Google Blogger Comment Rant

Google Blogger Comment Rant 05/15/2004 09:38 PM

Just now I found out that users commenters to get a Google Blogger account before they can post comments to blogs hosted by Google Blogger.

This makes no sense.I wouldn't mind if they just required the commenter to register themselves and made creation of a blog optional.  Yes, one could just create one and ignore it but it's irritating to be forced into creating and abandoning something like a blog just so I can post comments.

The right way to grow membership is by increasing the quality of service for members (i.e. convenience), not by telling blog readers to either join or go away.  Maybe Evan or Jason can explain why.

Update:

It turns out that this was caused by a preference setting.  Now it makes sense although I sure hope this was not the default setting.  Evan and Jason, nevermind.

It's nice to see Evan getting in WYSIWYG editing in Blogger (it seems it's someone named Massless who did the work.) Let's hope that ALL Google products features such a thing.

Since I've recently switched to Moveable Type - I've gone backwards in my "ease-of-authoring" experience. Does ecto work on a PC? Are there other alternatives that can get me WYSIWYG editing?

And that includes the ability to simply copy text w/links and paste. This is really hassling me and slowing up mky blogging process.

HELP!

Latest Pointless Patent: Redirect Page
For WiFi Logins
01/27/2004 02:24 AM
Wouldn't it be nice if we could go just one week without hearing about yet another ridiculous patent? These days, that seems to be wishful thinking. The latest, dug up by the always excellent WiFi Networking News is the fact that someone has actually gone and patented the concept of using a redirect to force you to a login page when you connect to a WiFi network. How is this possibly patentable? It seems like an insanely obvious idea - and one that plenty of companies use because it's obvious - and not because they ripped off someone's "intellectual property". The point of the patent system is to encourage innovation. The point of this patent (like so many others we've been hearing about recently) is to hold companies hostage for doing something obvious.

How to hack Blogger

How to hack Blogger 06/29/2004 05:48 AM
Blogger has published an article on how to hack the service to add greater customization by tweaking its template vocabulary:
For instance, most of our default templates display archive links in a list. But really, the archive tags simply provide the names and URLs of all the archive files, and we can do whatever we want with them. Do you know how to make a pull-down menu in HTML? Think that might be a more efficient format for your three years of daily archives? Great! Move the archive tags out of the list and into a menu.

Snowballed Blogger

Snowballed Blogger 09/14/2004 02:32 PM

A while back, I noticed that a fresh 'best web development language' war broke out, this time between Java and PHP.  I tuned out when it got ugly but noted that the war got started when a Friendster engineer posted about the Friendster's switch from JSP to PHP along with some throwaway comments that many Java geeks interpreted as insults.

I didn't know that the engineer was Joyce Park (hey, a fellow Korean-American blogger) and that she got fired recently for blogging until I read the Red Herring article (aren't they supposed to be dead?).

The problem here is that most bloggers just don't know realize that they have a powerful tool in their hands that could cause serious damages whether intentional or not.  If Joyce said what she posted to engineers she met in person, all there would be a heated discussion.  But posting the same on her blog created a big wave of controversy among geeks with Friendster as the center piece.

Should companies just shrug when personal activities of their employees affect the company?  If Joyce has really been blogging for the past five years, I think Joyce should have known better.  As to Friendster, they are just guilty of massive stupidity.
