I've always been a big fan of technology businesses that actually use humans to fill in the gaps where technology fails. However, as someone who runs a company that fits under that umbrella, the big question everyone asks is "how well does it scale?" I'm sure that's the same question that the folks that the folks running Any Questions Answered - a new service in the UK that lets anyone using a mobile phone send in a text message question - which will be quickly (one hopes) answered by a human at the other end (for a pound each). Of course, the trick to scaling is to have technology help those humans do what they do more efficiently. Thus, AQA's answerers apparently have some software (Google?) that helps them quickly answer standard questions. The company also is looking to employ random people at home to help answer the questions - which raises the inevitable (second) question of quality. Of course, in many ways this is similar to Google Answers - with the big difference being that you only pay if you get the correct answer with Google. Though, it's also not done via a mobile phone and not nearly as quick.

The Real Difference Between Humans and

The Real Difference Between Humans and
Other Animals

chelsea1
A couple of years ago Chelsea, our dog, accidentally got into a fight with a woodchuck (she was exploring a large hole beside the walking trail in the conservation are near our home, and the sharp-clawed woodchuck didn't like the invasion of her den and emerged and attacked). Chelsea was unsure what to make of this creature, and she first approached and barked, and then, when it squealed and lunged, she backed off and the woodchuck retreated. Chelsea seemed fine, and was a bit distraught but made no sound of distress, so we continued on our walk.

The next day we noticed Chelsea was licking herself on one side and I went to check to see if she'd picked up some burrs. To my astonishment I found a gash four inches (10cm) long and nearly one inch (2.5cm) deep. It was invisible under her fur but was still bleeding -- a battle wound. If we hadn't been paying attention we would never have known. If it had been on a different part of her body she might have died. The wound required several stitches and a long time to fully heal. We resolved to keep a closer eye on her health from then on.

A month ago, we were going out for groceries and, as usual, Chelsea came along for the car ride. With her arthritis and her hypothyroid condition she's a little tentative now about jumping into the back seat of the van, but she made it all right. We were doing up our seatbelts when suddenly Chelsea let out a terrible howl, just like a wolf's. We panicked and rushed back to see what was wrong, convinced she must have injured herself somehow. It was a cold day and my wife had strapped on her coat, and in walking through between the middle bucket seats to the back bench seat Chelsea had got caught and couldn't squeeze forward or back. She was completely unhurt, but was terrified and shaken by this experience of being trapped. A serious wound she took in stride without a whimper, but the thought of being immobilized, imprisoned was unbearable.

How different she is from humans! From childhood we howl for help -- from parents and then when we're older from doctors -- at the first sign of pain. We measure out our childhood with band-aids. But we learn to take imprisonment stoically, silently, dutifully. Soon we even learn to lock ourselves in -- in our rooms with 'keep out' signs on the door, in seatbelts in locked cars, and in homes locked against outsiders, and some even in gated, wired 'communities' -- voluntary prisons. Our imprisonment grows from being forced to stand in the corner, to being forced to sit in oppressive classrooms, to victimization by the cliques and bullies in the schoolyard, to 'being grounded', to the humiliation of having to pay and volunteer for even more stifling 'education' in universities, to groveling for jobs, employment contracts and wage slavery, to the 'bonds' of matrimony, to addiction to consumption and debt, just another form of imprisonment, and finally to fear on a global scale -- of criminals at every turn, of terrorists and tyrants -- causing us to want to lock up our loved ones and put barbed wire around our whole country.

This then, it seems to me, is the real difference between humans and other animals: We can take imprisonment but not pain, and all the rest of life on our planet can accept pain but finds imprisonment unbearable. Perhaps then it's not surprising that we call imprisonment without pain 'humane'. If you've ever watched chickens in battery cages, you know nature doesn't see it that way.

evdo_car.jpgThis is why EVDO cellular internet is cool: the guys from EVDOInfo.com rigged together a little application using off the shelf parts to display on a web page their car, its exact location and velocity, as well as the current view out their window. It's tricks like these that will make EVDO (and UMTS, if Cingular ever gets it deployed) a standard feature for "carputers" before long.

And to think, just a few short years ago these technologies were reserved for child molesters and enemies of the state.

Near Real-Time Content Deployment 06/11/2004 10:14 PM

I just got finished watching Ronald Reagan's funeral. It was very, very touching. I was intrigued by all the pagentry of it — this is the first presidential funeral in 31 years, and the formality and choreography of the thing is just amazing.

Anyway, at the end, Nancy was sitting near the casket and she got up to say her final goodbye. She broke down in tears over the casket, and all her children came to comfort her. The noise of the camera shutters was just defeaning by this point — they were going off like machine guns.

Immediately after Nancy and the Reagan children left the podium, I shut off the TV and came down here to my office to check my email. I get to my mail through Mozilla, and CNN.com is my home page.

I was amazed to see the picture on the lead story was the exact same image of Nancy and the children that I saw on live TV not 90 seconds before. The mechanics of content deployment that fast on that big of a stage must have been something to behold.

Getting a real-time look at open source

Getting a real-time look at open source 01/22/2004 02:11 AM

Recently I've been working on a project that might be of interest to other Advogato users: CIA, a system for tracking commit messages (and eventually other things) from any open source project. When new code is committed, the news instantly shows up on a web site, an RSS feed, and an IRC channel.

Unlike other similar projects that focus on bringing one project's commits to only its developers, CIA lets anyone see what development is happening right now, regardless of where or what for.

Ask Jeeves Being Purchased 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Cnet is reporting that Ask Jeeves is being purchased by Interactive Corp. Ask Jeeves runs ask.com, excite.com, and iwon.com along with it’s own search engine website. Interactive Corp owns Expedia.com, ticketmaster.com, match.com, and citysearch. Interactive Corp is run by Barry Diller. Cnet says ..

Ask Jeeves differs from other search engines in that it responds to plain English questions such as "What is March Madness?" rather than simple keyword searches. That was one of the elements of the company that made it most appealing as an acquisition target, Diller said.

"We believe that in the future (Ask Jeeves) has the potential to become one of the great brands on the Internet and beyond," Diller said in a statement. "And by beyond we mean in wireless, (and) in the search for anything on any device."

The search company, known for the butler figure that serves as its emblem, will operate as an independent business unit with operations headquartered in Oakland, Calif., following completion of the acquisition. If the deal passes regulatory scrutiny and gains approval of Ask Jeeves' shareholders, IAC said it expects to close the transaction late in the second quarter or early in the third quarter.
