Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel 05/20/2004 11:37 AM
The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made babies. What if Jesus survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article, "Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm burned out on the whole Holy Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel. Link

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

Microsoft security spend greater than
the Star Wars missile system
05/27/2004 03:41 PM
Microsoft has spent more on securing its software than was spent on the Star Wars missile project, the company's head of security has told conference guests. An unfortunate analogy for Iain Mulholland to use since the project was a complete failure and little more than the private obsession of a few top American ego-maniacs. But, despite - and because of - this Herculean effort, viruses and worms are going to get worse. They will become more complex, more vicious and more dangerous because the days of quick and easy exploits have come to an end, thanks to the software giant's efforts. According to one expert anyway.

Just stop the bus and lemme off. If you care about small (and not so small) CMSes, you owe it to yourself to take a hard look at Drupal 4.2. Yeah, it's a bitch to install without command line access -- though there are ways -- but Drupal's getting so many conceptual things right that it can't be ignored. Drupal looks very rich and very extensible. Because it's open-source GNU/GPL licensed, I predict it'll pull ahead and stay ahead of all competing products. The UI's not all it...

Disconnecting The Holy Grail

Disconnecting The Holy Grail 06/30/2004 07:19 PM
Last week, we wrote about the fight for the "triple play" of voice, video and data to the home over a single wide pipe. At the time, I wondered whether or not the cable companies and telcos were a little too focused on the "to the home" part -- and ignoring how wireless might matter. Over at TheFeature, I've tried to explore this idea in further detail and look at how the move to a wireless world may take some of the thunder away from the triple play battle. The triple play is still important, but it may now need to be an anywhere, anytime to any device kind of triple play, rather than a fat pipe connected to your home.

Vienna's best holy water 12/27/2004 10:38 AM
Cory Doctorow: The awesome Viennese net weirdo artists at Monochrom have identified the best sources of holy water in Vienna and are offering them for sale at reasonable rates:
monochrom.at has, therefore, obtained samples of Holy Water from ten selected Viennese churches. These samples have been mixed in correct proportions, purified from pathogens through distillation and osmosis, and then bottled in handy portions. monochrom.at therefore feels confident that they are offering not only the best Holy Water of all Vienna (city average) but the most aseptic Holy Water in the entire world.

monchrom is offering 20 vials (signed, dated) for sale, each containing 0.125 liters of purified Holy Water (city average) for E 44.95 per vial.
