Griffin Microphone Cable for iMic
Griffin Microphone Cable for iMic

Griffin has
added an XLR-to-miniJack version to it's "GarageBand Cables" lineup.
I'm sort of torn on these products (the other one is an
1/8th-inch-to-miniJack cord designed for guitars), as they don't do
anything you couldn't do with just a regular audio cable and a
converter plug, but they are white, and that has to count for
something, right? I haven't seen anybody do any testing of their
cords, but if they are as high-quality as I'd expect them to be, $25
isn't out of spec for professional-grade audio cables. And actually,
the more I think about it, these compliment GarageBand pretty well;
most people that are going to use that program are just noodlers (I
include myself in there) and probably don't have a need for
multi-purpose cords.
Oh, and what's XLR? It's the three-pin connector that most
professional microphones use.

06/25/2004 04:08 AMKodo JDO 3.3.0 beta (Beta branch)
Kodo JDO 3.3.0 beta (Beta branch)
02/05/2005 09:35 PM

Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements
instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects
standard for transparent persistence. It is the most complete
implementation of the JDO specification for relational data stores,
and comes with tools for producing a schema from an object model,
producing class files from an existing schema, and a performance pack
(distributed caching and statement batching) that improves performance
by 15 - 30 times. It supports most relational databases, application
servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total coding effort by 20-40%.
Changes:
This beta introduced a number of JDO 2 features including preview
support for single field identity. This allows for the use of
application identity without writing object ID classes when using a
single primary key field. A lifecycle event listening framework was
added as a JDO 2 preview feature. A convenience method was added for
retrieving instances based on OID, primary key value, and stringified
OIDs. Apache Derby/Cloudscape support was added. Caches can now be
evicted on a schedule. JMX 1.2 is now supported.
OpenSHORE 2.0.0 Beta 1 (Beta branch)
OpenSHORE 2.0.0 Beta 1 (Beta branch)
03/29/2005 09:16 AM

SHORE (Semantic Hypertext Object Repository) is a
hypertext repository that stores data about
documents and data described by documents. Access
to this information is provided as hypertext. The
repository stores objects that appear in
documents, together with their relations in a
semantic net. Hypertext navigation follows these
relations in the semantic net. The SHORE server
works as an HTTP server, and the client is a
standard Web browser. The repository uses PROLOG
as its query language and the XSB system as its
query engine.
Changes:
This release integrates the latest XSB Prolog
version 2.7.1 (Kinryo) as the query engine. This
offers the user sophisticated deductive query
possibilities to find out all sorts of information
inside stored documents and about the relations
among them. OpenSHORE shows query results as
hypertext, which leads the user directly to found
documents, semantically marked text sections
(objects), and relation end points. The query
engine reads facts about documents on demand from
an interface to the object-oriented database of
OpenSHORE, so facts must not be copied for
queries.

Graphics3D 6.05 beta 2 (Beta branch)
Graphics3D 6.05 beta 2 (Beta branch)
02/05/2005 09:34 PM

Graphics3D is a free, Open Source C++ library for
game developers, researchers, and students. It is
a base of robust and high performance code common to most 3D
projects. It is not a standalone graphics or game engine--it is the
set of pieces you need to jumpstart your own engine or graphics
project. The library has two parts: G3D for pure math, and GLG3D for
interacting with hardware acceleration via OpenGL. You can use G3D
without GLG3D if you want to use another 3D API (like DirectX) or
don't like the OpenGL abstraction.
Changes:
This release has support for g++ through 3.4.x, 2D
and video rendering, 3DS loader, wxWidgets, a
Win32 installer, large performance increases for
networking, and workarounds for bugs in older
graphics card drivers. There are precompiled
binaries for OS X, Linux, MSVC 6, and MSVC 7.

.Pro problems
.Pro problems
04/08/2005 10:13 AM
As people have reported
widely, there has been a great deal of abuse of .Pro. .Pro was
supposed to be a top level domain dedicated to creating a credentialed
area for verified professionals and profession related domain names.
People have been registering obviously unrelated domains and going as
far as selling them on eBay. This clearly violates the spirit of the
agreement, but it is still unclear whether anyone is technically
violating the agreement. ICANN has been criticized for not policing
.PRO especially in light of ICANN approving new sponsored top level
domains. As Michael Palage pointed out in his comments during the
board meeting, ICANN staff is currently investigating the issues and
they will come back with the facts and the board will discuss any
appropriate actions.

Workaround for gcc problems.
12/19/2004 03:50 PM
The version of gcc included with XCode 1.5 is known to produce
incorrect output from c++ code under certain circumstances.
Fink now has a mechanism to warn users about this, and Fink will soon
refuse
to use the "broken" gcc to compile packages which are known to
have this problem.
If you have already upgraded XCode to version 1.5, there is a
workaround,
described here
and here .
If you have not yet upgraded, you should consider remaining with
XCode version 1.2 until the problem has been resolved.
PSP Pixel Problems
PSP Pixel Problems
03/28/2005 04:06 PMAs I mentioned here last week, the PSP debut has brought with it a
relatively large group of complaints about dead pixels on the
screens. They range from a single pixel to whole rows or columns of
dead pixels. Anandtech has posted a response from Sony about
the dead pixels. It’s a generic type response, but worth
reading..
The Sony
rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try
the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them.
"If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing
during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP]
warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited
warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is
"determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the
"repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or
refurbished product at SCEA's option."

Some land problems
Some land problems
04/01/2005 04:49 AMMy post last month about free land, Get yer free land!, has landed
(har har) me in a tricky spot. I now seem to be the fifth Googe
response for free land which is leading to strange emails from people.
Two excerpts:
I would like to request more information about the free land. I'd like
too know how I could get in on it also.
And today's missive, with (I hope) some typos:
would love to move from calif to on of the places that has free land .
But i have quistions like I have two foster bays I need to know what
that county would give to them to live on. The other thing is do they
have places to rent until you build. the other is could you place a
mudular or moble home on the land to live in while you get a job and
you feel me.
I updated the post. I don't know about the free land, I only link to
it. And I don't want to feel anyone.

How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause?
How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause?
04/26/2004 11:53 AMWhile most of this article covers standard ground about anti-spyware
legislations and software programs (though, oddly, it does not mention
the two most popular spyware programs: AdAware and Spybot Search &
Destroy), at the very beginning it notes two interesting tidbits on
the impact of spyware. Dell claims that 12% of their
calls now involve questions about spyware (meaning it's good that Dell
has changed their
"don't
talk about spyware" policy) while Microsoft claims that 50% of PC
crashes are actually due to spyware. While this might seem like a
convenient out for Microsoft (whose machines certainly crashed plenty
in the time before spyware), it does indicate just how troublesome
spyware is on many computers. The worst part isn't just the problems
it causes, but the fact that most users have no idea that it's even on
their machines at all.

I was having some problems with Mail.app
and it's ...
10/31/2003 07:24 PM
I was having some problems with Mail.app and it's handling
of cached IMAP folders. When I would delete all of the messages in a
folder, then when I tried to view new messages it would still display
old messages that I had deleted from the server. The issue seemed to
be that the folders were missing the "special" message that is in all
IMAP folders. I had been using mutt and procmail for quite some time
before I switched to IMAP, hence none of my folders had the special
message that helps keep IMAP clients on the straight and narrow. So
if you are seeing odd caching bugs, try deleting the folder and
re-creating it through the Mail.app interface, especially if they were
just procmail mbox files.
