone has ever heavily borrowed ideas from COBOL since the sixties (and even then, only PL/I did).

  • BASIC emerged from Fortran and Algol160 (whatever that is).

Equally interesting are the graphs that show the giant UNIX history hairball, as well as the slightly more organized history of Windows.

If I can find a big enough wall, I'm going to send that history of UNIX diagram to the roll-fed plotter we use for UML hairballs.

The history of bacon 03/17/2005 02:53 AM

Science.Ars rocks on for another week. This edition looks at some medical problems in the developing world. For a long time, it was commonly assumed that cancer rates were lower in poorer countries than in the developed world. A new study shows that as life expectancy increases in developing nations, so do cancer rates.

Where you live and what you eat have a large influence on the types of cancer you are at risk from. Richer countries have more breast, colon, rectum and prostate cancer, whereas poorer countries have a greater incidence of cancers of the liver, stomach, and esophagus.

There's also news on the history of bacon and a loss of meltwater. Read on.

It's a tear-jerker for those of us who lived through this era, seeing old friends like the Compaq luggable (mine had more wonky than usual floppy drives) and catching a glimpse of a few I'd not known about.

It also inspired me to keep on with my current tinkering project goal (which let me tell you, is way beyond my limited abilities): getting an Epson HX-20 laptop online via serial cable -> IR -> cellphone.
