01/23/2004 12:09 AMEveryone in Davos is a CEO or some other fairly senior title. I've
found myself introducing myself at sessions as "a blogger" much/most
of the time. ;-) It still amazing me how few people know what blogging
is. Calling myself a "blogger" seems to be the fastest way for me to
get the "what is a blog" discussion going. ;-)

If you were going to invite 10 bloggers for dinner, whom would you invite?
John, of
J-Walk Blog decided to start this new parlor game for bloggers. I
tripped across it in the 1/31/05 post on
Reality Carnival. It's a pretty good way to find the bloggers
that the most fascinating bloggers find most fascinating. (Did that
make sense?) The best bloggers define their own personal Best of the
Web.

03/14/2005 04:23 PMA few days ago, I got a letter from a reader named Randy:
I am father to a 2 1/2 yr old girl with her second
cancer who is going for a bone marrow transplant in late March. I have
just started to think about fundraising when I was forwarded your
interview in Wired and it got me thinking that perhaps I could use the
same approach to raise money for Julia.
I have been keeping a blog since she was diagnosed the 2nd time
on 12/30/04. Although I am a web architect, I know next to nothing
about blogs and am spending all my time researching cancer. Thus, the
format, graphics, and look and feel have been completely neglected --
the main focus has been the content in order to -- keep a record for
family, journal for Julia for when she is older, help me philosophize
about life and put her illness into perspective, etc.
I was hoping you could give me some tips on getting started --
some questions that come to mind:
- Finding an ISP that allows you access to the servers (I am
currently hosted at Geocities and would have to upgrade just to get
PHP and MySQL).
- How to set up processing for micropayments? (We have a
fundraising idea around Julia's treatment and progress which would
require periodic debit from an account.)
- Tips for building traffic.
- Links to 1) sites that help a blogger, 2) sites to blogs you
would consider top-notch, anything else you feel is useful
I know I could find this stuff myself, but I was hoping that you
could jump me up the learning curve so that I could get Jules' site up
and running.
I emailed him some recommendations but I figured you folks would
have some good advice as well. Are there alternatives to PayPal for
donations? Tips and sites for beginning bloggers would be helpful as
well...Google was only moderately helpful and most links I found skew
towards business uses of blogs. Try and keep the duplicate information
to a minimum and when in doubt, be more verbose rather than less..."Bitpass is good for micropayments
because..." rather than "Try Bitpass". Alright, go.

The Educated Blogger
06/11/2004 05:19 AMThe Educated Blogger: Using Weblogs To Promote Literacy in the
Classroom by David Huffakerhttp://firstmo
nday.org/issues/issue9_6/huffaker/This paper explores
the role of weblogs or "blogs" in classroom settings. Blogs, which
resemble personal journals or diaries and provide an online venue
where self–expression and creativity is encouraged and online
communities are built, provide an excellent opportunity for educators
to advance literacy through storytelling and dialogue. This paper
explores the importance of literacy and storytelling in learning, and
then juxtaposes these concepts with the features of blogs. The paper
also reviews examples of blogs in practice.

07/21/2004 10:58 AM Jay Rosen reminds us of Norman Mailer's pre-New Journalistic coverage
of the 1960 Convention. "[T]here is another way of 'covering' a
political convention," Jay writes: "Send a writer and let the writer
find a language adequate to the event." A snip: Mailer on Los Angeles,
site of the 1960 Democratic convention: "one has the feeling it was
built by television sets giving orders to men." In the comments, Seth
Finkelstein writes about the Mailer: Much shorter version: "Let in a
bunch of freelance writers, maybe they'll write something
interesting". Hmm. Let me rephrase that: Let Norman Mailer in and...
