Play Games, Be Better Students?

Play Games, Be Better Students? 05/11/2004 04:53 AM

Instead of taking away joysticks, schools should promote video games that teach critical thinking, a panel of educators and game designers says. But will school administrators dare to take the advice? Daniel Terdiman reports from Los Angeles.

Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games?

Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games? 01/22/2004 03:08 AM
Lots of folks talking about Nintendo's latest efforts to stay ahead of the quickly approaching competition for handheld video game players. Since all those others are trying to take the basic success of the Nintendo Gameboy and build on that, Nintendo apparently decided to rethink the whole concept and go in a different direction. Therefore, they've decided to create a gaming device that includes dual screens. We had reported back in November the rumor that Nintendo was working on a secret new product that wasn't an update to the Gameboy or to the GameCube - and apparently this is it (and, it's not, as we had thought it might be, their "iQue" in-between device). Of course, if you're going to come out with a completely new, funky device, it certainly would help to offer a picture - which they didn't. The idea is interesting, but will require an entirely thought process in creating games. Nintendo says the dual screens can be use to show two different perspectives during the game, or perhaps one screen could show a map and the other could be the in-game perspective. It certainly opens up some possibilities, but in the gaming business, the question is always about what software titles you have, and making it trickier to develop software titles could slow that process down. From the sound of things though, I think Nintendo is kidding themselves if they think this device won't take away from Gameboy sales. How many portable gaming devices do you really need? Also, there's no word on whether or not this device will include any wireless capabilities, which seems to be what many competitors are banking on.

Perhaps it says something about the intellectual sophistication of ancient cultures that some of the most entertaining games in existence are thousands of years old: backgammon , Go, manc ala... The now-ubiquitous chess is a relative newcomer, dating back merely 1400 years. One wonders whether Boggle or Mono poly will withstand the test of time so well.

Updated Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC

Updated Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC 03/27/2005 11:37 PM
Microsoft has released an updated version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC. Microsoft has indicated that the new version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC (version 2.4) is a bug fix primarily intended for users of devices running Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003, Second Edition. Microsoft has indicated that this version will run on all supported Pocket PC devices, BUT they are only recommending that users of devices running Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003, Second Edition operating systems upgrade. You now have the ability to get more from your eBooks on your iPAQ. This version includes updates for known performance issues but in addition, it has some exciting new features: 1. PAN AND ZOOM capabilities for embedded graphics 2. SCREEN ROTATION capability between portrait and landscape modes for more natural, comfortable reading (Windows Mobile 2003, Second Edition devices only).

Conflict between TopStyle and Microsoft
Fingerprint Reader
02/05/2005 09:08 PM

I've recently had a few reports of TopStyle generating an "access violation" error when it closes, and it looks like the problem is due to some sort of conflict with the software for Microsoft's new Fingerprint Reader.

If you're using a fingerprint reader and are experiencing this problem, rest assured that the error message is harmless - you can simply click OK to dismiss it. However, I do understand that it's annoying since it apparently happens every time you close TopStyle, so it is something that needs to be resolved. I've ordered a fingerprint reader so I can reproduce and hopefully fix the problem.

Update: Conflict between TopStyle and
Microsoft Fingerprint Reader
03/14/2005 06:24 PM

Earlier this month I posted about a confl ict between Microsoft's Fingerprint reader and TopStyle which caused a harmless (but annoying) error message to appear every time TopStyle was closed.

Since my initial post, I've installed a Fingerprint Reader (cool toy, btw) and have been able to reproduce the problem. More importantly, I've located the line of code where the error occurs. Although I'm stumped as to why the Fingerprint Reader software is causing the problem, I do have a fix in place that appears to be working. I plan to keep running TopStyle with this fix for a few weeks to make sure it's reliable, and if all goes well I'll make it available to everyone who is experiencing the problem.

WHO SAID that Microsoft had the dominance in the operating system market? A couple of homebrew efforts appear to be treading new ground in the ever-shrinking sector of niche hardware hacking. First up, from the OS4 team, is the brand spanking new update for Amiga OS 4.0. Thought the Amiga was dead? Think again. The new release includes support for USB mass storage devices and a Kernel update, taking it to 51.20. You can find more details on the release at AmigaWorld.
